I love my Sony Cybershot. It's a few years old and I bought it because it makes a movie too! I have movies of all the hurricanes that came by a few years ago--from my front yard!
The only recommendation I would have for you would be to get the extended warranty where they fix it if it breaks. This is the voice of experience talking: I got sand inside the camera. One grain-o-sand got in there and broke a wheely thing. It was going to cost $125 just to have someone look at it....about l/2 the cost of the camera itself!! That didn't include shipping & handling, parts, fixing it. My DH was able to cannibalize another camera and fix mine and that was about 1 year ago. The camera is about 3 or 4 years old now and still going strong.
I have a Sony Cyber-shot 5.1 mega pixel that is 2-3 years old, and carry it with me everywhere. I love it other than the display window is small and it is hard to tell if you have a crisp clear picture of a closeup....for instance a card to upload. Most of the time, I take several pictures of the same thing to make sure I have at least one good one. It came with a 32mb card, and I bought a 512mb card. I hardly ever use the 32mb card.

I just bought the cybershot 7.2 dsc-h5 and I love EVERYTHING about it...
I owned an Olympus before and this camera out does everthing that
one did....You will love it!
Sony Cybershots are WONDERFUL cameras. I purchased the top of the line one they offered 7 years ago, and it still takes fabulous pictures. My parents just purchased the W80 this weekend, and I'm getting the DSC-T100 before I go to Alaska next month. I spent the weekend shooting with the W80, and the pictures were simply breathtaking. Uploading is fast and simple. Focus and flash are outstanding, and the camera has a LOT of great features that quite frankly should cost a lot more. The W80 is a great, great deal.
It's an amazing site - no one else's reviews come close, in my opinion. The Best Cameras list is great. You'll notice several Sonys on there. He hasn't reviewed all of the new models yet.
I have a Sony Cybershot-got it for Christmas 2005. It takes great outdoor shots, and pretty decent indoor shots if it is fairly close. In fact, I loved it until I tried taking action shots that were indoors, or indoor shots that were farther away. DISASTER! My husband is now using it to document his "construction" projects on the farm (ponds, etc.), and I am happily learning to take pictures with my Canon Rebel XTi!:-D
I have had 2 cybershots (I upgraded to a larger lcd and gave my old one to my sis) and LOVE them! I have upgraded to a Nikon DSLR but I keep my cybershot in my purse. It is waayyy better than the kodaks (2 friends with them and they are always asking for copies of my pics from shared events)
Just remember that if you keep the power-save mode and red eye reduction OFF your camera will be really quick and there is no lag time between pics
