I have seen some videos where stampers mask with Inkadinkado (or similar) stamping mask paper. I don't mask too often, but when I do, post it notes have worked just fine. I would like to mask more though. In your opinion, do I really "need" a special masking paper?
Thanks!

I think it has to do with the material of the masking paper being durable so that the ink doesn't bleed through after multiple stampings. That way you can keep that mask with the stamp to use over and over. With a post it, it could bleed through. Oh and also the masking paper has adhesive all over as opposed to the one "line of stickiness" .
So, if the post it works fine for you, you probably don't need it. Save your Money for other goodies!
The difference is that the masking paper has the post-it sticky over all the paper. Sometimes that would be nice, I think. Sometimes, no matter how well I try to stamp my mask on the post-it and get as much sticky stuff as possible, I don't get as much as I would like. This would be sticky all over.
You can also buy Post-Its with adhesive that covers the entire back, called full adhesive, and Post-It tape, which comes in a few widths. I have the tape in a 2" width, which I like.
Amazon carries both, if you want to get an idea of the sizes and prices.
You can also buy those snail type adhesive runners, in a removable version. I have one of those, and if my Post It needs a bit extra sticky, or maybe some sticky on an opposing side, I just use that. I like the idea of Full Cover Post-Its, Bjeans!
Hmmm good idea, I have some Stampin Up two way glue that would probably work. Now I'm taking the masking paper out of my Amazon cart! Thanks!

Glad to help. I'm usually charged with enabling people to spend money, so saving it is a new direction for me, rofl.
I can say that if my stamped image has been bigger than a Post It, I've just stamped it onto copy paper then added some repo tape. Just make sure you get right up to the edge.
You can also do it with die cuts.
Haha! Yes, you saved me $6.00 this time but you cost me $48.00 yesterday with the Stamp Platform!!

I love this tape. It is perfect. I do heat set my stamping on it for just a few seconds before I cut it out so no smears.
I do both...I think it also depends on if you want to keep the mask. Postits only hold up so much. If it is a very detailed fussy cut or you are going to use it a lot-say for a big run of cards...you might want the heavier masking paper.
I got the full sticky postits on amazon. I like them a lot. Not just for covering an image but for doing edge masking...like I want to protect the whole side of a card. I can cut it in 1/2 or thirds to run the distance I want. Or triangles for corners, etc.
A little cheat...you can double down your postit by sticking layers together if you want a heavier weight mask before cutting it out. And depending on the size...if you reverse direction, you *may* be able to have sticky on two ends if that makes sense.
I think it depends on why you're masking.
If you are only stamping over the top then post-it notes will suffice. But I think if you want to ink over the top of an image to create a background then something that is completely sticky won't curl or peel up so should work better.
Here in the UK it's hard to get hold of all-over sticky post-it notes and post-it tape so masking paper would be a gd alternative.
For mortise masks that have straight lines, I use Scotch removable 3/4"tape. It is super thin, holds up if you are using several colors, can be placed all along the edge of the opening and made as wide as desired. The only draw back is that although it would hold up for a long time, I usually throw it away after each use as the tape is not absorbent and the ink remains on the surface and gets all over places where it is not wanted. I get it with coupons at Joann's, so it is pretty cheap.
Ugh! You're killing me! I've been watching Kelly Latevola videos and she almost had me convinced to put the masking tape back on my wish list and now this! Haha! Off to update my Amazon order...

LOL! What's that golden rule? Enable others as you have been enabled? ;)
I hope you love the tape. It's so handy, and I think it's stronger than regular Post-It's. I'll have to check that to make sure it's not the adhesive covering all of it that makes it seem stronger. No matter - it's neat stuff. Report back how you like it, okay?
I will report back. What really threw me over the edge was trying to mask an image on watercolor paper to do a background wash. The regular post-it note got all soggy and did not have durability to be washed over with water.

My experience with Eclipse tapes was the opposite. It never stayed put, not even for one use let alone multiple uses. I exchanged it and the "new" stuff wasn't any better. I've wondered about the Inkadinkado brand but given my experience with Eclipse... no thanks.
Give me all over 3M Post-Its any ol day!
You'll note I was brand specific. Another company came out with a similar product but again the sticky wasn't sticky enough and kept coming off before I could stamp my next image.

Interesting. I store my Eclipse mask with my stamps and use them over over. It's good that we have so many product options so we use our favorites. :p
I too like Eclipse for masking. One day I decided to use Alene's Tack It All over to stretch my masks for multiple applications using Eclipse. I've found it great especially with highly detailed masks. It makes the stickiness perfect and the masks more durable. I've tried using a little removable tape runner on the front side of the mask to help control the Eclipse paper curling during application of the Tack It All Over. I wish I could find another solution. Just now I'm thinking maybe applying it before cutting my masks may work, not sure. I'm still experimenting. I've one set of masks I've used countless times still going strong, but it is a pain to do!

What a neat idea! I hope you post updates so we can benefit from your work. Could yellow Frog Tape possibly work? It's less tacky than blue painters tape and excellent for gentle holding. It comes in different widths and is sold at big box stores like Home Depot.

Hey y'all, I want to share with you what I am doing for masks. For those of you that own an electronic cutter, like the Cameo, you can use the Contact shelf liner that is self-adhesive, scan your stamped image, made an "outline" of it in the software and cut it like vinyl with your cutter. The cool thing is that it does not bleed and can be wiped clean and used over and over again!!! When I finish with my mask and clean it, I just stick it to the back of my clear pocket that I keep my stamp set stored in and it is ready the next time I need it! Here are photos since a "picture is worth a thousand words"!!!

I hope this is useful for someone!!!
OMG this is brilliant, and would be so easy especially with a ScanNCut. Wonder if cling vinyl or the clear vinyl found in Joanns used for tables and such to protect would work?

I used the Post-It tape today on a card and it is thicker and stronger than regular Post-It paper. I only have it in a 2" width and am going to get it narrower, since sometimes I just want to mask off a border or a line.
When doing that I make it a little wider than the card so the card adheres temporarily to my craft mat or the scratch paper it's on.

Anne....I am not sure. It has to be able to temporarily stick to your image and be easy to remove without damaging it, which the contact liner is. If you have some on hand, give it a test try. I just love that I can use my masks and clean them and use them over and over again and when and if they wear out just cut a new one!!!
I got my Elicpse Tape and love it after trying it out. I cut a mask to cover my stamped image then blended a background with distress inks. I think this roll will go a long way. Thanks for the encouragement to spend spend spend!
