setting eyelets

:???: Hi, I've been stamping for almost two yrs now. I've always used non SU eyelets, except at parties, until now. I just got some SU eyelets today, I have the 1/16 and 1/8 in punches. I THINK those are the ones I need? BUT, for some reason, I cannot get the eyelet to "squish" the way it's supposed to. What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!!

I don't really have any advice for you but I didn't want your post to get lost. I personally only use SU eyelets and set them with a hammer and a setter. I like to pound things especially after work. I never had sucess using hole punches and it isn't recommended by SU because it might break your punch. Hopefully someone else has some advice for you.

Default setting eyelets

HI , I cannot set eyelets with a hammer so I have the Provo Craft Silent Setter...it works with SU eyelets and any aluminum ones... I cannot set them with the punch like some say you can... I wish you luck...

Hi Jovita,

I just bought a Crop-o-Dile and I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. It doesn't work on 1/16" does it? It doesn't say on the package, I almost didn't buy it because of that since I *LOVE* the teensy 1/16" eyelets. If I'm missing something let me know.

As far as setting advice...I use a small piece of fiberboard from a broken bookshelf as a "mat". Be sure to use the correct size hole for the correct eyelet. I prefer to use the kind of setter that has a "nib" on the tip rather than the one that tapers to a point. It tends to over-squish in my hands. Make sure the "nib" is in the hole and, holding it straight up and down, give a couple of GOOD whacks with a hammer (I use a little hammer that came with a jewelry wire set..it's got plastic on the tip so it doesn't mark up what I hit with it). If the eyelet isn't squished enough, give it another tap...lighter this time or you can oversquish. Once I'm happy with the setter, I give it a little tap or 2 with the hammer without the setter to flatten it a bit more.

The setter sold by SU is a cone one, making it possible to use any size of eyelets. It will not, however, break the back of the eyelet apart and make a "flower"-shaped back like other setters do. I think it takes a little bit more work to get the eyelet to flatten out because of that.

That being said, I personally use the ProvoCraft Silent Setter, the same somebody mentioned before. I live in an apartment building and I used to hate eyelets because setting them with a hammer was just so loud. So I bought the Silent Setter and it solved my problem! It works *great* with the SU eyelets because they're made of soft metal, so you only need a little push on the handle to flatten them out. Works like a charm! My silent setter does split the back of the eyelet apart and makes the "flower" I was talking about, so the eyelet is very flat once it's set. The Silent Setter comes with three sizes of hole punches and setters (1/16, 1/8, and 1/4) and the heads attached with a magnet, making it really fast to switch from one attachment to another.

HTH!

I have the Crop-a-dile as well. Why didn't they come out with it sooner? I have ever product on the market. This is the best thing since sliced bread! You can get it at Joanne Fabrics, Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Watch for a 40% off coupon. Best money I have spent in a long time.

If you only have both of those punches, use the 1/8" punch to make the hole for the eyelet. Next add the eyelet. Use the 1/16" punch to set the eyelet. Insert the little thingie that usually makes the hole through the eyelet hole and squeeze the hole punch like you would making a hole. That will spread out the back of the eyelet and set it.

I too bought the 2 fiskars punches and cannot get them to work. So I bought the Crop-A-Dile and it's AMAZING how simple it is to use on any size eyelet. It just takes a little while to figure out which tops and bottoms to use for which eyelets. I love it! :-D

Gee - I just bought a Crop-o-dile and ended up taking it back because it just looked too complicated. Maybe I screwed up! Oh well - there's always the next 40% coupon - or 50% Michael's on Labor Day!!

I agree-- it definately looks complicated!
But if you stick with it and keep the back cardboard on hand, you'll get it in no time. I end up using the same size eyelets most of the time anyhow so I don't have to change the settings often.

Good luck

I just purchased a Crop a Dile and I have a question. What are the back of the eyelets supposed to look like? Mine do not look good yet. I have to practise a bit more.

THanks for your help!

My backs are flat but plit into almost 4 sections. It's not as pretty as with the hammer but it's a hell of a lot easier (and quieter). Pllus, I live in an apartment and can't use the hammer way.
Let me know if you figure out a way to make it a nice neat circle.
Good Luck

Does the crop-a-dile only extend to a certain length? Or can you use it to set eyelets on anywhere in the paper (i.e center of the card?) The silent setter can be set anywhere, can the crop-a-dile do that? Hopefully my questions are clear. (I just want to know if the crop-a-dile reaches far back enough or is it limited to a certain length.)
thanks.

:( Unfortunately, you are correct. The Crop-a-dile can only reach a certain length. I never though of that before! That's not a good thing huh?

I have the crop-a-dile and love it. The only thing is, I have to think now about where I should set the eyelets or snaps. Since it won't reach into the center of the paper I just figure how I'm going to layer my project and take care of putting the eyelets on then. That way I can still have the eyelets in the center of the card but they are just on the layering that I have done. Hope you can understand what I mean. It really hasn't been a problem for me not being able to reach into the center of the project. Hope this helps.

Thanks Hazelnut3! I'm glad I got this info before I go out and get one. I was looking at it in the store and it looks relatively easy to use (with all the needed gadgets attached to it) but the length or how long it can reach was on my mind. Thanks for the clarification. I ended up buying the silent setter. For thos who owned one: does it make alot of noise? (I have 2 young ones and everytime I get out my hammer, you can hear it banging. I'm hoping the silent setter is quiet enough.)
Thanks so much for your input and help!!!
I also got the 1/8 and 1/16: Which way do you point the eyelet?
"If you only have both of those punches, use the 1/8" punch to make the hole for the eyelet. Next add the eyelet. Use the 1/16" punch to set the eyelet. Insert the little thingie that usually makes the hole through the eyelet hole and squeeze the hole punch like you would making a hole. That will spread out the back of the eyelet and set it."

I asked these questions a long time ago and the people who are able to set them with the hole punches have an older version of the punches. Fiskars re-designed their punches and if you have bought them in the last couple of years - they won't work for setting eyelets. I think it was mentioned that they did this b/c Fiskars also sells eyelet setters and it was cutting into their sales for the hole punches to do "double duty" as eyelet setters too!

aweeee, no wonder! I tried and it just made my eyelet punch a bigger hole in my hole puncher. Oops, maybe I could go return it.....
