I have the tin, but I have seen, I think it is EllenH, puts hers in mason jars according to color. It looks pretty and I bet it is helpful when doing shading since you have them right in front of you for comparison.

I have the tin and currently store them in that, but Im looking for a more convenient way to store them. Its annoying for me to keep moving the trays around until I find the color Im looking for
so I cant wait to see what others use for storage!
I store all my loose pencils and all my watercolor pencils in a Pampered Chef Tool Turnaround. (I also have my scissors, brishes, erasers, sharpeners, Mono, Stampin' Mist, Crystal Effects, glue stick and two-way glue in it.)
I asked the art store when they were stocking the pencils if I could have some of the boxes that the loose pencils were shipped in. I got several...enough to put the 12 pencils for each color family in their own box (they are boxes for 12 pencils), then I put the greys in their own boxes and all the rest in my box from the 72 pencil set. I only find this arrangement awkward when I want to work with all 150+ colors at once!
I used to just cover a tin can and decorate it, lol! Hey, it was cheap, and by using the pencils I saw at a glance what colors were IN the tin...
That is what I do...and I store them sharpened side UP! That way I can pick just what color I need in just a second rather than messing with the annoying trays...
I ordered the large set (I think 120) in a beautiful wooden box. I should have known that a box big enough for 120 pencils would be huge! I took them out and put them in two big mugs I picked up at Starbucks. They take up a heck of a lot less room than the box and I can just grab the color I need. Anybody have any idea what to do with a three-foot-long wooden box with velvety lining just the right size for pencils?

So very blessed and so very thankful.
God is good.
For those who don't have much room on your desktop/table top to keep extra mugs of pencils on top, why not see if you have some of the medium or larger size clear boxes around that some of your SU! sets came in. They store flat in a drawer or on a shelf, you can stack them, and because they are clear you can pick them up to see if the colors you want are on the bottom!
I keep mine (over 150 at last count :o ) in a basket on a shelf next to my stamping desk. The basket is a Longaberger 'teaspoon' -- approx. 5" square by 4" high. I keep them point-up, and use the plastic protector so I don't get color splortches on the inside of the basket. The flat bottom on this basket keeps it very stable even when it's fully loaded. There is room for a few more pencils, so I guess I'll have to be careful about buying too many more -- or find a bigger basket!
I use a Longaberger basket protector for the Spring basket that is divided on one side - I think the protector is for flatware and napkins; it's a hard, thick plastic. So there are three sections on one side and one larger section on the other side (**make any sense?**) and I made my own dividers for the larger side out of cardboard so there are now 6 sections. I have my pencils divided by color group (reds/pinks, blues, greens, yellow/orange, brown...etc) with the sharpened tips up so none of them get broken or dulled.
hth
I have mine in the box they came in, tucked away in a drawer.... and I rarely use them! I've been collecting mason jars, so I'll have to put them in there so I actually start to use them.

Really?? I was thinking of ordering Prismas this way, because of they came all organized in this wooden box? Has anyone else purchased these in the wooden box and also not like storing them in the box? LM :-)
I bought the 120 or 150 count in a tin. It drove me crazy moving the trays. So for now I have them in the same drawer as the color family. I'd rather have them out, so I might look into a vase or mason jar. I also had several colors that didn't "match" the color families left over, so I'd like to see them out also.
This is what I bought to store my Prismas in. http://www.dickblick.com/zz228/37/ I found it incredibly annoying to have them in the tin with the trays stacked on top of each other and this gismo is so convenient!! I can take my pencils anywhere, I can prop it up on one end so each layer fans out for easy use or I can flip through each layer as I need it since I have the organized by color. Plus I know they are safe and secure in there when not in use...no tips will get broken off and need sharpened. Also I can store the whole case away when I need more space or keep it up on my desk within arms width. I Highly recommend it!!
This is what I use: http://www.dickblick.com/zz229/96/ - I like having my pencils in order by color (also something my 5yo son has picked up, I noticed), and portable.
I stored mine in the big tin they came in until very recently, and found it to be a real pain! I made a cardboard divider for a plastic cylindrical container someone had given me. I store them sharpened end up, the blues/greens in one section, reds/yellows/oranges in another, pinks/purples in the third, and neutrals in the fourth section. I love having them right at hand, and it takes up much less space on my table.

