I ALWAYS have it handy. I use it for 2 step stamping of course, also when I make cards that are lacking the sentiment then I use it to align the sentiment just right, I use it to preview options since you can see thru the plastic and it's a must have for stamping letters or words lined up.
You can't go wrong for $15.

Love it! Use it every time I stamp.
I bought a few sheets of heavy weight quilt template plastic and cut it into 4" squares using an old rotary cutter. I keep one with each (not punch coordinating sets) stamp set. When I stamp the plastic sheet, I always use a waterproof ink like basic brown or black. By doing this, I have a permanent reference sheet and it saves me one step.
I use it constantly, so I can position a stamp to stamp exactly where I want it. It's great for building scenes, stamping onto small pieces like die cuts, etc.
I can't think of any cons for this awesome tool. I think it's one of those tools that are worth every penny.

I was just going to say the same thing! There really are no cons - the only way to get a perfectly lined up image EVERY TIME is to use a stamp-a-ma-jig. Great tool!
I only regret NOT buying it! My sister in law bought it for me after I'd been stamping about a year. She said, "I know you're into that stamping thing now, and somebody told me this is a great tool."
Only, I didn't understand how to use it. When somebody showed me, I felt like, "What took me so long?"
I will say the stamp-a-jig is my only regret for having unmounted my stamps. When my stamps were on blocks, I could have a permanent image sheet for those stamp. Now that I'm unmounted, the stamp isn't always on the same place on the block everytime I use it, so I've had small regrets about unmounting simply because I love my SAMJ so much! It really does work exactly like it says, and I love it.
Get it! You won't regret it. Just, if you aren't sure how to use it, find somebody who can SHOW you. I'm the kind of person I have to be shown.
Hmmmmmmmm think my grandkids would notice if I bought them duplos and stole 3?
Haha... Don't think so but I found the lego that has smaller size than duplos works better because it stick together better and it is kind of slimmer so easier to handle. I am trying to find a way of sticking a magnetic sheet underneath it so won't move when I remove the transparency sheet.
I don't use my SAMJ that often, just because I'm lazy. I have most of my stamps unmounted or they are clear, so the only draw back to the SAMJ is having to stamp the image each time on the clear sheet. I also use the rock-o-blocs quite often so the SAMJ doesn't work with them (not that I can figure out anyway or haven't seen anything on here on how to use the SAMJ and rock-o-blocs).
Me too! Look out for bags of lego bricks at yard sales or goodwill stores if, like me, you don't have kids to steal them from and you'll most likely end up with a stamp positioner and a bunch of spare bricks for a couple of bucks . I use the heavy clear sheet that came on the back of a set of cling mount stamps for my positioning sheet.
I'm another fan of the "preview" use of this tool - if I worked on a card and am considering adding just one last thing, I want to know how it's going to look before I mess up all the work I just did - stamp on the sheet, hold it over your project and you can decide exactly where to put that new element (or even whether to leave it off all together).
I held out a while before buying the Stmap-a-jig, but after seeing several youtube videos, I knew it was a must have for me. I always had trouble judging where my stamped image was going to be exactly, or was it going to be slightly off. I don't use it everytime I stamp- but I use it alot and I also made up extra sheets to stamp on in case 1 gets inked with Stazon on accident. I purchased mine thru Gina K designs because it was her videos that made me want it- and who showed me the purpose of it- and then even taught me how to use it. Thank You Stamp TV
No cons at all---except for the times when I say I don't need it and then mess up the card, LOL
I also am always cutting up anything clear plasticy for use as permanent sheets to keep with the sets.
I also had the lego one, before I bit the bullet and bought it---and to be honest with you, the lego one works, so try it first.
...dare I say it, easily five years because I couldn't figure out how to use it. Then Gina K. of Stamp TV came along and did a tutorial. I ran to get it. Once I figured it out, I LOVED it.
For me it was great because I started buying stamps that you have to piece together like flowers to stemps because they were all separate.
Then I came across my Stamp-A-Liner and now use it for the same thing. Not as good because you can't keep it from sliding, but I like that it is clear so I know where to place it.
I had to get one, and then I never used it for the longest time. Then once I figured out how to really put it to use, I have used it much more. I mostly use it to line up sentiments and words with an image on the card, or if I feel like I need to be a total perfectionist. Other times I just wing it. I think it's worth the money and is a handy tool.
I don't use it all the time but once in a while things like 2-step outlines and letters need to be lined up precisely, beyond what I can eyeball, and this is the best tool do to it. It's not a huge investment, will never wear out or use up and doesn't take much storage space. Buy it!

I only use mine for things like trees and flowers that have a couple steps. I think I'm just too lazy to use it all the time.

