Question What type of felt do I use for diecutting?

I thought I would try my hand at diecutting felt using my CB and snowflake dies and it works, but the diecut felt snowflake just all fell or pulled apart . I used "synthetic" felt (ie: not wool) - is there a particular type of felt that I should be using?

I've heard that wool felt is the best, but I've had no problems cutting what I've found at the local craft stores. You might try backing your felt with a plain piece of lightweight paper, which might give it some stability, and help it cut better. I have also seen where some people back their felt with Mod Podge, let it dry thoroughly, and then cut it. One of these might work for you - hope so!

I cut the stiff felt, sticky backed felt and the flimsy felt from the craft store with no problem.

You may have a problem if your trying to use the actual Cuttlebug thin dies. They are not large enough cutting edge dies to always make it through the felt. It can be done, but may not always be as nice as you would like.

My favorite felt to cut is made from 100% wool. Love that stuff! The cheap stuff you can find at Michaels cuts okay, but it just isn't the same.

Good luck!

Go to your local Joanne's fabric store, find the wool felt on the bolt. Get a yard or two with a coupon. It's actually a blend of wool and synthetic, but still really beautiful to work with. I cut it up into smaller pieces and dyed them myself into tons of different colors.
If you don't want to dye it yourself, there are tons of places online you can buy wool felt colors in small quantities.

or check Etsy, they have tons of assorted colors.

Appreciate your help with my little dilemma.

I did actually use Cuttlebug dies and they cut easily and cleanly, but will try and get some wool felt or wool blend and see what happens. And I'll try backing the felt too. I had originally wanted to use felt snowflakes on some of my Christmas cards, but ran out of time to fiddle since it wasn't working. I am in Australia, so no Joannes or Michaels stores here, but I'm sure I'll be able to source it here. Thanks for links to the other stores too

Hi there

Im in australia too, I find that my cuttlebug dies work better with felt purchased from lincraft/spotlight by the metre instead of the small craft squares.

Now's a great time to buy with the sales that are on, especially your standard commonly used colours

Cheers!

sometimes a die that has a lot of lil details will just shred the felt, it breaks the fibers too much. i have not tried wool felt by the yd before....it is a must try for this yr now LOL!

Tip for big Shots, Cuttlebugs, etc:

Felt die cuts much nicer, and will stay intact better, if you put the felt between 2 pieces of printer paper. Then make your sandwich as normal for your machine. You can use recyclable or scraps of printer paper if you don't want to waste new pieces.
