Personally I've done both but the deciding factor...

Personally I've done both but the deciding factor for me was the font in which I was going to use. Sometimes one letter is prettier than the other. Or I'll mix sets using both first and last.

You could use them as holders for bookmark cards that are squared, cut the short side off the envelope when sealed and pull out card if that made sense.

I just adhered things in the corners with glue...

I just adhered things in the corners with glue dots or on the back I put my handmade stamp strategicly where I was gonna put adhesive so it blended together. The back I never really worried about....
