I have been thinking a about getting the SU watercolor pencils but I wasn't sure what colors are in the set. Are they the same colors as the pads or just a close match? Which would be better, prismacolor wc pencils or su wc pencils? Or is there something even better out there? TIA
I have the SU pencils and some from Michaels. It does not tell you what the colors are, so you have to guess. I havent used them enough yet to decide if they are any better. I mostly wanted colors that would cordinate.
I have the Prismacolors (4 and love them too. They are softer than the Derwents which both a plus and a minus, you have to continually sharpen them when working in a small area. I know they are expensive at Michaels but I used the 40% off coupon (which you can also use on the Derwents) and very good deals can be had on ebay for them as I understand. Both brands have more colors than SU so that's a thought to keep in mind. The SU are pretty much the same colors as the ink pads. I know some one has made a list of the color matches between the different wc pencil brands and SU colors but I haven't a clue where it is.
Personally I do not care for the colors in the SU watercolor pencil set. In particular the greens are really odd and there aren't enough colors/shades in the set to be very versatile. I have used Derwent's for years and when I had to use a set of SU watercolor pencils at a demo I was horrified at the ugly colors. It really cramped my watercoloring to be limited to the shades that SU included in the set.
I agree that Derwent pencils are fabulous. If you don't feel like you can afford a boxed set, Michaels sells them by the single pencil and you could pick up colors as you need them and can fit them into the budget. Just a thought.
Some of my customers don't mind mixing the colors, but others really prefer the crayons because they don't have to blend. I suppose it's personal preference. I enjoy playing with the SU pencils to get different colors.

Hey girls, get your SU pencils out and play with this chart - I used it at the Stamp Therapists shoebox today (gray and purple to get Perfect Plum) and it seemed to help.

I to have them. Sometimes I use them. I do not liek the greens either. They look more blue than green.
Thank you galestamps for the chart. I will be using it. I am going to get the crayons next. I love them! Very easy and the colors match great,
I use Faber Castell Albrecht Durer! I started noticing that these were the pencils used by the authors of watercoloring books so I figured they'd be in the know!

I think SU pencils are made by Faber Castell - I will check the product guide and get back with that!

I know you are specifically looking at pencils. The watercolor crayons from SU do match the card stock if that's what you want. The application is very similar. I agree about the SU pencil colors but the crayons are great.

This is how I afford my collections of things like this. I buy one at a time and then eventually I have the set.
My vote is for Derwents as well (Hi Jovi!!). Other than those I've used the Prismacolors and didn't find them near as creamy, bright, or blendable as the Derwent pencils.
I agree with The MFT Lady.... The Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are artist grade pencils. Dick Blick has them on sale for a great price.
