hello everyone,
i have been lurking for quite sometime now. i just love this site. you ladies are all so talented!!! i just got a tonic guillotine trimmer and it cuts crooked!!! i bought it after searching through here and everyone pretty much recommended it. i sue it on my kitchen counter when working, i am pulling the blade to the left like everyone has said. what else can i do??? i am making programs for a friends wedding and need straight cuts to mat. any help ould be appreciated.
You might want to contact Tonic customer service directly. I emailed them (a month or so ago) about a problem with my trimmer, and they responded very quickly.
This may be dumb on my part, but make sure you are holding the plastic paper guide down tightly. If you don't the paper will slide as it's cut. Maybe you are already doing this, but I thought I'd try to help. I love my Tonic cutters, I have a 12" and an 8.5".

I have this trimmer, too, and love it... now. At first I didn't but I had to discipline myself to do exactly that... hold down the plastic guide onto the paper and pull guillotine down and to the left at the same time.If it was a big sheet I have to be sure and hold down in both areas of the plastic guide where it curves out. That, and, I was really bad about not snugging up against the top guide so I would start out crooked anyway. Now I do it correctly without thinking. I even use my other cheap cutters better now. I hated them but it was more my fault than their's.
I hope the company is able to help you, as it really is a nice cutter.

I also bought a Tonic guillotine 12" cutter because of the rave reviews on this site. I, too, was getting crooked cuts. In fact this woke me up one night so that I went to the cutter and tried to figure out the problem. On my cutter, I discovered that the measuring device at the top didn't match the grid lines on the base. It was about 1/16" off so when I folded my cut cs the paper was 'off' just enough to be noticeable and irritating. I called the company the next day (608-836-447 and talked to C. Steven Ramsey, in customer service, to explain what I thought the problem could be. He had a new cutter sent to me. He also instructed me to return the original in the replacement cutter's box, put the enclosed mailing label on and send the original back. I got the replacement within 6 days. (Maybe you got my original???)
Another thing, when you cut, as you said, hold the plastic paper guides and slightly push the blade toward the base. When you hear the 'swoosh' sound, you will have a nice clean cut. I now am 'friends' with my Tonic cutter. Good luck!
I hold the plastic guide doo-hickey down each time. I have thought that the measuring device at the top was not lined up with the grids, but then I talked myself out of that notion. Hmmmmmm, off to check it again.
Thank you all for your responses. Sorry about the typo's in my original post but was on a lap top and the keys are small!!! LOL
I will check out the measurements and do what you all suggested. I am also going to contact the company. I will let you all know what they say.
I bought the 12" trimmer with the slide blade; I had a few problems and I wrote to Tonic and asked to trade for a guillitone and pay the difference. They sent me the guillitone for free! But woe is me, I didn't like it becasue I could not see under the plastic guide to make small precision cuts. I took the guide off so now I can see but I can only make short cuts because I have to hold the paper down. So, I went back to the small 12" trimmer that I modified. I did not like the handle on the paper guide as you can't lift the guide to the full position because it hits the desk top. I used my button shank remover and cut off the handle. The extension kept falling off so I put cut a small piece of cork and wedge it in so now the extensioin stays on. It's funny that I ended back where I started after playing Dr. Frankenstein (a piece of this and lop of a piece of that) but at least I have a paper cutter.
I have a large paper cutter that I like but I use the trimmer the most aand finding a trimmer has been the hardest thing in stamping. I've tried 5 brands and have yet to find all the things I want including cutting straight without having to hold it just so, crossing my eyes, and sticking out my tounge. I should make a graveyard for all my old trimmers (chuckle).
