Default Ribbon Storage???

I'm looking for different storage system for my ribbons. I have those 9 small basket bin that you get from walmart. they all are full of different type and I found out the hard way today that it does not work for me. I lost several colored one. Obviously I need a better system.

So I'm curious to what type of system are you using? I really don't want the baggies one -- I tried that and it did not work.

95% of my ribbons came from Jody Morrow (TexasJodyLynn).

Thanks for your suggestions!!!

I didn't get a chance to add that NONE of them are on spool --- only SU ones but those are sitting in the gutter system on my wall..... the baskets are just all tangled up... not on spool or anything...

Here's how I've begun storing my ribbon. They're magnetic spice tins and are perfect size for 10+ yards of ribbon. I like that I can see the colors so easily. I got the tins at Meijer for $1.99 each. But I've seen them online as well as at Bed, Bath & Beyond. hth!!

i got some nice large glass jars w/lids from the dollar store, took all my ribbon off their spools and wound them up, tied then with a single knot, and stuck them in their respective color jars...

yellow/orange, red/pink, purple/brown, blue/green, black/white, rainbow (multiple colors, no dominant) themed ribbon goes in with the colors, like the baby blue "baby boy" ribbon goes in the blue jar...

i also have a plastic shoe box with a whole lotta loose ribbon that i: a) can't fit in the color jars, or b) haven't gotten to wind up yet but threw away the spool cuz it was taking too much room.

i know people have strung them on binder rings and hung it from shelving, it looks too messy for me. i like that in their large jars, the mess is contained.

Default Ribbon Storage

I have been buying my ribbon storage boxes from here:

http://www.orientaltrading.com/appli...GE+BOX+FROSTED

LOVE these! They are cheap and hold 34 different colors of ribbon!

I'm going to look for these - they look more kittyproof than anything else I've seen!!! I like the boxes someone shows from Oriental Trading - if the spice tins don't work, I think I can make one of those!! THANKS TO YOU ALL!! N.

I checked out the spice tins at BB&B online store - they don't show those slotted holes, but are they there already or did you put them in? Also, about how much ribbon will fit.... a whole SU spool?? I'm guessing they are a little small for that... still a great idea and will try it though! Thanks - Splitcoasters are the best...

I found these awesome ribbon storage boxes at Joanne's. Don't remember the maker but they are about 12 inches long, 4 inches tall. They are white on bottom with a clear llifting lid. They're also stackable. I love them! HTH. Christine

Ah... another cat owner....do you have kittyproof ribbon solutions?? My ribbons are all in a drawer, and come unraveled. My demo uses an extendable roofing eavestrough - very clever - but the ribbon ends dangle out and my cats (four! three black, hence the avatar, and one black & white) would have too much fun with those!!

TAC has GWP boxes (clear small playcon boxes) I have put my ribbon into these and placed them standing upright in a box. I have almost 100 of those in one box...and it isn't even a big box. The cool thing is that if I look into the box I can see all my ribbon at a glance....oh the colors are all coordinated together and it look great! I wish I had a photo but not yet...

My kitty solution is to keep the ribbon in a closed closet. I only have one - black - but one is enough.

What is TAC GWP????

I checked out your blog and the storage option looks awesome and would like to get some of those.

I've seen the magnetic spice tins at Ikea as well and they have the slots in the ends.

You could wrap them around clothes pins. Works great.

I use the ones from Oriental trading. I bought one to see how I liked it. It really worked well. I have since ordered more. I am anxiously waiting for them to arrive. I keep my boxes of ribbon in a closed cupboard. I have cats, too!

The Angel Company..and Gift with a Purchase (GWP) boxes the boxes are made by Placon...they are about 3 x 2 1/2 inches and about 3/4 inch deep. I am horrible at accurately measuring these types of boxes so I might be a tad off. .

Of course, A friend gave me her stash of boxes from all of the free GWP's she received from TAC over the years...but surely there is something comparable that can be purchased out there on the market...I am not sure if TAC would consider selling the boxes...

OH and I did cut slots in the ends of some of the boxes to make it easy to pull the ribbon right out.

Boxes like these are also great for storing small embellishments and keeping them organized.

I have a Christmas tree made of wooden dowels that my Grandfather made me when I was in college. I use it year around to put my ribbon on, it's really cool. It is very narrow to fit in a dorm room window, and it hold spools really well, I'll try to get a picture posted.

The magnetic spice tins I've seen (Meijer, BB&B, online) already have the holes in them. Can't imagine having to *make* the holes myself!
And these seem to be nicely kitty proof as long as you don't leave too much ribbon sticking out. hehehe

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions -- I purchased a dozen of the magnetic spice tins from Meijer and then went over to the school supply area and found a textured metal letter tray to stick them on.

Meijer also does have a set of tins (10 I think) and a magnetic strip to stick them on, and it costs $20. But I have nowhere to put the magnetic strip in my room. I can fit 20 tins on the letter tray and it has loops I can use to hang it on the wall. I'll take a picture when it's all finished -- took awhile to wind the ribbon up off the spools and stack them into the tins.

Some tins, I have 3 or 4 different ribbons in of the same color/style family. Then I pulled a little through the slot and gave it a little twist - the cats can't get it out and it can't slip back in!

This is a magnificent solution to my quandry and I likely wouldn't have discovered it without the help of incredible SCSers!! Thank you all! I hope everyone finds the solution that works just right for them, too.

Just ran across this thread.

Thanks Eva for the suggestion of using the GWP boxes to store ribbon in. Now I can clean up the ribbon mess and use some of thoses boxes that i knew would come in handy some day!!

I took all of my ribbon (except the SU big spools) off the spools and put them into those small ziploc craft bags... then I sorted by color, punched holes with the Crop-a-Dile and but them on Large binder rings by color.

I love it!! Can see all of them at a glance and no tangles - best part is it takes up 1/4 the space!

I love that idea, too!! Maybe if I run out of room for my little spice tins, I can put some odds and ends of ribbons - or those tiny Wal-Mart rolls into the ziploc bag thing. That sounds excellent!! And less expensive...

By the way - I love your signature line...."...a harmless hobby..." - that's priceless!!
