What type of work surface do you have in your craft room?
I'm currently redoing my craft room and was wondering what type of work surface you all had? I was looking at using countertop but it is too deep for the storage/shelving I was looking at! :( PLEASE HELP!

Craft room HA! I have a small table in the basement (near my washer and dryer so it's an actual excuse to go there). I have some different storage areas in the same room where I keep different things. I probably have more room than others, but how I dream of a craft room for my very own.
I use an old desk, that incidentally has a bullet hole in the drawer. Long story. Suffice it to say no one I know put the bullet hole in the drawer. It was there when I got it from the local plice service.

I use a countertop. Countertops come in different depths if you're interested in going that route. I got mine at the "scratch and dent" section of a local hardware store. Some with the supporting cabinets. Before that I had a folding table with a hardback picture book on it! :P

My mom got me a wooden drafting table when I was 8 for drawing on. It has been loaned out to numerous people coming back kinda shot but the work surface is still smooth. I have a foldup table in the room that I just keep all my art stuff on..kinda messy but at least I can see what I have. My son in law gave me some old white cupboards, lower part that I put boards on to hold stuff on top. It all works!
Oh, I forgot to add all this is in the spare bedroom that was moved to the dungeon....I mean the basement! I love it and can look outdoors and not feel like I am confined to that dark place. lol

lol! we are an inventive bunch! I'm in my kitchen...on my table that we got from my other half's mom, they used it from the 1950's onward. (Nope wouldn't trade it for anything.) I bought 2 storage drawer (rubbermaid type) with 3 drawers each they slide perfectly under the table and are within easy reach. It's not pretty BUT it works for me! Lighting is great during the daylight hours but at night I use a magnifier lamp, my old eyes are needing bi-focals! Oh, and who really NEEDS a kitchen table to EAT on anyways?! rofl!! :mrgreen:
I use an old Staples home office desk with a pull-out return. It does double-duty as a real home office desk, with hutch, computer, work surface, printer, and all!

my dh is working on my space and my surface is custom cut by dh-birch ply wood- which we stained and are adding coats and coats of clear varnish. We built it countertop height so I'll sit on a drafting stool or stand.

I'm in the basement as well, and it's a unfinished one at that.
I can't look outside when sitting, but when I stand up I can. Our Window's are Glass block with a little window to open for Fresh air or to view outside.
My cat Sarge loves to sit on top of my Stamping Tabel and look outside. When it is cool outside we have the window open for the cool air.
Otherwise it stay's shut . . . I don't care for the hot humid weather we have in Illinois.
I have an OLD laminate countertop that my dad bought and cut to size for his desk when I was 6. It sits on top of 2 old metal filing cabinets, so it's the perfect height to sit in a regular desk chair. It's an ugly, cheap version of those really nice Bedford modular desk systems at Pottery Barn. The desktop itself is nice and sturdy and solid (MDF) so I can stamp away with no problems like I do when stamping on my folding plastic table. It's long, too, over 5' so I have tons of space.

I forgot to say the table is a grey marblish formica top, did they HAVE formica in the 50's?? lol! Nancy, hey, but your basement is cool in the hot humid summer in IL , right?When I lived in ohio i'd do jigsaw puzzles in the basement it felt sooo nice!
I have a table that my hubby built for me for my B-day a couple of years ago, I can't remember what the material is called, but it's the same stuff that dry erase boards are made out of. Underneath it's plywood. And it's VERY sturdy. I could jump up and down on it if my head wouldn't hit the ceiling lol. It's a really nice smooth surface. My table is I think 8 feet long, and 4 feet deep, and he also put in some drawers. It's really nice having such a deep table, because that way you can have all sorts of shelves, and storage stuff right on top of the table.
I take up about 1/2 (ok maybe more than 1/2) of our guest room and work on an old desk. I have a friend who put counters and cabinets in her basement for her stamp room and I'm so jealous, it works really well!
I have a big L-shaped desk from Costco. It's pretty big and I like it although I would like to have counters instead but oh well. My stamp area is in the basement as well which I LOVE b/c it's so hot in th esummer but it's so nice and cool down there!
Since we were adding a room and remodeling the kitchen at the same time, my workspace is a 10ft long corian counter with built in cabinets below. My areas looks out a window to the garden or out the sliding door to the fountain. But it is also part of the family room, and the counter becomes a buffet when we entertain. I hide everything around the house when we do this!
I use the floor. Quite literally, the floor. I have a large wooden chess board that I turn over and use, but I actually stamp on a piece of fun foam from Wal-Mart. ;)

As long as I do not open the window's when it's hot and humid.
We have Fan's on in the basement. When we run the Air Cond. when it super Hott. It's much better in the basement.

