Any of you fellow stampers have any ideas of how to store ribbon in a small space? I use Longaberger baskets to store most of my supplies, but lately my ribbon has taken a life of its own....see PHOTO
I just don't know what to do with it... should I put each in its own little zippy bag or what? Any suggestion are welcome... keep in mind I don't have lots of space!
FANTASTIC!!! Thanks for the link.. I think I can make a couple of these and solve my ribbon woes.. not to mention use some to that ribbon I forgot I had because I can't SEE IT!!!! thanks so much again for sharing!
I bought two nice ribbon holders at M's. Unfortunately they will not hold my large rolls of SU grosgrain- but I have lots of other kinds of ribbon so I am using them for that. They were $9.99 each- but of course I used a coupon! ;)
I wrap mine around tongue depressors....but I've used the wooden clothes pins as well. Takes up MUCH less space than when I kept them on the spools they came on!! I now have all of my ribbon stored in smaller baskets that can be stacked on top of each other. I keep several colors in each basket. (And, I do have LOTS of ribbon, too!) Hope this helps!!

Yeah it looks like your Ribbon has taken over your stamping area.
What I have done with my Ribbon is Put most of it in a Photo Storage box. (The cardboard kind)
And I have also purchase some Clear plastic jars with lids from Wally world. and filled it with the little bobbin ribbon's, The photo's below show you just how I store my ribbon...And the Plastic Storage Drawers is where I store the boxes. I just this thing for Christmas.. I was really needing something to put my Extra stuff in.

I just bought one of these ribbon keepers but haven't used it yet.
These are very cool!! Thanks for the link.
Last time I was at my Meet up group crop night. One of the gals there had made something like this. But she used a 12x 12 Plastic Scrapbook Storage holder. What she did was used a Drill to drill hole for her ribbon and then place all her ribbon inside and pull the loose ends through the hole on the outside. This works great.
I have my ribbon on their original spools lined up in two of the deep drawers of a 4 drawer iris cart. They are sorted by color. When the drawer got too full, I put some in baskets from the dollar tree and stacked them right in the drawer.

Any other suggestions????
I just found (on the clearance rack at Walmart) flat plastic bobbin/spools for embroidery floss. Each spool is about 2" wide, maybe a little longer. Each has two slits on the side to hold both the beginning and ending of the ribbon. You can get lots on them and they are so much smaller to store than the cardboard spools. There is also a hole at one end so you can thread them on a small dowel or something like that. They ones I found has 28 in a pack and I got them for $1. They also had heavy cardboard ones that had 50 or more in them for $1. These are working great for the small pieces that have taken over a Rubbermaid box. Just another suggestion.

This is something I thought a lot about before deciding what to do. I had available wall space, so I purchased vinyl rain gutters from Lowes and cut them into 2.5' lengths and hung 6 of them on the wall on pegboard. I have a photo and a close up of how I did it in my gallery. You can see it here: Rain Gutter Ribbons. This photo was taken before we moved last August and I now have more gutters full of ribbons on a larger wall, but you get the idea. I love how the tails of the ribbons can all hang over the gutter edge and it's easy to see what I have and to get a piece of it or take the whole spool.
The detail showing how we got them to hang straight can be found here: Rain Gutter Detail. The exact instructions are included in the photo description. The reason my hubby had to bend the hooks was so the gutters would hang straight out instead of sagging. It's also important where you drill the hole in the gutter. I have a couple of extra holes due to trial and error, but it doesn't bother the ribbon any! LOL
I have no complaints about this storage system at all. If you don't have the wall space to spare, then this wouldn't work for you. Otherwise, I think it's the best. It's much easier than having them on a dowel where it's so difficult to get one off.
I went to the container store when they had a big sale and got these pieces quite a while ago (I have way more ribbon now, lol). They are made by Elfa and are meant to store CDs/DVDs etc. Then I put a piece of wooden dowel through the center of the spools to keep them from popping out when I pull the ends (which conveniently feed out through the small slots in front.
I use a photo box to hold mine, works well. I have kittys so I cant have my ribbon out. I would love to have it hanging on the wall like that one picture. But you know how kittys and ribbon dont mix
Space used by the spools bugged me *a lot* - so I bagged up ALL of my ribbon (except the big SU rolls) into small and medium sized ziploc bags found in the craft section of Walmart (#100 for 99) - I punched a hole in the top of the bags with my crop-a-dile and sorted by color.
All like colors were put on large binder rings (craft section of WM) and now ALL of my ribbon fits in a space 1/4 of what it was!
Love it... so easy to find the perfect color, so compact, and no dust or pet interference to worry about!

I really love your idea... thanks for sharing.. it is something that I can do right away...plus... I rather spend $$ on more rubbah - not storage! Thanks for sharing... off to get my zippy bags out of the kitchen!:-D
I store mine wrapped around cardboard in a tupperware bread box. It works really well, and I can have A LOT of ribbon in a small space, and it's portable.

I just bought one of these. It's pretty cool. I fit all of my scraps which were in many jars into this one Pull-ez ribbon holder. So compact & portable. It's awesome!
I've read of other people making their own. The plastic packages with the zipper that sheets come in would work well.

