Yes, it is like the Versa Mark pad, only a pen. I use it for when doing the emboss resist technique. After I color the image, I use the Versa Mark pen over the image, then my clear embossing powder will stick. After that I sponge in the background.
You could also use it to doodle on dark cardstock to create a watermark look, like some people do with Versa Mark pads and stamps. You could use it to emboss certain areas of an image to highlight parts.
Here is a card I made the other day. The koala bear and branch were colored first and embossed with clear embossing powder, using my Versa Mark pen to get the powder to stick. Then I sponged the background and stamped the grass and branches.
I use mine as an "fix it tool" if you heat emboss an large image and it misses an corner or something else after your done heat setting you can dab that marker in the "missed spot" and sprinkle more powder and re-heat..
That's a great idea about using it for touch-ups! I never thought of that. Occasionally I have an image that there's a spot that didn't emboss and I either go ahead and use it or toss it. Now I can fix it with my Versamark pen!
TFS!
I'm afraid I haven't respected my versamark pen like I should! Thanks for the great ideas already. I have the thing but never think to use it. I'll keep it my mind more now!
I use it for small areas that aren't stamped - for example, rudolph's nose on THIS CARD was done with a versamark pen and red glitter embossing powder.
I just got one of these and was wondering if anyone has tried to use it to emboss digital images and such?
That's one thing that's kept me from using many digital images - printer ink doesn't emboss well! But I could so use my Versamark pen! Thanks for the light bulb moment.

My favourite way to use the versamark pen is to highlight part of an image. I have attached a card that I coloured with either Tombows or pencils. I then coloured in the flower bud parts only with the Versamark pen (I chose to do all the flowers). I then added detail clear ep and heat set. It really brightens up that part of your image. It allows you to colour with something other than ink but still have the embossing effect. You do have to make sure you colour within the lines though or, just like the versamark pad, it will leave it's mark. I love this technique. The result would be a much more subtle version of Ranger's Glossy Accents.
I would do a test for any medium that you use with it to make sure it won't 'run' (i.e printing digi pictures) because with a versamark pad you would be stamping over something, not dragging through it whereas with the pen, you are actually 'colouring' the area, which in some cases, could cause smearing or lightening of the colour, etc. Hope that makes sense
Forgot to mention that you could also use it to do a border around a layer for example. I have seen some people use a black sharpie to create a faux extra layer. With the versamark pen, you could draw the same border, then add ep (any colour) and then heat set. You could also write or print something or do hand doodling and again add ep and heat (or you could leave as is for a watermark effect that isn't embossed). Basically, anywhere you would use the versamark pad, you could use the pen (with a lot more flexibiity).
you know, Ive had my versapen for years and all these tips above have given me a whoosh of inspo - thanks girls x

Help! I just bought a versamark pen because I've started dabbling with the embossing techniques. I love the versamark pad, but wanted something I could use on small sections of an image. But my versa pen isn't "goopy" enough...powders don't stick to it! It's brand new, so I don't think it has dried out.
Anyone else having this problem? What am I doing wrong?

I always use the (I think it's called the chisel tip end - the one that's longer and 'sloppier' if you will). I used it to correct the tiniest part of a letter that didn't quite stamp with my stamp. Poured ep on it and it embossed with no problem! If you write something or colour in the tiniest space on cs, then try ep and heat it, it should work no problem. If whatever powder you're using sticks to your regular versamark ink, it should work. If it isn't, I would take it back and try another pen. Maybe it was old stock and was dried out before you got it. I have had mine for at least a year and it's as goopy as ever! HTH

You can also use it instead of a colorless blender to outline a stamped image for a shadowed effect. <-- check out the link for Nichole Heady's sample.
Just wondering if you had a chance to return your pen and if you were more successful with it.
Thanks, yes, I did get a new one, and that had the same trouble at first. But I spent a few mins shaking the pen to get the ink into the tip, and it seems to have "gooped" it up now.