This is so funny! I do something similar.
I use the dining room for my stamp area. I have my table pads on, and put a piece of that roll out plastic tablecloth from Party City on top of the pads. The I use the SU placemats. (That's what I call the grid paper.)
Anyway, my stuff is in storage containers around the dining room, and spilling into the living room. When people come over (which is rarely), all the stuff goes in the bedrooms, which is a pain in the neck. It's quicker to take it through the sliding doors onto the deck, so if it's a totally indoor party, I can do that provided it isn't going to rain.
What I wouldn't do for a stamping room!
My son is in college, so it should only be 3 or 4 more years until I can have his room (which is the tiniest in the house). I have my Mom's old kitchen table (it might be formica - white with gold flecks all over, and a metal strip around it). My DD used to use it as a craft table. Now it just takes up room in the family room. It will be the perfect stamping area!
I have an old office desk with 3 drawers on each side. The top is huge (6' x 3' and crammed full of stuff). I have a large (24" x 15" maybe) self-healing mat that I stamp on, covered with SU grid paper.
I work in the other half of my guest room. My terrific mother-in-law snagged me four rolling chairs and a table with a Formica-like surface. It's great, and so easy to clean!!
I have two banquet tables (4ft and 8 ft) from Sam's Club in an L shape that I covered with white contact paper because they were the brown wood grain and too dark to work on. I also have a piece of countertop with legs on one end while the other ends rests on top of the one table to make the L into an F. The nice thing about this is I can slide the countertop piece farther onto the table to open up the room if I need to. Clear as mud?

My DH just made me a huge L-shaped desk in our basement, it has a shelf 18 inches above the desktop. I have my grandma's old kitchen table in the middle of the room also, so I can make ALL kinds of messes!!! If any of you subscribe to Creating Keepsakes, there was an article this last month about a girls scraproom.......my desk looks almost like hers (her's is fancier than mine, but mine has more room;) ) I had a SU party Friday night to break it in, we had 10 girls here and had plenty of room. So if your in Ohio, look me up!!! LOL!! Shelly
I'm lucky enough to have a separate craft room! I live alone in a 2-bedroom condo so I made the spare room my work area. A friend of mine's husband burilt me an entire wall length desk/cabinet unit (I designed it). It's got a very large work surface covered in a formica laminate which I chose because it's very easy to clean and won't stain like wood. It's got all kinds of drawers and shelves. I LOVE it am in there almost every day! :-D
I use a counter top. When we re-designed my stamp room 5 years ago we special ordered a counter top - it's 12.5' long, 3' deep. On either end of the counter top; I have lateral file cabinets to store sets and accessories.

I use the kitchen table. We have a small house and that's the only place available to stamp. My dream is to have a craft room someday! A gal can dream, right!!!
I have a countertop that I purchased at IKEA...it is perfect for my room. It is 73 1/2 x 25 1/2 and 1 1/2 inches thick. I was able to use my file two drawer file cabinet unter one side and the legs you buy at IKEA for the other side. PERFECT height and I added a computer drawer that pulls out for my keyboard underneath and my flatscreeen sits on the corner of the table.
It has worked out very well...good depth.
I have to put it a little plug for the shelving units at IKEA also. I have a smaller room and I did not want really deep cabinets as they extended too far into the room. So I bought the "Billy" cabinets in a blk/gry specked pattern with frosted glass doors and all of my stamps/supplies are on the shelves BEHIND the doors..always a good thing. I have the table on one side and the cabinets run all the way around the remainder of the room. Certainly not nearly as nice as some of the custom cabinets but it worked perfect for me!
I have an old library table that my DH got when one near his work was closing to remodel and they were throwing out all their stuff. He scooped it up, and refinished it for me. It is huge and it is solid wood. I love it.
I have a Formica countertop cut to fit in my closet on top of 2 - two drawer file cabinets. But the part I love, it the glass cutting board (yes, a cutting board turned smooth side up) placed in the middle of my counter.
I love working on glass. It is so easy to keep clean and makes a perfect stamping surface. The size is 16 x 20 and I popped off the little rubber feet and fastened it to my counter with four glue lines (yes, like dots, just lines) It has been there for over a year and I have never had a problem.

I had the dining room slated as my hobby room when I bought this house years ago simply because I have a pretty good eat-in kitchen. I bought the brown folding tables to use. I know, it's not pretty but it is functional!
I haven't seen it for awhile, so much stuff strewn about, haha. I'm neat, but not in a clean way. Um, let's see, its a formica counter top, yea, that's it. It's actually a nice built in desk space with cabinet and shelves above, drawers below, just for me and my crafts. The other side of the room is computers, which, is great when I'm using it, but very distracting when dh or ds are playing games on them.

I am using one of the two spare bedrooms and share the one room with the guest bed. I have a table that was in my mom's building when she moved in. She gave it to a friend. That friend was getting rid of it so I took it back. It can be set at an angle or flat. I have it flat with stuff on the back edge. I have a little bathroom cabinet from IKEA that I put all my stamp pads and reinkers that I have in. I have a few buckets and other little things there. I have the rest of my stuff in wire crates. I'm not that happy with my current set up...but it's what I have until I get a job. Then...I am going to buy some sort of cabinets and countertop. I want it so I can be able to sit or stand and also be able to put stuff away. At that time, I am going to make additional shelves in my closet. I just need to rent a compressor and the nail gun or possibly borrow it next fall from Habitat for Humanity.
