Jo-Anns has Ott lights on sale this week. Do you own an Ott light? Would you recommend it? What kind do you have? I read the reviews on their site and though there are not too many some of them have negative things written about them. I am just looking for help. I would like to buy one that everyone on SCs recommends. Thanks!
My grandmother has a Ott light that she uses for quilting and I've occasionally used it for stamping when I visit and have crafty days with her.
Personally, I have not been impressed by it. I am cheap (and broke) so I use an old desktop lamp (like the kinds you see everywhere for dorm rooms). It's portable and flexible like an Ott light and I feel like the light from my small desktop lamp is more genuine than the Ott.
However, that said, I know TONS of poeple swear by the Ott light!
I bought two Ott lights a few years ago when they were on sale. They are just like the ones on sales right now at Joannes for 79.99. I eventually put one behind my bed for a reading light as I needed something close to me that put out good reading light.
The one in my craft room I really like. I like that I can see the true colors and it is bright enough to really illuminate my work. Another good thing is that I have not yet had to replace either bulb.
I bought one from Joanne's just a few weeks ago and I love it. The lighting is very natural, not yellow like a light bulb. I bought the cheapest one since I wasn't sure if I was going to like it and I'm very happy with it.
The best thing about it is now photos of my cards look good even after dark. Before I could only get a good shot during daylight hours. Now with the OTT light I can take the picture whenever.
I have two OTT lights. Work great, not sure I see what the fuss is all about but I am pleased with mine. I purchased them on sale at Costco for about twenty dollars.

I have 3 OTT lights, all different sizes. They are fabulous and you will love them. If you go to office supply stores, they are often cheaper than at craft supply stores.
I researched the Ott lights, and decided I didn't want to pay the price for a standing model, even on sale.
I found a Daylight Spectrum standing lamp with a gooseneck at Big Lots for $29.00 and it included a couple of extra bulbs free which cost about $6 or $7 each. Similar Ott lamps sell for over $100.
I have been very pleased with it.

I have tabletop craft light that I was able to purchase at Michael's for $30 with a 50% off coupon. I really liked the light for studying - it was white, white, no yellow cast at all. I liked it so much I puchased a large floor lamp when it was on sale at Jo Ann's. I wish I hadn't waited so long to set it up- disappointingly, it seems to shed less light than the table top craft model. I recommend the little one, not the big one. Just my 2 cents.
I have the OTT long light bulbs over my craft tables in my craft room, I put in the 4 foot shop lights (each one uses a single long bulb) under my shelves and and use a 40% off coupon at Jo-Ann's a couple of years ago. Haven't replaced them yet. I like the white light it gives off, no yellow light with these.
I have 2 Ott lights, one a 13W and one a 24W. I do not think the 13 W gives enough light but the 24W is great. It is one that can be either a desk model or a floor lamp. I am using it as a desk lamp. It also has a magnifying glass attached but I have not used that. I thought it would be a good idea for some beading that I do.
I own one OTT Lite - I bought it on sale from Joann for $25 dollars earlier this year. I had a regular desk lamp but the light wasn't as bright and it hurt my eyes, the OTT doesn't hurt my eyes, it's bright enough for me to do my crafts and it sheds the white light which is very, very nice. I like it. I got THIS light - it came with "gems" to decorate it but I just used them on cards. LOL. I bought this one because it didn't take up a lot of space on my desk-top. I would recommend it. I haven't tried any other OTT lites though so I don't know how it would compare.

I think that THIS ONE is the model I got at Michael's with a coupon for $30 that I LOVE. I liked it so much I invested in the floor model when I saw it on sale at Jo Ann's.
And THIS ONE is the floor model I got for $60 at Jo Ann's and am not thrilled with. I wish I hadn't let it sit in the box so long so I could have returned it. The shade is dented and falling apart (glue didn't stick and it is coming undone at the bottom), and even though the bulb is a higher wattage it doesn't seem at bright. Oh well, now I know I open things sooner.
Hi!
This past spring, I got an 18W Ott Table Lamp at Joann's on sale. I must say that it is a fantastic light to craft by. It does have a big base, which takes up some space on my craft desk. Yet, I have a fairly large area, so this didn't bother me. FYI---the replacement bulbs are EXPENSIVE.....yet, I've been told you don't have to replace them (knock on wood) for years and when I do, I will try to use a coupon or get one on sale.
I still feel this was one of my BEST and MOST helpful craft purchases....I don't know how I'd make cards without it now...
I was in JoAnn's today and was looking at the Ott Lights. I have two True Daylight Spectrum lights and want to toss them out the window.. the lighting is awesome.. but the heat they emit is horrible.
Do the Ott lights emit heat from the bulbs? If they don't, I'd be first in line to head to the store and get me some. I dont' mind paying for a quality light. I have one that sits on the desktop and the other stands.

To airbornewife- Well, like I said in my post, I have the Ott 18W Table Lamp. It retails at JoAnn's for $99 and I got it for 1/2 that price on a sale. As far as heat being emitted from the bulb, I have NEVER noticed this happening. I think too, that if it did, I would notice as the light extends out over my crafting area. I love this light! I honestly can't imagine crafting without it now. I would say that on one of the websites where customers can rate the product, the OTT bulb got a lot of poor reviews. I was quite surprised by these. The bulb in my Ott light is "supposed" to last 10,000 hours and I guess many who responded remarked that theirs fell short of this by quite a bit. Unfortunately, these bulbs are very costly. So far, mine has been just fine (knock on wood), but this is the concern I do have about these lights.
BTW, Costco has an Ott desk lamp for somewhere around $25.
Since many people have their work surface against a wall, I recommend thinking about a wall mounted light in addition. I find it really helps to get rid of those strong shadows that desk lights create. Lowes and Home Depot usually carry at least one model.
I've had one for about 1 1/2 years. I love the kind of light you get from it. However, the bulbs are supposed to last 10,000 hours;I did not use mine anywhere near that much and the bulb went out about 6 months ago. I have not been able to replace it because OTT changed the style of the bulb and the new style won't work in my lamp.
I just purchased the Ott 18 watt table lamp at Joanne's and love it. Now I can tell what colors I am using on my cards. I had a floor lamp with two natural sunlight bulbs, but still didn't get a true color. Now I use both lamps and get great lighting when I am crafting.
I have a natural light desk lamp that I purchased from Meijer for about $20.00. It has been a good buy for me, and I am satisfied with this no namebrand "ott-light-Like" option.
I don't know much about the ott light, but I did see that the Hobby Lobby in Springfield, MO had some of them clearanced this weekend, if anyone is interested in finding one.
