As you may already know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This Saturday, 10/25/08, my daughter and I, as well as and a group of friends will be supporting Race for the Cure. I made this goodie box in honor of this event.
My mother is a 6 year cancer survivor. While we will participate in this event in celebration of my mom, we will also act in memory of my grandma who was also a victim of breast cancer. I believe that whether one has survived or not, to have the courage and strength to deal with such a illness, is a battle won and not lost. My grandma was a winner while fighting her cancer!
This box is a Chinese take-out box covered in cardstock. The centerpiece is actuallly a picture of my mother's backside which was taken at last years race. Her "survivor" t-shirt reads: I walk for those who have walked before me and for those who walk beside me." This pic is set on 2 pieces of cardstock and can be pulled off the box to be used as a magnet (magnetic strips are applied). I have to share that I love this picture so much because
as she stood at the Cancer Recognition ceremony I snapped this photo without her knowing. On the backside it reads "Hope is believing in a better tomorrow" (stamp). Small ribbons are tied on the side along with 2 the symbolic pink breast cancer ribbons (made using a CB die cut). The best part is that there is a sugar cookie w/ pink and white M&Ms inside. I plan to give this first box to a special friend. Other boxes will be sent to my mother to share.
While I think of my mother and remember my grandmother, there are many other women and families that cross my mind who have been afflicted by cancer, breast or otherwise. We can all pray for a cure and healing.
Thank you for looking.

The most moving tribute I've seen. Thank you. I appreciate your prayers too.

Virg, I was so touched that you gave me this box at work this morning! Your mom is such a beautiful lady, inside and out and it means so much to me to have her photo on my desk! I will be thinking of you tomorrow at the Komen Walk, and how inspirational you, your mom and grandma are! Love you sister!

This is a beautiful tribute to your grandmother and to your mother. This is a great Chinese take-out box and what a sweet, special person you gave it to.