Wendy,
I buy the thin plastic cutting boards at the Dollar Store (get mine at Dollar Tree). They are about the same thickness as the mat that comes with the SAMJ and about the same transparency. You can cut several out of them. They are about the size of a placemat and you get a couple in a package.

I love my SAMJ the only "draw back" and it's not really a draw back but if you have wood mounted stamps that are stamped on permanent ink (I have done this with staz on and transparency sheets and keep them in the clam shell boxes with the set all ready to go) is that you can't do the same thing with un mounted stamps since you won't be able to mount it in the exact same spot every time. So, with UM stamps you have to stamp on the imagining sheet each time you mount the stamp. Not really a big deal, just something I didn't think of when I went mostly unmounted. I really should use mine more often but a lot of the time I just wing it...sometimes unsuccessfully! :-)
1. I decide I don't want to spend 15 bucks on a piece of plastic if I'm not going to use it. (Note: I happen to love plastic, so it isn't a sign of great eco-consciousness on my part. Just thought I should confess all).
2. I beg my friend with more legos and duplos than man should be allowed to produce much less consume (ie: buy), to bring me 3 of each kind so I can make one and try it before spending 15 bucks on a piece of plastic I may not use.
3. I read this thread and half way through, I go to papermaniac to get cheap nestabilities on sale and throw in a stamp-a-ma-jig... BEFORE my friend shows up with legos (note: Legos are still not in my possession.)
Conclusion: I have an illness.
just sayin'
That's another thing... anyone know a stamp out there that says... "Just sayin'"?

I'm just sayin...
I haven't stamped in weeks (due to lack of time, doing wedding planning, and having lost my mojo)....AND I just bought almost $200 worth of stuff yesterday morning when the Summer Mini went live....
AND, I'm already scheming for my big catty demo pre order....just realized I get paid 2 days before June 1...good thing....
I think I need some kind of therapy!!! So you are SO NOT alone, LOL!
I use it when I am combining 2 or more image stamps. For instance, to make a character sit on a bench. I stamp the character, mask them, then use the stamp positioner to line them up properly. I use an old PSX stamp positioner, and I recently bought the Cathie Allan, Position It tool.
No cons from me, I just wish that I'd bought it sooner instead of thinking oh, I don't really need that.
Much of the time I stamp first and then cut my image panel. BUT, there are times you want to get a sentiment just right, or line something up with something else already on the panel, and then the SAMJ is just what you need. I consider it as one of those tools that should always be within reach, and while I don't use it every day, I definitely use it at least a couple of times a week. I save the clear packaging from embossing folders and Nestabilities for spare sheets to stamp on, and for much-used stamps I stamp them on thick vellum and keep that with the stamp set.
In fact, the SAMJ means that on the whole I prefer my sentiment stamps mounted, while I like image stamps UM. It means I can stamp once and have a permanent reference sheet to use with the jig, whereas when they're unmounted you have to stamp each time, 'cos you're never going to position it in exactly the same place on the acrylic block.
I'm sure a homemade one would work just as well. But as a tool, definitely go for it.
I love my SAMJ! The other day I needed to quickly make up a card for a co-worker as I was getting ready for work in the morning - the night before she called to annouce that she and her husband were expecting their first child. I didn't have time to make the card that night and as I was getting ready for work, I decided that I just HAD to make her a card right away! Hard to believe it, but I managed to make an adorable little card all while I was brushing my teeth!! I couldn't have done such a good job without my SAMJ - I placed everything just right on the first try. (Guess I need to work on having pre-made cards handy for last minute surprises like that!)
Anyway... on a side note, I felt pretty good about my multi-tasking skills that morning until I hopped out of my car to catch the train and realized I had a pair of old socks logged in the crotch of my pants as I ran accross the parking lot to catch the train! I LMAO when I got to the office and made a made dash to the restroom to remove the socks from my pants - it was so funny and yet terrifying at the same time since the socks kept creeping down my left leg with every step I made! I was so worried that they would work their way out on their own and I would have a hard time explaining myself to anyone who saw them fall out of my pant leg. Anyway... made for a good laugh but thanks to my SAMJ - I still had a perfect card to give my friend! Next time I'll have to do a better job of putting my laundry in the hamper rather than throwing things down on the bedroom floor like I obviously did with those socks! Guess I'm just a stamping nut - but hey, it keeps a smile on my face! ;)

Thanks so much for sharing your funny!! It sure made me laugh to imagine you dashing along with those socks making their way out.

Totally agree! I love mine. Use it all the time to ensure things are straight. I'm a totally crooked stamper without it! LOL.
Another SAMJ user here. I got mine at Mike's with a coupon, so it wasn't all that expensive, either. (Not being a SU demo lol...) I use mine especially for my wood-mounted sentiments, since quite a few of them are just crooked enough to mess me up otherwise. And yes, for a few I've microwaved and repositioned, but I don't always get it perfect, either...
