Why did my watercoloring spread so much outside the tape? Was it the tape I used or the watercolor paper or did I use too much water? I used clear repositionable tape and pressed it down firmly on the paper for a good seal. When I peeled the tape off, the watercoloring had spread past the tape edges on the paper AND the tape left a sticky residue on my watercolor paper. Ugh.
Instead of watercolors, I used 3 watered-down Distress Inks (blue, green, and pink) for my watercolor washes. I splattered the rectangles with ground espresso Distress Oxide Ink. Instead of doodling, I stamped 2 wildflower silhouettes along with the sentiment. TFL and for the advice!

Maybe it wasn't the right tape, the best tape is painter's masking tape, but I like the look of your blocks, love the wild flowers and the sequins embellish this perfectly!!

I ALWAYS have the same problem. I am pretty sure it is a combination of the tape and how much water you used, but I am the last one you should ask since I always have this problem. I am going to figure it out though because I love this technique.
Regardless of what happenened, your card looks very cool and well done! Isn't that great when that happens?

I have NO answers about technique here but think it may have been a happy accident? With your color and image choices I really like the wavy vs crisp lines. They really add interest!

I am guessing the problem was the type of tape. Painter's tape is designed to stay secure even when liquids are applied. I've had fairly good results with washi tape, too. The good thing is all your blocks bled equally so it looks intentional and has a wonderfully rustic yet balanced look. Love your addition of the gold & copper sequins.

Oh, your card looks great with the bleeding. Very pretty image you stamped, too. I always use Frog Tape which I love. But, this time for the challenge I used Washi tape because my Frog tape was wider than I wanted. It worked great, too. So happy you joined us this week.

I actually love the watercolor bleeding. Reminds me of the look you get using salt. I think your card turned out wonderfully. Love the color palette you chose. TFS....into my favs for inspiration.

Oh and I am thinking a low tack tape may be better, I have had masking tape pill watercolor paper ( depends on the paper, my black watercolor paper seems to be more fragile than the white cotton ones) I have used washi tape too but, I have not tried clear tape before. I am thinking if you do use it to daub it on your jeans a couple of times to remove some of the sticky ness from it so that it is not leaving adhesive behind when you lift it off the dried painting?

Perhaps the tape was old, that's normally why it will leave a sticky residue. I used washi tape for mine and had no problems. Anyhow, your card looks Fabulous despite the "problem" you had with it! Love the colors and sentiment placement~

Smiling here...what you think is a mistake looks quite artsy. I use the painters tape and when going around the tape use a light touch with the brush and water. It's like when you are painting walls and you have everything taped you do a light touch near the tape. Sometimes my problem is ripping the paper as the tape is pulled off. Good luck next time. Thank-you for sharing your questions, we all learn from you. Great to see you play the challenge. TFS
