Hi, IdahoLee! My hubby also got me this for Christmas and I wasn't sure about it. On first glance it was PERFECT for me, as it separates into two different styles of cutters (one rotary, one guillotine). My friend has it and loves it, but I wasn't sure. However, Purple Cows was at the Winter CHA Supershow in Anaheim last month and I watched their demo several times....very impressive. With the 'catcher bar', you can trim the tiniest sliver with the guillotine and I like that you CANNOT possibly cut yourself with the guillotine. He literally ran his finger across the blade and not a cut on him. Perfect for my peace of mind with all the grandkids around. I'm looking forward to taking it to crops, since it's so lightweight and can serve two purposes. I still have my ultra heavy duty guillotine (think school supply) that I use at home, because my base white cardstock is 18" long and the Purple Cows can't easily cut that size....but I decided to keep mine. I doubt it will ever by my first 'go to' cutter (my heavy guillotine still has my heart), but I can see enough benefits to make it worthwhile keeping. This IS my friends' fav trimmer, tho.
Now, about the blades. Mine didn't come with a scoring blade, which I can see needing (although I just got a ScorPal, so probably won't use this blade at home, only away at crops)...but I was able to buy the scoring blade at CHA at a reasonable price. The blades are easy to change (with a little practice).
FYI ~ My friend also got the hand held free style cutter from Purple Cows at CHA and says it's super neat. She's using it alot.
HTH,
Kat

I have this paper cutter. I use the guillotine a lot, the rotary cutter, never. I don't like that you have to 'lock' the paper down before using the rotary trimmer. If I'm making a lot of cuts on one piece of paper, this is very annoying and time consuming. So I use the guillotine trimmer for large cuts, or thick cardstock and I have a smaller Tonic paper trimmer that I use for DP or smaller cuts. Works for me.
I bought a Purple Cow at Ritz.com a few months ago, in the neverending search for the perfect cutter. The one I bought had 10 or 11 different blades that you could attach, and they stored inside the cutter. The one I got is just a rotary cutter. I loved the idea of all the different blade attachments. Wanna know where it is now?!! Under my guest bed. I used it twice . . . it never cut a straight line, and it was a pain in the you-know-what because you had to lock the paper in place in order for it to cut. Ugh! Into the paper cutter graveyard it goes!! Hopefully yours works out better for you than mine did.