My tin lid has fallen to the floor so many times, that it will not close tightly anymore, so I have been looking for a new home for my precious Prismas. ;) You all have helped me alot! Thanks!
Kristina is so right - I love my little jelly jars of color For travelling to classes I had to come up with a "better" method though and discovered these wonderful little pencil "caddies" made by Kokuyo. The side fold up and you can zip them together protecting your pencils and when you reach your destination you can then unzip, fold down the flaps and stand these on your table. You must be careful with them though because if they get tossed around you will break the tips and possibly the whole lead, but I REALLY like these for traveling with my pencils. HTH's others who need to tote their pencils around with them!
I just recently stopped using the big box it came in. I currently just have a rubberband around them and keep them in the top tray of my CIS stamp store tote. Not fancy, but it works!
There are some good ideas above, though. I might have to try something else out!
I keep mine in a plastic box with a snap-on lid (Tupperware or Rubbermaid or something). Very handy for traveling.

Wow, love this. I don't use my pencils as much as I should because I hate that tin. I will be getting this after the holiday is over, lol. Already went over my budget this month and it has only started.
Thanks for the info....just **had** to order one! Seems like the solution that I have been looking for. I hate the tin they come.;)

I got these clear cube dividers at Office Depot. They are Eldon and they were 3 for $9.99. I have my SU markers and my Prismacolor Pencils in one, by color family. One holds Tombow and Le Plumme, extra Prismacolors, Sharpies, the other has Sakura Glaze, Stredtler Triplus Fineliner, Pilot Razor Extra Fine Markers and my Gel pens.
They sit on top of the CD cases that hold all my Stamp Pads.
Have mine in a small bucket, rubber banded together by color family, same bucket contains my markers and any starlight gel pens, etc. Of course the bucket is on it's side because of the markers, but everything is together and ready to use.
Help...I don't know which one to buy. Any Pros and Cons between these? LM :-)
They're both very nice, but neither would work for me because they only hold 120 pencils. Consider how many pencils you think you'll end up with . . . every time I go to an artist supply store, I find colours and brands that I don't already have. If you're like me, before you know it, you could easily own 200 or more pencils.

It is a pencil holder with six cubbies - I have a color family (approximation) in 4 of them, the nuetrals/metalics in the 5th and the 6th for those with no match or that I have extra pencils for.
When I go to use them, I pull out the pencil or the color family I am looking for - it is very easy to use.

This is actually a problem I'm about to face...but since there are several of the colors I rarely use, I may put those in an acrylic holder just on my desk, and keep the "top 120" in the case.
I just ordered matching SU colors, now how do I store them? Anyone with great ideas? In otherwords, if you didn't buy in a set that came in a tin.
I store mine in the Pampered Chef Tool Turnabout. I use three or four of the sections and have my colors sorted by the color of the rainbow. ;) (Like the clothes in my closet.)

I use the cutlery basket I saved from my old dishwasher, not real pretty but it works great. It is has 9 dividers so I am able to separate most of my colors.
I have about 140 pencils in it and there is room for a lot more. Best of all I can move the whole thing to my desk and it only takes up 5x9 inches of space. Now if I could just make it look prettier.

I purchased them this way and LOVE it. I like having all of the colors on their side so I can see them. I store them on a bookshelf I have and my 2 xyrons are sitting on top of it, when I need them I just open the case on my desk.
I'm bumping this up to see if anyone can answer the above. Thanks! LM :-)
Ooooh.. I hadn't seen the leather case!! Too bad the black 120 case it out of stock. (For now.) I think that is the one I would buy. Hmmmm... but the other case seems kind of nice too with the ability to stand it up. But I like the zipper ability with the leather case. I wonder how well the pencils stay in the fabric case? It also looks like with the fabric case, the "extra" rows of pencils just lay on top of the other pencils. The leather case appears that you can flip through the pencils.
Hmmmmm..... I still vote for the leather one!

I've never seen the fabric one IRL - if you have it standing up like it shows, do you have to pick it up each time you want to take a pencil out? That would be a drawback for me. I like the leather one for the fact that I have all my pencils in view and each one has its place. It's really portable, too, and my kids know those are "MOMMY'S PENCILS"...if you got super creative you could stamp on the leather too. Seems durable, and good for the price. They did just have them on sale, not sure if they are still. As far as price, though, if that happens to be your issue between the two, the leather one is only $7.50 more for the 120 one...!
