Which Sewing Machine?
I really, really want a sewing machine for my cards and maybe a stray hem here and there (MAYBE, probably not!).
So, I just saw this new machine on HSN, its the Singer Pixie Plus and then of course there is the Janome Sem Mini. Both are around the same price but I really love all the little extras that come with the Singer model.
Can y'all tell me your reviews and thoughts on both of these machines??
I saw the Pixie at Walmart the other day for $49.95 and told DH that I think I'd really like to have that for Christmas. I'm subscribing to this thread for more info.

I saw it at the College Drive walmart and the one on Portsmouth Blvd by the mall. But I don't think it comes with all the threads and stuff that the one on the website does. It's a purple machine. If you get it, let me know what you think!

PURPLE??
My favorite color
If dh didnt order the one from HSN...I have hinted a few times...then I'll go and look for that one!
Janome, Janome, Janome. That's my answer. They don't call me Sewnmachine fer nothin! I have 14 sewing machines.... Janome, New Home (now owned by Janome), Elna, Singer and Brothers. And my personal opinion is anything Janome is your best bet. I don't know what price range you're in - but I'm assuming this is a craft machine only. So, if there is even a slight possiblity you would need to do some real sewing.........go with the Janome.
Many years ago when I quit smoking, I started buying sewing machines.....and actually bought what I believe to be my last this past spring with our stimulus check. I of course don't have them all set up in my sewing room, but I do use them all and love each and every one of them. In fact I'm off to my sewing room right now to cut out a couple of fleece sleepers for my grandson.
Anyway, whichever you buy, have fun with it.

I recently bought mine from costco. I'm loving it and it does everything from paper-sewing to hemming my bedskirt. Here's the link It's 89.99 and it includes shipping and handling.

...i bought the janome mini this summer...i used it to make a purse...only limitation was sewing thru the thick layers when i added the handles, but for light crafting i really like it...not a bad price either...hope santa brings you your sewing machine, whichever brand you choose...
I have the Janome as well and I LOVE it. I even use it to sew my kids' Scout patches on their uniforms and it works without an issue.
I will say this: it looks "cheap" to me...every bit seems plastic, but honestly, that is what keeps it light and portable. In addition, I have not had anything break and, like I said, I am sewing more than paper.

I'm so glad you like Janome machines. I don't sew much but my 35 year old singer died this year. Not knowing much about machines my local sewing center steered me toward a Janome and I got it. Since I had not heard of that brand I was hoping I didn't get taken. Now I feel much better about it. I've had it for three months so it's still new to me. Thanks for the info on it.
my dh bought me an inovis 4000d brother machine for our 10th anniversary and it does everything but make pizza

I think one plus that the Singer has over the Janome is a worklight. Have you ever tried sewing without a light on the machine? It's tough, trust me! That alone has me considering the Singer.
My Janome Sew Petite/Mini must be a lemon. It's a piece of garbage. I overpaid because I bought it from a LSS. It immediately broke. I had to pay to send it to Janome and pay for the return shipping. It still does not sew correctly.
I'm getting rid of it when my community does the next "garbage pick up day".
Did You read the reviews for the Singer not a very good rating, the foot pedal stops working, and the Janome on Overstock is not brand new so I would not buy it from them. Buy it somewhere else if you go with it. I do not have either of these machines I have a cheap, cheap one my girl friend gave me now I do have one for sewing material and I would not sew paper on it not recommend buy the company. I'm thinking about buying the janome after Christmas time.
DJ
well I have both the pixie and the janome and I must say that the Janome is 100 times better than the pixie. And yes the threads that come with the singer pixie are very cheap. Anyways, I've had to return my pixie because the thread kept getting stuck, there was something wrong with the tension. the second one is ok, not as good as the janome. I do like that the singer has the light, and the two speeds to be used without a foot pedal. Another thing is that the singer has 2 different stitches than the janome, so I just use both depending on what my preference is at the moment. My dd likes to use the pixie more I have no clue why.
I would sure love to hear what u decided on now that the time has passed by.
I sew way more than I stamp and I recommend Janome all the way. I have owned TOL Janome machines since 1990. They are built to last and are very user friendly.
Last time I looked the Janome was on sale at Hancock.com for $39.99!! I love it. I have a bunch of tutorials on my blog on everything from threading it to setting the tension.
I used to have a Pfaff embroidery machine and a five thread serger. (Sewing used to be my hobby before I took up stamping.) I have to say that for the price, this little machine is great! I fixed my daughter's pants with it too.
Great machine.

Gee thanks Gina! I just had to go order the Sew Mini for $39.99. Having been a Bernina fan forever, Im acustomed to quality sewing products and Janome is right up there hands down. I almost went for the "local" Pixie @ Walmart but your heads up swayed my decision. I say go for which machine is easiest for you to aquire.......for crafting Im sure either will be sufficient. Just my thoughts!
Taking my Sew Mini out of the box right now! I have Gina's tutorial on my screen, all ready just in case, lol. My friend loaned me her old Kenmore ~~ just to get me going because I had NEVER USED A MACHINE. But it was huge & heavy ~~ I couldn't believe I could easily lift the Sew Mini with one hand ~~ it's going to be so handy! I got mine the day after Thanksgiving at Hancock for $39.99 ~ can't beat that!
I brought one of those $15.00 machines online - what a joke. It was so small I couldn't even thread it, and I have tiny hands. I guess I'll have to get out my Singer Golden Touch and Sew (1970 model) and stitch away. I will check into the Sew Mini and Janome models.
Well I got my Sew Mini all set up ~~ thanks to Gina's tutorials ~~ love the pictures ~ the pics in the manual are USELESS!! Thanks, Gina!! Wow ~ soooo much easier to thread than the one I was using, & wow is it fast! The hardest part was getting the bobbin in & threaded through ~~ but once I figured it out the rest was easy peasy ~~ if I can do it anyone can!!
I just returned my Pixie yesterday to Walmart. I really liked it when I first got it, but the pedal broke after the second use (Singer did replace it, but then I had problems with the second one too). Then 2 days ago the bobbin mechanism broke....I had only used it about 12 times. So I went to a sewing machine store in town and bought a REAL sewing machine for 200.00 (Janome) and LOVE it. I'm only going to use it for crafting, but could use it for fabric if I needed. Bottom line, spend the extra 150.00 for a good basic sewing machine...it is a world of difference. Oh, and I have a 2 year warranty and free private lessons included with my machine...now that's service!!! The Pixie has a 90 day warranty.
Same here. It's hard to believe they can make a machine that works for $39.99 (sale price).
Gina K has posted links to her Janome tutorials, which are more helpful than the information that comes with the machine. Here's a link to that thread: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
