When I think of kids cards, I think of bright colors and magical realms. So I turned to my Stampin' Up! (SU) "Magical Day" stamp set and it's matching "Magical Mates" die set. To add dimension, I cut two extra blank outlines for both figures and glued behind them as a "stack" to raise them up off the busy background.
I stamped the knight and dragon using black ink, then colored them both with Copic markers. Then to add some additional magic, I colored over the top of both with Wink of Stella glitter brushes (clear for the dragon and silver for the knight).
I felt that the background should be an enchanted forest, so chose the tree pattern paper from SU's "Myths & Magic" designer series paper (DSP). This was colorful, but I didn't want the knight and dragon to get lost "among the trees", so I die cut circles from colored vellum for each figure to rest upon.
The banner was stamped with a sentiment from SU "Itty Bitty Birthday" set in black ink. I trimmed the sentiment to 3/4" wide, then added castle-like banners at both ends using the SU banner punch. It felt kind of disjoint from the rest of the card, so I added a slim aqua strip behind it that would match the car mat I had chosen.
The main panel is double matted with colors to match both the dragon and the knight. I think it makes for a bright cheerful kid's birthday card.
I am rating the difficulty level as a "3" out of a possible "5" because of the need to hand color these small images. If you are an experienced colorist, it would be rated a "2".
