Default palette re-inker poured into Copic markers

I saw Lisa Strahl take Ranger Alcohol inks and pour them into the empty Copic markers you can buy....she says it works beautifully.

What about Papertrey's Palette refills? Would these work as well, if you took the refills and poured some into an empty Copic?? Would love to color with some of Nicholes new colors.....

Palette isn't alcohol ink. I'm not sure what it would do.

The marker system shouldn't require alcohol ink specifically; the nice thing about the Copic markers is that they have capillary action, so both ends can use the ink, without it pooling at one end or the other (hence, they can be stored on end as opposed to requiring flat storage). I would think that you could create a "marker" for the Palette inks that match the stamp pads; the properties of the marker would be the same as the stamp pad - e.g. dries quickly.

An empty marker can be filled with any THIN inks. Don't try paints because the particles wouldn't flow through- they would just clog the fibers, dry, and harden. People have filled empty markers with invisible ink, india ink, and much more- not to mention custom alcohol inks.

Genius Denise. I am going to try this.
I have a brochure from Copic I just received today and it tells you how much ink to use when you refill the various types, such as 2 cc for a Ciao.

This is what I have...the Ciaos....so 2cc of a Palette ink should do the trick? I'm going to try it with one empty marker as soon as I get my hands on some. It'd be great to have some of those colors as markers. This is going to be really interesting!

There's a helpful booklet I received from the Copic marker company simply by emailing them. The pages aren't numbered (there's a graphic designer out there somewhere who needs our help!) but one of the pages shows the different nibs available, another show how to refill the markers.

There is a little chart that gives the following quantities for refilling:

Wide 4-5 cc
Copic 3-4 cc
Sketch 2-3 cc
Ciao 2 cc

And it says, "Note: It is better to underfill your marker, rather than risk overfilling. Work over a protected area. Clean spills with rubbing alcohol or alcohol based hand sanitizer."

There is a refill booster pack that looks as though it would be extremely helpful if you're going to use an ink bottle.

Sorry about the page numbers! Here is a PDF of directions as well- it's more complete than what's in the brochure. Note- you can only get empty Sketch, Copic Original, or Wide markers. Ciao don't have empties.

It's confusing, but you can REFILL any of our markers. You can buy replacement or optional tips for any of our markers as well. But if you want a totally dry, empty marker then you're out of luck with Ciao- just go get Sketch empties instead.

I'm so glad you're answering questions. Here is one more for you. Also in the brochure it has a page showing replacement nibs. For the Ciao, could you get a medium round nib to make it easier to color in small places? It seems to show three available nibs for the Ciao, the super brush and medium broad that the marker comes with and then a third option, the medium round. Are those interchangable if you want them to be?

The medium round nib is available for Sketch or Ciao. It is not as fine as the Fine tip on a Copic- it is nice and firm though. It's much better than coloring with the chisel nib. I'd say it's about twice the size as a Copic fine point. This is much easier for writing, but I personally (and I'm not everyone) prefer either the point of the Sketch/Ciao brush or the Copic fine point for coloring in stamps.

I am guessing that the Palette ink will not behave like an alcohol ink in terms of seamless coverage.

The characteristics of these inks are so different, it would be a completely different type of marker requiring different techniques.
