I'm sponging a project and I can't get my black SU ink to look black unless I take it directly from the ink refill bottle. It's looking more purple than black, and yes, I did reink my pad. Maybe I didn't reink it enough but how much is enough? Does anyone else have this problem? If I sponge from the reinker it takes a zillion years to dry!

everyone comments that the SU black ink pad has a purple tint. I use Stazon Black or Palette (sold by Papertrey Ink) Noir when I want a true black ink.
I quit using the SU ink black for awhile now because the effect I got from it. I thought it was just me...just got tired of refilling it..finally through it out. Now I use Versafine Onyx Black or a Stazon ink.

i completely agree with you all about the su black. I made a candle with the Brocade background and someone made a comment out it looking purple. I have been using the Stazon Black now.

I'll add my "me too" to this one. The SU black is horrible---unless of course you want that shade of purple. It is worse on the SU cardstock--I too thought I had grabbed the wrong pad. On other colors of cardstock it is not as bad but white---ewwww yuck!
I too thought that something was wrong! You would think that SU would fix this problem since it is something that bothers a lot of people! I use Staz On as it's the only other black I have!
It's strange how my SU black pad started out black and then turned purple. I don't use it anymore. I bought Adirondack ink in Pitch Black and it's true black.
SU! black marker is the same. I eventually used a sharpie for Santa's boots on a card I was working on. Also has anyone purchased the marker sets? I have the neutral set which was only 4 markers and the basic black looks like a dk grey...
I too have completely given up on SU black....I use memento tuxedo black, stazon black, palette hybrid noir and versafine black, depending on what I am coloring with....
Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I'll be replacing it shortly now. Do you think anyone's mentioned the problem to SU? Maybe they're oblivious if no one has said anything.

I love archivers black, Adrinodack pitch black, and love versafine.
I made a card where half the card had been covered with SU! black ink and then I stamped over the black with white flowers thinking they would be grey and instead they were lavendar. Pretty, but not what I wanted
I don't understand why SU doesn't fix this problem
I noticed that all of the alternative inks listed are not dye-based, but are pigment, solvent or hybrid inks. Even before the issues with Basic Black classic ink, I remember hearing something about black dyes really being a very, very, dark purple and that our eyes just perceive them as black until they get diluted and the purple tint is able to show.

This is one of the reasons I don't use SU basic black. It isn't a true black. It has a lot of purple in it. And even though it's supposed to be waterproof, I had times where it ran when I did a wet technique. I switched to Ranger's Archival Jet Black years ago (dye based). It's a true black, it's waterproof, smearproof, and fadeproof. And you can find it online or the big box craft stores.
You can revive the black in your SU Basic Black pad by removing the humidity from it. I have a dehumidifier. I put the dehumidifier in the closet with the open black pad on top of it. Give it 20-30 minutes and it will return to black. Then keep the pad in a ziplock bag. Hope this helps.
Just an FYI: If you took a coffee filter and marked it into 8 wedges. Make an approximately 1/8th inch black marker dot near (but not touching) the center of the wedges from different brands of permanent markers into each of the wedges, then dripped drops of alcohol onto the center of the wedges until the pigments ran, you would then see that black is actually made up of many different colors--sometimes even including a yellow if I remember correctly.
In my Chemistry class we did this experiment (called chromatography) on t-shirts afterwards and it makes a sort of tie-died effect. There are many uses for this in the scientific world.
Yeah, it's pretty sad when my 4yo dd won't use the SU black because it's purple. I really don't want to try the dehumidifier thing either. I live in a high humidity area, it would take YEARS if it ever would work.
You can really notice this when using clear stamps too...after stamping with SU Black and cleaning with a baby wipe, my stamps are now stained purple! :(
I just recently used SU black for practicing coloring and was shocked that it had turned purple! I've had that pad for years - it is the old style of SU pad (smaller). It's always been black up until this past weekend. Re-inking improved it.
I also believe they changed the "formula" for black, friend bought a new reinker and complained it was purple looking. I bought my reinker well over a year ago and it's black black. I think everyone who is experiencing this problem should write a nice email to SU and tell them how dissatisfied we are with the black ink. perhaps if they realise how big the problem is and how many are now buying from other manufacturers they could work on it?
Someone mentioned that all the inks listed were pigment inks, but not so. Memento, Adirondack, India Ink, Marvy are all dye inks. I have other issues with SU ink and don't use it, but my friend's SU black was definitely purplish.

Good idea! Is there a customer feedback area or an email address?
I found this at the bottom of SU's home page when i clicked contact us http://www.stampinup.com/us/enu/7.asp
looks like this email may be the place to send to?
