Question Printer Problem?

I have a new Epson Workforce All-in-One printer/scanner and a MacBook Air. When I scan in a drawing, the periphery of the sketch is the border of the piece of paper. I have not found a way to ungroup the drawing from the paper. Epson advised a way to crop the paper around the drawing before scanning, but they remain grouped together. I can outline the edges of the picture and cut it out and paste it where I want it to go, but I can't duplicate it. I am afraid that I am missing some very basic principle here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, LasSuziq
