Christmas is approaching and the topic of the Altenew online workshop, "Impressive Heat Embossing" by Svetlana Marchenko, fits perfectly: The course gives an overview of different heat embossing techniques: Starting with embossing combined with coloring, clear embossing, resist techniques, embossing with ombre effect and layered heat embossing and more.
The course has inspired me very much, because I have many embossing powders, but I always used them with the usual techniques and mostly only the colors white, gold, silver and clear. I immediately knew which two stamp sets from Altenew I wanted to use for the course project: "Brilliant Baubles" and "Sophisticated Wreath". As techniques I chose the embossing with ombre effect and the layered heat embossing, both of which are new territory for me.
Embossing with ombre effect means that the embossing powders are applied side by side to create a color gradient. With layered heat embossing (especially suitable for layering stamp sets), at least one up to all layers are created by embossing powders. These powders are applied step by step on top of each other and each layer is melted with the heat embossing tool before the next layer of embossing powder is added. For all techniques I used the Versamark ink pad and sometimes the Versamarker pen (e.g. for minor corrections) as an "sticky" ink pad.
There are so many different embossing powders. They melt with different textures, they have different degrees of fineness and sometimes they even have additional glitter elements, not to mention the many colors, a great variety of possibilities. In order to get a feeling for my embossing powders, I grabbed one of the Christmas balls from the "Brilliant Baubles" and tried out numerous embossing powders. This helped me a lot later when choosing the right colors.
With the âlayered heat embossingâ, I first stamped the background stamp of a Christmas ball with Versamark, spread embossing powder over it and melted it with the heat embossing tool. Then I stamped the next layer stamp with Versamark on the already melted embossing powder and repeated the same with another embossing powder. With some balls I even tried a third layer. In addition, I sometimes spread mini beads and glitter to melt into the embossing powder. But in these cases I kept the heat embossing tool underneath the paper so that I didn't blow the beads and glitter away.
For the ombre effect I pressed the Versamark ink pad directly onto white, smooth cardstock and applied different embossing powders next to each other with a small spoon and melted them with the heat embossing tool. Afterwards I die-cut different Christmas balls from this colorful piece and on some I added further layers or beads etc.
Several times I stamped the branch from the stamp set "Sophisticated Wreath" with VersaFine Clair ink pads in the colors Shady Lane, Verdant and Twilight on white cardstock, sometimes with a second impression to achieve a little depth effect. I die-cut the hanger on the Christmas balls out of golden Mirror Cardstock. After gluing the Christmas balls I sketched the threads and bows with a T-ruler and an Edding Fineliner. The sentiment is also from the stamp set "Brilliant Baubles" which I stamped with black Versafine.
It was a lot of fun to try out these new techniques. But it's not just the card and the workplace that glitters afterwards!
I hope that I have inspired you â that would make me very happy.
