I don't think you were quite thorough enough Julie.

Thanks so much for taking the time to report on all the inks.

I have all but 4 of the hybrid ink colors and I LOVE THEM!! I have spots- I only have one full size- Noir. I also have Brilliance Black and Versacraft Black.
I need to get reinkers as my spots are drying out.

but it's such an awesome, well performing ink. it works on almost anythign with heat setting.

Thanks Julie! You can tell you were a teacher by your great explanations.

I have only had experience with SU, Petal Point, Memories, & StazOn inks. So it helps to get a good description of what the different inks do & don't do. Since I am really getting into learning the prismacolor/gamsol & watercoloring techniques, I think I may need to try the Palette ink too.

I am so glad you are excited about Hybrid Palette inks, like I said before my absolute favorite, use them all the time inks. They are crisp and beautiful. I need to get some spots I think, lol. I have about 6 full sized pads, in the colors I use most.

Please note that Palette Metallics come in gorgeous colors - and come uninked with a refill. So I'm nodding and winking at you that this is noooo accident. These ink pads dry out fast!!!!, and I do not recommend the cubes (less surface area, dries out even faster) unless you get the refills, too.

And the ink in the reinkers is particularly fun to play with... sheer and intense.

I just ordered my first Colorbox Fluid Chalk inks and they should be in today!

And as for the TAC Pallete Inks...I have two sets of the spots and a noir and burnt umber. I uhm....*is bad*....got rid of my SU pads after I used the noir the first time. I know...I'm horrible! I didn't totally get rid of them....I just moved them out of the stamp table to make room for the new pads untill I get them onto the B/S/T forum or something. ;)

That's it! You're outta here.

;)

I will admit that I don't know if I could ever get rid of my SU! inks--they just coordinate too well with the card stock, which I also adore, and I loooove the colors. The thought of not having them close by is rather horrifying for me!

Well I also don't really use any colors other than black and brown...I guess I'm just not a branched out stamper. ;) Besides...my black su pad caused me to get stitches...so it is still on my list. ;)

And Julie, thanks so much for your lesson on inks - much appreciated.

You're welcome! I added a little bit more clarification, but I doubt anybody would wanna re-read that lengthy diatribe more than once! Hah!

When it comes to inks, as Betsy already said, there probably is no "ultimate" ink. And, just about every ink out there has a specific use it was designed for. It's more a matter of finding and using the right ink for the job/project you're working on, and the specific performance or effect you need from it, UKWIM?

Also, inks are very much a "personal" preference. We all end up developing our faves, based on our experiences when working with 'em.

For example, I adore my Brilliance Pearlescent Inks--I think they yield a beautiful look. Would I get rid of them in favor of the Palette Metallic Hybrids? I dunno . . . I'd hafta play with the PMH a bit to see if it was really worth doing so, since I'm already pleased with the Brilliance and have already investsed considerably in those . . . they didn't come out with the Dew Drop version of those until looooong after I'd spent a butt-load on the full-size pads . . . chuckle!

At any rate, I'm glad I've been able to contribute a little helpful info--there are many MORE inks out there on the market beyond the ones I've described! Yikes! ;)

I was closing the basic black in pad and snapped my finger in it....it was a tough one to open and close....and it just sliced my finger right open...

So watch out for those ink pads....they're dangerous suckers. ;)

Wow! Thanks Julie for your very detailed ink lesson!

I have to say that ever since I got my Palette Noir, I haven't used another black pad.....it's awesome! I like that I can even stamp it on the textured cardstock and get a nice, crisp image in a "true" black. I just got one set of spots and plan to get many more. I have mostly SU inks and love that they coordinate with the papers, etc but now I must have the Palettes too!! Besides, now that I'm a demonstrator for TAC I really "need" them to demo, right?? More fuel for my addiction............

I usually store mine upside down. If they pads are too juicy, then I store them right side up for a bit and then switch back to upside down. HTH

Julie--has anyone told you that you can do awesome tiles with Palettes and All Purpose Inks? Works like a charm!!!! If you use Palettes and AP Inks on fabric, you can get fantastic shading and do cool T-shirts and such!!!

Oh, and even though I've not used the metallics, I haven't heard great things. Remember I am a die hard Palette lover (have almost all the colors in full sized pads), but from what I know I can't recommend the metallics.

That's good to know!

Hey! Have you uploaded any samples in the gallery? ;) I'd love to see 'em!

