You are a super stampin' scientist after my own heart! I'm an engineer and loved your experiment!
I just started watercoloring and have been frustrated with the black ink bleeding.
I'm dying (no pun intended!) to see what happens with the 13 (and still counting???) inks!
I can't thank you enough for doing this!!!:-D

I just got two sets of copics today, and thank you for the information. I did buy the Adirondak ink, and have all the others mentioned. You did all the leg work for me. Eileen

Just a note, and I don't remember if this was mentioned and don't have time to read back right now. I went to Adventures in Stamping here in NE Ohio yesterday, and this guy from the Gary Burlin company was demo'ing the Copic markers. His recommendation for black ink is the Ranger Adirondack ink in Pitch Black. After air drying for 5 minutes, it works just great and does not smear at all!

What a fantastic resource this is! Thank you so much for doing your experiment- you deserve a Medal in Scientific Stamping!
I just got some Prismacolors and am starting to play with them, so this thread is a huge help to me. I have started a wish list of papers and ink to get...

Is it my imagination, or did the Copics actually perform better in this test, too?
Am I allowed to generalize to all markers of the same brand? That is, would Copic 127 Seafoam perform the same as Copic 127 Almost Seafoam? Should you have told us all of the contributing or confounding factors? What about humidity? How far above sea level were you? Do you think we can assume the alcohol caused the smearing, or is it just an association? Was the timer calibrated before you used it? Could there have been user error or equipment fault?

Most importantly, will you do this for watercoloring tools?

Forensic specialists need to know!

Ellen has a fantastic comparison on her blog, too.... I can't put the link since I'm a newbie, but if you click on her Copic Markers category and scroll down to almost the bottom of the first page, you'll see a post dated 8/5/07 that has a really good comparison for the inks.

Thank you so much to both she and the original poster for doing all this hard work for us!
