When this happens to me, I put layers of masking tape right where the die isn't cutting. I start with one layer and add more layers as need. That way you are shimming just the portion that needs it!

I recently got the Tonic Studios Layering Circle dies and there are 14 circle dies in that set! The cut edge is right in the middle of the die so you can emboss if you want but you don't have too.
