Here there everyone! I am in the process of organizing my stamping supplies and I am trying to decide on the purchase of a personal labeler. I know DYMO and BROTHERS are great brands. For this week only the Brother labelers are on sale at Office Depot, however; in reading their packaging I noticed that none brings an AC adapter (so I have to either buy batteries by the truckload or get rechargables), additionally their label cartridges are expensive. I would like to see what the preferred labeler is among my stamping fellows and/or get suggests of what to consider in doing this purchase. Thanks in advance.
I have the Dymo Letra Tag (handheld) labelmaker. I got it at Michaels a while ago and used a 40% coupon (it was about $25). I love it and label my craft goodies, my boxes of decorations and even my power cords. It runs only on batteries though - 6 of them. The instructions tell you to take the batteries out if you won't be using the labeler daily to save juice. I buy refills cartridges with coupons at Michaels too. Good luck in your quest.
I have a Brother PT-1280 that I purchased from Staples about a year ago when they had it on sale for around $10. I love it! It doesn't have different fonts installed, but you are able to choose bold & italic variations and for my purposes, that's enough.
I went with the Brother brand because we used a more deluxe model at work and I was familiar with it - it does use 6 AAA batteries at a time, but they last a long time. The cartridges seem expensive, but there's a lot of tape on them and they last a long time. I usually buy them with my Staples rewards from returning ink cartridges The refill tapes do last longer if you key in multiple labels with spaces between them, print them, and then cut them apart - the machine leaves quite a bit of blank label on each side each time you print.
I had the Dymo, too. I was pretty happy with it, but for some reason my screen started to have portions that you could not read. I e-mailed the company and was told, tough bounce, they are cheap, buy a new one.
I bought a Brother last week. I guess $20 - $25 isn't that expensive, but I thought I'll try a different brand and hopefully I will have better results. I was able to buy the Brother in a much better model than my Dymo at Office Max for $21 including tax.
I have the Dymo Letra, an older version. I have had it for over 5 years now. Never have I had to replace the batteries & it is easy to change out cartridges "mid-stream". I generally use the plain old white paper one, but have also used the iron-on (don't know if they still make that, but it was great for labelling soft-sided lunchboxes!), and one of the more plastic-y ones (similar to the old-school non-electronic Dymo tapes). I usually get the tape refills with a coupon. I think Michaels carrys them. Target used to, also.
There is only one font, but you can change between upper & lowercase, change the size (mine has 3 settings), print two lines on a tape. I don't remember if it does italics or bold. I've never had use for either. Labels I made and stuck on my scrapbooking drawers over 5 years ago are still going strong, inspite of being stored in a craft room which is unheated/un-cooled, so lots of temp. extremes.
I have a Dymo LetraTag, it is probably 3-4 years old. Hubby bought it for me at Wal-Mart. I use it all the time, the batteries seem to last. The refills also seem to last a long time- the only problem I have had is with the clear tape- that if it gets fairly old it won't print out my labels- but the white tape has never givin me a problem. I love my labler.
another vote for Dymo Letra Tag (handheld) labelmaker. I have two of them and use them all the time. I wish the tape was cheaper but I guess I can get it at Michaels with a coupon and probably should. I have a green one and a red one. Dont remember what I paid but I have been very happy with them.
blessings.
I had an original Brother P-Touch for at least 10 years. It finally stopped working after the grandkids played with it. I replaced it with another P-touch, and am very happy with it.
The batteries and cartridges do last a very long time.

Ladies I appreciate all the input, and it appears that Dymo is the most popular. In addition I can always use the Michael or Hobby Lobby coupons toward get initially the labeler and later the printing tape. Thanks for all the wonderful input.
my michaels has a very pretty pink one and it comes with a few rolls of the tape, not sure what the name was, was more interested in the color! LOL but it was only 19.95....so with a coupon could get for around $11! not a bad deal. and its something the whole family can use tooo
