I recently purchased the SU tabletop cutter ($46) and am very disappointed with it. When I cut with it, it leaves a terribly jagged edge towards the end of the cut -- is the worst with 11 or 12" paper.
I've tried varying the pressure I apply to the plastic piece that holds the paper down, as well as varying the speed and intensity of how I bring the handle down to cut.
It is worse than my Fiskars personal cutter, with the orange blades! If anyone can shed some light on this and possibly redeem its use as a cutter I would appreciate it. For $46, it should cut perfectly.
Art is intended to provoke an emotion from a total stranger. If youve succeeded in this, consider yourself an artist. Paper Shanks Blog. Love me or hate me, you are still talking about me
I just got mine and think it's better than any other cutter that I have owned... even the fiskars tabletop rotary cutter. So I agree with the previous posters that there may be something wrong with the one you got (bummer!!!). Give this a shot before you send it back...
Try "cutting" without any paper and be sure to cut untill the handle is all the way down. This sharpens the blade, and may help. If not, contact your demo or DS and ask for a replacement.
I have to jump in and say that I have had several different cutters and the table top cutter from SU is the only one I have used that has consistently given me a fray fee cut! I, too, think you have a defective cutter.
I am so glad you posted about this. I have had the same problem with mine. I have stopped using it. I wonder if it is too late to call. I am definitely going to call demo support in the morning.
thanks for the responses! i have let my demo know about the situation and no doubt she will deal with it this coming week. hopefully i can get it replaced quickly ... sounds like it's a decent cutter, when it works properly.
I have one also and it works perfectly. I LOVE how straight my cuts are, compared to when I had a Fiskars. I hope you get it all straightened out ... hahahaha, get the joke ... seriously, I hope you can get it exchanged real soon.
Call SU and get permission to send it back. I ordered one, and had to have them ship me 4 before I got a good one for my customer. I bought mine at a local store, and LOVE it. The SU one is identical...but they seem to have gotten a bad run from the manufacturer.
Keep after it until you get a good one. I've made 10,000s of cuts with mine, and it's still perfect. Excellent, perfect cuts.
When I first got mine I experienced the same thing at times. I discovered that I was cutting too hard and fast and not applying pressure on the plastic guard at the bottom of the cutter. Once I corrected those things, I have never had another problem.
Just as a point of interest, the SU cutter is made by Tonic and there have been threads about how the Tonic cutters are the best on the market. There are two other sizes made besides the one SU carries.
I agree with everyone - it is the best cutter I have found. I really think you need to contact your demo and get a new one - I think you will be super happy with one that cuts right. They are great. Good luck!!
I have had mine for over a year and love it. I received it used from a demo who had used it as a demo model at a large training meeting so it had been used by many and cut lots before I received it. However, I know of a few others who have had problems. Here were some of the solutions:
One cut something that left an invisible residue on blade (Simply Scrapping Self Adhesive Die Cut), once the blade was cleaned it worked better.
Two had to adjust the tension of the arm. You will find the black weird screw thing on top right corner of the arm. It has 6 sides. My husband had the correct tool in his work bench to adjust.
I know another who had to send theirs back to SU with no problems.
I hope this helps. I have the big fiskers, 2 different small fiskers, and a large Carl Cutter but none of them compare to the SU/Tonic cutter.
