Default Printers

For the last few years, I have been helping out friends with wedding and party invitations. I would like to start doing this on a bit bigger scale now that I am a stay-at-home mom with our new baby. I currently have a run of the mill HP inkjet printer that has a hard time handling cardstock over 110 lbs. I also have a problem with drying time and smearing when it comes to printing on smooth paper like shimmer paper or vellum. So, I thought maybe a laser printer was the way to go, but I see they only use paper specific for them. With that in mind, can anyone recommend a good printer that will handle cardstock greater than 110 lb.? The last invites I did used 150 lb. cardstock. Thanks!

I have a Canon MP560 that is good at handling heavier cardstock. It has a rear feed tray so that the paper path doesn't bend the cardstock around the feed rollers. I often feed 203# cardstock through it and haven't had it jam yet.

Any laser printer should work well for you and be able to take heavier cardstock. I never have a problem with our HP laser printer.

I have an Epson WorkForce 645 and have zero problems with heavy cardstock. As a matter of fact, I tested all the usual suspects in it - PTI, Gina K, Taylored Expressions and Neenah. They all print wonderfully without fail. Good luck in your printer quest!!

A laser is really good at printing on most surfaces. Even vellum and I use it far more than my inkjet. I have a small cheap one and it has a setting for heavy paper/card.

The paper path isn't a problem, but I remember the toner not setting properly on an older model, probably because the heat couldn't get into the card enough.

I have an inkjet too because I've heard that for photo printing lasers aren't up to the task of blending quite as well yet. That may have changed since I last looked though.

You can't beat a laser for crisp prints and speed when doing multiple prints which both sound useful for professional looking invitations.
