Hi,
I saw a thread where a few people mentioned they stamped with just flat rubber. No cushion at all. They used Aileen's Tack it Over and Over to get the rubber to stick to an acrylic block.
I thought I might try this, as it would be nice to skip the EZ mount part! But I am finding it hard to believe you can get a good impression without any cushioning. Should I put anything under the paper to provide some 'spring' or 'give' when I stamp the image?

I just received my first order of Bella's and I applied the Tack it all Over on one and it works great. I was first stamping with a cushion under the stamp and I did not like it (it pressed the out line of the rubber) Then I did it with out any cushion and it worked great. I did this with only one stamp though. You may have to try each stamp and see how it does. Good luck
Hey Denise. Yes, it works fine. I use Ez Mount for most of my stamps, but sometimes I get a stamp that I decide I'm not going to want to keep so I don't want to put it on EZ Mount. So I just use Tombow double sided tape and stick it on my block and stamp it. No problem at all I get great images every time. I don't use a stamp pad under the paper or anything.
My thinking is the only reason they use cushion with wood mounted stamps is because the wood is sometimes slightly warped. I've never had just a piece of rubber be warped. It's nice and flat...no reason you shouldn't get a great image every time.
The larger the stamp the more chance you might want a cushioned pad underneath.... I've bought some Inque Boutique stamps that even came with a little mouse pad type cushion. Their stamps are, as their name suggests, rather unique: rubber with a tacky back and an imprinted index image on back.

I found a Darcie rubber stamping mat at Joann's for five bucks...it works terrific...perfect image everytime whether your stamp has a cushion or not. It's way bigger than a mouse pad too (which I'm loving since I used a mouse pad before I got this). Good Luck!
Teresa, you are exactly right. Foam is generally needed with wood mounts because wood has tiny imperfections preventing complete smoothiness (lol!) Acrylic mounts do not have this issue.
I've found over the years that it often just comes down to the stamp itself. If the etching on the rubber is really shallow, cushioning actually causes problems. On thickly etched rubber it isn't an issue.
I just keep a pad handy, like a pad of grid paper usually, and I can move it out of the way to stamp with just the hard tabletop under my paper when needed. I just always felt that purchasing additional cushioning for every um stamp I got was too expensive, so I adapted. I really think it's just a matter of what you get used to.
I use naked rubber a lot...no cushion, no pad, just my acrylic block, double sided tape and rubber on my desktop...I agree that the image will stamp well if well-etched.

Ok, I am going to have to think this over and maybe try a few naked rubber pieces. Seems like it might be trial and error. I don't hate the EZ mount, but I am lazy and would rather not use it if I can get away with it. Plus, I just cut off a balloon on a Bella stamp. Oooooh I am still soooo mad. And I would not have lopped it off if I had not put that stamp on EZ-mount. Now with those, I know you can use them naked. Why I put cushion on them, I have no idea.
I bought a hot knife and glass mat to cut stamps I want to mount on e-z mount but have not tried it yet. I have tried to cut with the kai sissors but am not good at all.

Being a newbie I really don't have much stamping advice to offer but I can say that when I stamp I'm really unorganized and just stamp away, mostly naked rubber or clear stamps. Usually I have no trouble but if an image doesn't come out as crisp as I like, I dig for my stamp cushion and that usually takes care of my problem. I got it really inexpensively at 7kidscollegefund and it works really, really well. I'm not sure if its the same as an extra thick piece of fun foam or not, but that's what it looks like. Its fairly dense so not as mushy as a mouse pad might be.

I dont use anything at all with my UM stamps. I just use double sided tape and slap it right on the block. I have never had a problem with the images not being clear.

I just bought 8 unused but old SU sets from my demo really cheap. So I have to make the mount/unmount decision. When you say you use double sided tape, is it permanent or removable?

Mary Ann, I used to use removeable because it makes it easier to remove from my block when it's time to replace it. Dirt, dust, oily fingerprints...after awhile these things cause the tape to lose it's stickiness, so you need to replace the tape.
There's actually a product called Poster Tape that comes on a roll dispenser just like normal scotch tape. The only difference is that it's double-sided AND has a liner that comes on it. You tear a piece of tape off and apply it to your stamp or block and then take the liner off. When you're done stamping, just press the liner back on the tape and it protects it from dust, etc. The tape lasts a lot longer that way.

Is Poster tape available at Mikes, Joanns, AC Moore or online?
