Ok, first I tried the EZ Bowmaker. Didn't like it. Then I tried the Bowdabra. Didn't like it either.
So I think what I'm looking for is some bowmaker that is a piece of wood with dowels that you can place in different holes. My DH doesn't have the tools to make one for me and I saw one at my LSS but they're sold out but I don't know what it was called. Bow Easy? No, that can't be it.
I wouldn't want this except I saw the Crafter's Companion and it should how to do bows this way, but I don't need that big ole thing.

I have one like you described - wooden with dowels. It's called the Deluxe EZ Bow Maker; it seems to be by Offray, but it makes BIG bows, not for cards.
Got a cribbage board? I bought one at a yard sale, the pegs were a little short but I cut to length for me and whittled down a wooden kabob skewer. Works great and I can make any size bow I need!
I saw the one on the Crafter's Companion; but I have the original boards, so I didn't want to pay $50 just to get the bow maker. My husband has been saying that he'll make me one for months now. Yesterday I got tired of waiting, so I made one out of a styrofoam block and some wooden skewers. It works great, although I don't know how durable it will be. It doesn't matter, though, because it took only about 10 seconds to make the whole thing.
Never thought of using a cribbage board. Do people still play cribbage?
Anyhow, the Bow Easy.....I saw that and it looked so convoluted to me. Actually it looked like brass knuckles made with plastic and I thought...Huh??????????? I was trying to find some videos on it just to see if it would be what I'd want.

I have the Bow Easy and it's okay. My other one I have is the Adjustable Bowmaker. (www.thecardladies.com) I find it easier to use because you aren't juggling holding the ribbon and the Bow Easy. (Bow Easy is made of a flat plastic sheet about the thickness of a credit card but not as slippery) You can make really tiny bow (about 1" across) to larger ones (about 3" across). It had a wood base with holes drilled into it where you place the dowels that come with it. The bows it makes are for cards and scrapbook pages. Some of the other bowmaker are more for floral arrangements.

A coworker's daughter is having a huge yard sale around the corner from my house. She started early. I asked her mother if she had a cribbage board and so they're going to hold it for me. Think I'll give that a try. A wooden kabob skewer? Now where on earth would I get those?
If this doesn't work, I might just have to try the Bow Easy but I really don't want to have to hold something else in my hands while making a bow. We'll see.

Ditto...I've had mine about 10 yrs. Well worth the money...it has paid for itself over and over and over.

Oh WOW why didn't I think of this ?
Thanks!! I have a couple of cribbage boards. And Yes people still play cribbage LOL

I have the Bow Maker & the Bow Easy. I like the Bowmaker better of the 2. Like the OP said, don't want to hold the 'maker' & the ribbon while trying to thread one end of the ribbon through a small hole! I've watched the YouTube tutorials for the Bow Easy but... It's like watching the 'hawkers' at the fair - 'All you have to do is... See how easy it is to use..." You buy it, take it home and it's not sooo easy to use.
I would buy the Bowmaker again if something happened to the one I have. The Bow Easy is somewhere in my crafting area... Of course, this is only my opinion. Hope you find a bowmaker that works for you.
grandmamichelf I have one of the ones with the little pics that a friend gave me...I would be happy to send it to you. Please PM your address to me and it will be on the way to you. I have the Bow Easy and I like that so I don't need that other one.

2 questions....can I buy a Bow Easy in a store like ACMoore or Michaels? and does anyone have a file that has instructions on tying a bow if I make one with wooden dowels? I can't do YouTube on dial up....thanks!
sprtchick, you are the most generous person I know! That is so sweet of you to offer to send your bowmaker to grandmamichelf. You rock
Sorry this is OT but I had to say it

Oh..Lynn you are too kind...but it is just sitting on a shelf looking lonely...so it would love to go to a home where someone would notice it...Thank you for the kind words..I wish I would get a response to my offer..

I have a Bow Easy, but I ordered the Bow Maker from the Card Ladies. It is very nice bow maker and very well made. It will make tiny 1" bows to 3" bows It has printed directions with pictures . It even has little rubber type feet to keep it from sliding on the table when in use. The dowels clip onto the base so they can't be lost
It took 3 weeks to get it, but it was worth the wait.

Maybe you could get those at Wal-Mart or other department store in the cooking or grilling section...we have some that came in a pack and that's probably where they came from. I just can't remember for sure.

You DO have to hold the Bow Easy in your hand the entire time you are making the bow. Check out the YouTube videos to see how it works before you buy it. It works fine but there is quite a learning curve to understand how it works
Person who started this thread never responded...I sent the bow maker to another lady who was looking for one.
blessings.
You know, life got so hectic that I completely forgot I started this thread. I'm so sorry, sprtchick. It was truly kind of you to offer your bowmaker to me and I'm glad you were able to help someone else out with it.
I took the bowmaker I bought and beat it against a big tree and broke it to smithereens. Don't ask! I just enjoyed doing that for some reason.
My husband said that I should quit buying stuff if I'm going to just break it up like that. Obviously I don't want to make bows. Maybe it's an allergy to bows or something.

OMG... THANK YOU! You're my new hero! I take a temperature sensitive medication that gets mailed to me in these stupid styrofoam coolers every month and I've been struggling to find something to do with them... AND I was looking for something to help me tie bows. This will be perfect! The most imaginative I've gotten with the coolers is packing material and keeping stuff cold (hubby's beer at his side during the superbowl).

Yes! I saw this on utube and it is awesome! It took me a zillion tries but then I got it, ribbon that bends is essential. I didn't have lucky with grograin.
And then I had a brainstorm, you could use a big comb and get different sizes easily. A hair pick would be perfect.