With all the metallics I have in Colorbox Metal-Xtra, Encore, Brilliance, and Decor-It, I think I've got my metallic needs pretty much covered, at least, for the time-being. ;)

But, I hadn't heard anything good or bad, so I'll take your word on that and sit tight for now with regards to the metallics.

Everything sure does sound great on the the standard Palette Hybrid tho. I can't wait until they arrive so I can tinker with 'em!

Thanks to everybody for a great ink discussion!

You asked about my gallery....I just don't have time to upload in two places. I BARELY have time to upload in one place! LOL. In fact, I haven't kept the one gallery I do have very current. :-( It's not here on SCS, though. It's over at A Shade of Blue. Sorry!

I feel your pain on that front, and totally understand--trying to keep up with even one gallery is tiring, not to mention, time-consuming . . .

OK, maybe this is a silly question, but I thought the Hybrid inks were waterproof and could not be used for watercoloring? Is that not true OR are you just using something else to water color. I'd love to use some to make coasters but don't want to have to use a q tip or anything, so if they are really waterproof I guess I can just use a solid image and heat set. Has anyone else done that yet?

Can you tell I'm just looking for a reason to buy these?

When I say they can be used for watercoloring, I mean that if I stamp an image with them, it won't RUN when I watercolor.

I've never tried mixing them with water and coloring- like you do with classic inks.

Using a solid image on tiles with Palettes and heat set? Yes, I've done it! TAC has a lovely vine stamp and I've used it in a shade of red and green at angles on the tile. Ink up, stamp, heat set. Easy but pretty!!! :-) No coloring involved! ;-)

I have used the Palettes for so much. I have stamped on onesies for friends and they say that ink has not faded after several and I mean several washings. I have stamped on cork paper, wood, clothing, Creative Cling, cardboard, dominos, tiles, mirrors, glass and even my carpeting. So when it says permanent, yup you guessed it pretty permanent.

I love the palette inks and own every color at least 5 of the Noir and 2 of the Moulin Rouge and I can go on forever about them. Just my two cents.

Smile Palette- not for some things- marble or wood

Thought I'd toss my 2cents in... but first, THANK YOU JULIE for the final word on the differences in the SU! inks and other inks! It's a question I think I've had for 3 or 4 YEARS!~

Anyway, I bought the Palette Inks from TAC- got a couple of spot sets. I wanted to used them instead of Staz-on on the marble tile coasters I make. But the drag is that the ink was SO juicy it totally overwhelmed/bled on the marble porous surface. The TAC demo said I should heat set it in the oven at 350F (time unknown). I wanted to get away from Staz-on because new pads are too juicy- too much bleeding, I hate having black rubber on my stamps, and the stuff stinks- to say is messy to clean up. But, honestly for this application on marble- I will stay with my staz-on.

Onto my second Palette ink trial- I stamped on wood- I swear that thing took 2 days to dry! and no, I didn't feel comfortable burning down the house by heat setting it in the oven.

As for easy to clean off the rubber- had no issues. Simple washed the stamp off under some water along with a quick rub on a wet paper towel.

Last comment on Palette- didn't like the smell much either. Oh, but my nose is very ~~sensitive~~..

However, now that I've read these posts- I think I will try it on fabric and on paper for my water color projects.

So, I too thought I had found the solution to all my problems... but I won't be buying any more Palette inks right now...

But... I think I've been enticed by Julie's words on the wonders of Colorbox Fluid Chalk Inks and the Brilliance inks... hmmmn wonder when the store opens tomorrow ....ha ha ha ha.... :-D ROFL

Makani--Sounds like your pads are extremely juicy! You can use a heat gun to heat set. Don't just need the oven. Also watch how much you ink up your stamp before you do your tiles if it's an issue. What about letting your pad "air dry" a bit? I've got full size pads and mine aren't a problem--not too dry, not too juicy. I did over re-ink my Noir once so I let it "air dry" for a while. Voila! Problem solved! :-) HTH!

Default thank you!

Thanks for your ideas! I am going to try out your ideas... and the heat gun does sound much more safe :-D

I have never heat set in an oven, and I have been using Palette inks since TAC got them in the catalog, I used to be a demo. Heat set these inks with your heat gun. I had never even heard of heat setting them in the oven.

I heat set mine in the oven for 20-30 min. I usually do large batches at a time so that's much easier. PLUS, I'm sure I don't miss any spots. If I'm coloring in with AP ink, though, I just heat set the Palettes with a heat gun first. Quicker than running up and down and I don't like waiting in between!
