If you like simple I would go with one of the Canon Powershots. I've used a few of them and they are the easiest cameras to use. They also take wonderful pictures. I'm looking to upgrade my old HP camera to a Canon Powershot.

I'm still learning the nuances of it, however; bad shots have been the result of user error, not the camera.
My old Nikon CoolPix 3100, which I loved, but, certainly was obsolete, was a great camera--just limited.
I'm not sure what price range you wanted to stick within, but, the S700 is a pretty slick little digital camera within a reasonable price range (under $300) for the average user.
OMG, I am so glad this was posted. I would like to brag on my hubby this morning. I have been wanting a digital SLR forever. Well this morning I had a confirmation email from an Ebay seller. My WONDERFUL Hubby ordered me an awsome New package on ebay last night. I went with the Sony A200. It is comparable to the Cannon Rebel XTI and Nikon D40. I deceided on the Sony because of the image stabilization is built into the camera itself as opposed to being built in the lenses. Sorry to hijack I am just soooooooooo excited. I also have a Cannon powershot and love it it is a point and shoot. Happy Camera Shopping. Definately check ebay when you deceide to buy. I saved about $500 over what the package would have cost me buying seperately elsewhere. Oh He also ordered me a light tent set up. I can not wiat!

Steve's Digicams has in-depth reviews. A list of what they consider "the pick of the litter" in different categories is on this page. The Nikon D60 is one of them. You asked for simple, and their 7-page D60 review is hardly that. You can jump ahead to read the last paragraph of the conclusion.
When I bought a camera several years ago, I ignored two negatives their review had mentioned about how the control buttons work on my model, figuring those features weren't important to me. As it turns out, those two items have been real irritations.
That website can put you into overload really fast. But after you zero in on a specific model, their review might help you buy with more confidence. Be sure to report back on what you end up with and how you like it.

No wonder you can't wait.
The Sony A200 is another of what Steve's Digicams considers "the pick of the litter" in the digital SLR category. It sounds like you've got a whole professional setup coming. Lucky you!
i have a digital SLR, a Pentax K110D. It's a starter SLR if you're looking to spend around $600. i love it.. manual focus is my friend.. sharp foreground, out-of focus background.. i love it!

I have a Canon XTi. It's the basic of the digital SLR for Canon. I need to get a macro lens. It's the one that takes close up photos well to see the little details.
Depending on the type of person you are... but I wish my hubby got me a 40D instead of the XTi. The 40D has more features and as a geek girl, I have grown out of the XTi buttons/menu options.
Canon 40D. It's new. We had the rebel before but DH wanted to upgrade. I think any SLR is fine. A tripod and good lighting is a wise investment if you want clear quality photos.

I absolutely LOVE our Nikon D40...it is a great digital SLR for beginners and is so easy to use, IMHO. I also have a Canon Elph SD1000 and I'm a big fan of that too. But, I do most of my card picture taking with the dSLR though.
I am a bit of a camera fanatic. Here's what I have/use:
1. Nikon D70 - older model SLR that takes great photos. Best thing about it for me was that my flash and lenses from my old N65 (film SLR) worked with the camera body.
2. Fuji F20 - has the best capabilities for low-light settings for any compact digital that I've seen. It has been discontinued but you could still find one if you looked hard enough.
2. Nikon Coolpix 4300 - very old but it works! It's been relegated to the standby camera and I let the kids use it on special occasions.
I use the canon digital rebel and it is great. It always amazes me how much detail it picks up. ... sometimes too much detail. I always notice little spots that I didn't color in all the way after I take a picture and blow it up on my computer screen.