I store all my spools in the SU ribbon keepers. But my ribbon scraps are another story - they are all piled together in those rubbermaid tall disposable jars that they have for sale around Christmas time. I like the clothespin idea. I may try that out. Thanks for all the storage tips!

Great! Hope it works for you!
Now if someone can just teach me to USE the ribbon... not to hoard it...
Oh - and to quit buying more until I use up some of the existing stash?

I do a couple different things... For shorter lengths, I wrap the ribbon on round wooden clothes pins and store them in a jar. For long lengths, I leave the ribbon on the spool and store on an altered towel rack. I keep my stampin' up grosgrain ribbon in one of those snap together boxes, sold in the back of the SU catty. (Not the ribbon keeper... it's the box.)
I don't know if these have been mentioned yet or not. Sorry, I just scanned over the previous posts as I am at work and shouldn't be on this forum right now - wink wink!! I use very cheap and thin tenion rods from Wmart. But you need 2 walls to put them between. I don't have a door on the small closet in my craft room so they are between the two walls on either side at the top of the doorway. (I am short so I can have them towards the top of the doorway)!! This really holds a lot. I also use those flip top plastic boxes made for holding scrapbooking supplies and paper. There are some that are not quite for 12x12 paper and are higher than the regular ones. The normal size spools of ribbon fit very nicely. Lastly I use (yes, I have tons of ribbon - probably 200+ spools) the ribbon holders sold at Michaels. They are a long rectangular box with a clear flip top lid. The lid has a little slit so when it is closed, you have the end of the ribbon sticking out just a bit so when you need it, you simply pull and the spool spins inside and you can cut your ribbon without having to open the container. (Hope that makes sense). Oh and these are stackable. I don't like to remove my ribbon from spools if it comes that way. Just too time consuming and I don't like them rolled in jars (although it has a very pretty decorative effect). I have to be able to see all my ribbon - sorted by color. I don't want to have to dig in a jar to find the one I want to use. I also find that by using these three storage options, my ribbon doesn't get wrinkled.
Hope that helps!! A girl can never have too much ribbon !!
In a small space, you should get as much stuff on the walls as possible, to save your floor and desk space. I love curtain rods. For my ribbon scraps, I organize them by color in ziplocks, then punch a hole in the baggies and slide those on the curtain rods, too.

Good luck!
Well don't I feel stupid for not thinking of using the ziplocks and just punching a hole. Dah!!! Thanks for sharing that. You just made my ribbon storage system even better!!!
Thanks for all the ideas! I dont have a lot of ribbon yet, but so far what I do have is in individual ziploc bags still on their spools (one bag for each spool, if I have double of one, it goes in the same bag). And the bags are thrown into one of my craft drawers. And some point I really want to put them on dowels, or the modified towel rack like I saw someone use. I used to have this bagel holder....it had a tall container, much like a spagetti canister, and it had this removeable stand with a skinny dowel thing comeing up from it. Of course, I through that stand part out, it would have come in handy!

I'm so proud of myself!! I spent the whole morning getting my ribbons organized into my new chunks of rain gutter. I stopped on Friday and picked up more rain gutter and finally got it hung today. I decided it was best for me to organize by color family rather than ribbon style. The only ones I put separate were the specialty striped grosgrain.

I also wanted to mention that one gutter section is 34 inches in length and can hold about 45 spools, depending on the width. I have a good mix of 7/8" wide spools down to 1/4" and that's how many I can fit in the gutter.
Since I am a garden person, I attached a 3'x4' piece of white lattice to the wall behind my work area. My ribbons are wound around the old type clothespins, and the slit slips through the openings perfectly. I have like colors together, and can fit about 3 pins in each square opening. I love having them so easily accessible...and they are a pretty display too! For the spools I buy in bulk, they are arranged in a wooded piece that was once used to hold a boy's hot wheel collection. While it was meant to hang on a wall, I use it like a tray under my table. I have tried sooo many options for my ribbons, but this works the best for me.
Ironically, Nichole Heady's (Papertrey Ink) blog had an article on it today about this very subject. Here's what she does: http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/. This looks like a great idea for loose scraps of ribbon. Also sounds like she takes all of her ribbon off the spools and puts them onto these clothespins. Might take some time to get set up, but once it's set up, might be really easy to maintain. Hope this helps!
I love my ribbon gutter. It's eight feet long and sits in my shelf brackets backwards. No screws, just sets there. I did however run out of room and now added two ribbon shelf rows in my Making Memories Embellishment Center. I hate dowel rods running through the ribbon rolls so I cut the dowels and nailed them to the front edge to stop the rolls from rolling off the shelves. Makes for easy plucking and replacement. I still screwed the dowel rod knobs to the shelf unit and safety pin ribbon scraps to a round keyring and hang on the knobs. Checkout my gallery for pics of the ribbon gutter. I like simplistic design and less clutter, now to stop buying so it doesn't become a nightmare again!
I have a ton and a half of ribbon and the first thing I did was take it all off the spool. I couldn't believe how much room this alone saved me.
Then I tried the clothes pin storage but that proved too bulky so now I just wind it all up and secure it with those tiny black rubber bands you can find in the hair section of drugstores.
