I just took a look at it, and it seems to do exactly the same as scal. The only difference I saw was that it is a lot more expensive!
With Make the Cut you don't have to open your images in a separate program like you do with SCAL and it does do more things than SCAL does. Right now it's on sale for $77 with an extra 10% off.

MTC wont clean up, just seperate, which is useless when you have a dodgy scan. I find it easier to use paintshop pro or photoshop to split jpgs apart and do any tidying up as I go.
I downloaded the trial version of the MTC software and played with it. After the first 30 minutes of working with it, here's my first impressions. (I am just a crafter and do not sell either of these programs so my opinion was not influenced by that.)
Some of my favorite fonts (that are installed on my computer) would not work in MTC. (they work fine in the SCAL2 program)
Also, when working with fonts, I noticed it doesn't have a black out feature like SCAL2 has.
As far as the claims about easy tracing in MTC. I picked a simple 5 color clip art image and traced it with MTC. No matter what number I selected, both high, medium or low, the traced image turned out all jagged and spotty. So, I would suggest that anyone who is considering purchasing this program, should download the trial version and try it first.
As far as the claims that the program is intuitive or easy to use, I did not find that to be the case. It has a learning curve just like SCAL or Design Studio does.
subbing to this topic! I am very interested in getting one of these programs and I am not sure I understand the difference bet MTC and SCAL. I was wondering how much does either program cost?
I just bought MTC for $65 on MyCricutBuddy.com. SCAL is older and a little pricier and cannot do everything MTC can do. I understand the learning curve is higher as well, although as a newbie I'm also learning MTC slowly. So far I'm pleased. There are websites that have tutorial and there is a message board, similar to SCS for Make the Cut. You cannot use your Cricut cartridges in the SCAL program, but you as you said, you can just unplug your usb cable from your Cricut and use it like normal. Actually, you may not even need to unplug the cable. You could probably just use your Cricut like you normally would while it is still connected to your computer. I have never tried this, mostly because whehn it is plugged into my computer, I'm only using SCAL with it and not cutting anything from my cartridges. I just bought my Sure Cuts last week, I have a mac so I can't use CDS. I just wish I knew how to use it. Call me stupid but I'm clueless!

I had bought myself a Cricut Expression for Christmas, and I love it. I was asking these same questions a few months ago. My mother gave me DS, and I like it. It is very easy to use, but I had read about the SCAL program and it intrigued me. I did A LOT of research, and decided I had to buy it. I have not regretted it at all. In fact, I use it more than I use my carts! I do like have the DS in addition to it, because it allows a lot of flexibility.
There are a lot of great websites out there that offer free images and fonts, and if you don't know how to convert a cartridge file, I bet there is someone on one of the SCAL forums who would help you out. I recently went to a scrapbooking weekend, and I can honestly say, I maybe one time used DS. Otherwise I used SCAL the entire weekend. I really like all of the options you have with it.
I did do the free trial for SCAL. It was very easy to figure out. I highly recommend doing the trial.

If anyone is on the fence about Make the Cut!, you can download the free trial and try it out, there is no time limit on the trial. It is a fully functioning version of MTC, however it cuts a watermark line through any cuts you send to your Cricut.
