Call Quickutz. Their customer service will walk you through using the machine and even remote connect to your PC if you like. They may decide your blade was bad, too. I would call them.
My first Silhouette I had terrible trouble cutting through SU cardstock, designer paper, and well, everything. It was defective and they replaced it. I had to cut 3 times on the max setting and it still didn't cut through. I think they actually had a batch of bad blades, but they replaced my whole machine after trying new blades didn't work. My second Silhouette cuts beautifully (so far).
The following is basically what you'd get from the manual: I use a red cap and the 90 lb setting for SU cardstock. You can adjust the speed and thickness, try the 3 and 30 for Bazzill or SU, this may do the trick and is important for intricate designs. It does cut through to the mat for me, but not deeply. Very light. I haven't figured out if this is normal or not. On my last machine it did not cut through to the mat unless I was using regular thin paper. Make sure your blade notch is pointed in the 3 O'clock position toward the blue light button. For texture cardstock, I would consider cutting upside down on the paper, on the smooth side of the cardstock. Just do mirror for your image or text.
Ilovecraftrobo.com has many great tips and tutorials on using the machine. I really, really suggest that you look at her page.
I am still not sure about mine, but then I had a bad machine to start. The new one seems ok, but I am still hesitant. However, I was able to make some cute cards with it just the other day. Tonight I am going to give it a work out and try making about 8 nugget boxes for my girls night out tomorrow. If it still works after that, I will say this machine is good. :-)
