"With a Twist" by Therese Calvird was the next online course I attended from the Altenew Academy. A wonderful topic: How can I use the stamps, dies, materials and techniques in a different way than usual to discover even more possibilities.
Some ideas shown were:
- unusual color combinations
- layer sets: do not use all layer stamps, e.g. only stamp the outline, emboss a "layer", or use colored pencils or markers....
- shakercards with a "view"
- unusual card formats...
- different style combinations
- and so on...
The "twist" for my card began with the approach. Normally I have decided first for a technique and then thought about which stamp set fits to it. This time I knew that I wanted to use my new Altenew stamp set "Playful Plumeriaâ. I liked very much a card by Therese Calvird in blue shades with golden embossing. Thatâs how I wanted to start. I googled to see which color combinations the wonderful Frangipani flowers have and wanted to choose a color I didnât find, so I chose blue tones at first. In the meantime I know that these flowers can be found in almost all colors. I spent one evening playing with the set and combined different color combinations and embossing powders. In addition, I created a shaker card with a view into the inside of the card, which I had never tried before, and I am going to show you this card.
First I wiped two skylines on a square, white cardstock with the Altenew Stencil "City Scene", using Distress Oxide "Hickory Smoke" and blending brushes. Then I die-cut a square a little smaller than the card with a stitched die and a circle in the middle with another die.
In order to not damage the Big Shot, one should not die-cut through two cardstocks at the same time. Therefore I lay this cardstock on the front part of the card and "embedded" the circle die again into the hole and outlined the circle with a pencil (tip from Therese). Next I put the circle die exactly on the penciled circle, fixed it with Washi Tape and die-cut the front of the card.
After that I placed the "City Sceneâ stencil on the right of the inside of the card and wiped it with grey Distress Oxide, so that when the card is closed the outside and inside skylines match.
I wanted to stamp the two Frangipani flowers of this set in pink, orange and yellow. I tried many combinations, but I wasn't satisfied. The pink should only be subtle. Finally I came up with the idea to use the coordinating "mask set". First I stamped the inside of the flower with bright yellow and orange and then I put the mask on top of the flowers and gently wiped the large petals with blending brushes in subtle pink. I also made a few leaves in the same way and then die-cut the flowers and leaves.
I then began the final stage of creating my shaker card. On the die-cut square I attached a transparent, stable acetate on the back with a glue roller. Then I sealed everything with foam tape and another acetate so that the shaking elements of Nuvo (Pure Sheen Confettis) cannot fall out. I glued everything to the front of the card to fit the circle. You can now look into the card at the two skylines and the word "Smile". As a last step I arranged and attached the flowers and the leaves.
Have fun trying it out.
