Question Neenah Classic Crest - Pros & Cons

I've seen this brandname of cardstock mentioned on several posts and blogs but wanted to hear from people who are using it. What do you think of it?

I'm looking for a good base weight cardstock that can handle layers and embellishments but has a nice finish for CAS or one layer cards. How well does it work with embossing folders and texture plates.

Is it good for watercoloring? Prismas & Gamsol? Blender pens?

Any and all feedback appreciated.

It's wonderful card stock! For a sturdy card base get the 110 one.
It works great with Copics for sure. Prismas ok too. Never tried watercoloring on it... perhaps someone will come here to answer that. HTH!

I get the 80# Neenah purely for Copic coloring, it's definitely not heavy enough to be a base layer, but for Copics, there is none better! I've never tried the 110# but I bet that's great for a card base!

I've found no better paper for copics than #80 Neenah . It allows you to blend colours -but it does not bleed too much. Perfect.

It is not good for gamsol and pencils. For that I would recommend Georgia Pacific -which is not available in Canada, or SU Whisper White. I find SU whisper white is perfect for gamsol and pencils - because it has a slight waxy covering that allows the gamsol to spread the colour.

Thanks ladies.

I got a pack of the 80# because it was such a good deal and the sample felt a lot sturdier than SU's WW. I didn't realize that you could get 110# which is what I'll buy next time. Until then, this will have to do. I made a few cards last night with the 80 and it's not too bad. I just wish places in Canada sold it by the sheet for a reasonable price.

You can get Wausau 110# cardstock at Office Depot in Canada. It is the same as (if not better quality than) the Georgia Pacific paper. You can also get the 80# at Walmart. I use both of these with my copics (although I'm not very good yet). If you have a Coast Paper with a cash & carry near you, they carry the Domtar Cougar papers which are just as nice and just as good quality as Neenah papers. I have both the Neenah (Avalanche white - really bright white) 130# and the Cougar 130# and aside from the extra bright white of the Neena paper, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. The 130# papers don't bleed through to the back and are very sturdy for card bases. I haven't tried water colouring on these papers since I don't do a lot and usually use watercolour paper for that. I haven't tried using waterbased markers on the Cougar paper either. The Cougar paper performs beautifully with pencil crayons and oms.

I found a paper supply company called Xpedx that carries the Neenah. I'm not sure if they sell online, but they do have retail locations across Canada & the US. I paid $31 for 250 sheets of the 80# (including taxes) which works out to $0.13 per sheet. You can't beat that. When this runs out, I'll go for the 110#. I like this weight, but wouldn't mind something heavier to support layers and embellishments.

Can you score the 130# without cracking? Is it heavier than Gina K 120#?

I find scoring #120 or 110 - not sure which it is, very difficult to score, myself. I can't use my scorepal with that weight, and yes it does crack.

One thing that I was taught at a copics class is that copics are supposed to bleed through the paper, because that means it's saturated enough to blend it. If your copics dont' bleed through the back - then you are using a lot of copic ink -and you dry out your copics much faster - or so I was told by a copic certified instructor. That said, it personal preference - but I don't mind at all that my copics bleed through the paper. I was told to colour on top of a doubled up sheet of wax paper beneath my copics so as not to stain my working surface.

I will say I use multiple layers with my 80# cardstock and it is just fine for a base layer, I would think unless you use metal embellishments 80 pound would do fine.

Thanks Deborah! I can score Gina K 120# fine (with scor-pal) but I haven't used other brands yet that are 120# or more. I appreciate the help!

The 130# Cougar scores fine and I haven't had it crack. For colouring with the copics, as long as the coverage is even and there is enough ink to blend with then it really doesn't need to soak through and saturate the paper. I like the 130# because I can still get good even coverage and blending and make a single layer card if I want without it soaking through. I don't know if the 130# Cougar is heavier than the GinaK 120# since I haven't used the GinaK papers. But, it is heavier than the Neenah 110#, so I would imagine that it would be heavier than GinaK papers.

I've got Papertrey #110 lb cardstock -and I find I cannot score it with my scor - pal - it's just too thick. I've yet to try scoring it with the score blade of my cutter - maybe that would work???

For those of you having trouble with cracked card stock, have you tried scoring 2 or 3 times before folding? I've never tried the #120 Neenah with my Scor-pal, but found that with the base weight GKD paper, I have to run my score tool 2 or 3 times to avoid cracking. I learned from Gina that the heavier weight cardstock needs a little extra scoring to stretch the fibers enough. Then fold away from the score, so that the valley of the score becomes the outside of the fold. I used to fold the opposite way and always had cracks.

Default Neenah Classic Crest

I just ordered some Neenah Classic because PTI is too thick for my printer and I'd like to print out a few digi stamps. I will try both and see which works best.

That's where I buy mine too. They also let you buy paper by the pound, so you can try just a few sheets if you want. That's how I get the 110#, I don't really need a whole ream of it. I find the 80# to be just fine for card bases, unless you're used to the sturdier PTI cardstock.

Me too. I use the 80# as a base with mulitple layers and it does great. I started using it for Copics and really like it.

That's interesting to know. I've tried -but for me and my scor - pal - the gina K cardstock is just so thick I cannot keep the scorpal tool in the groove. It's just so thick it won't crease - it tool just will not get into the groove. It's fine with SU paper - so I don't know what to think about that. Glad it works for you , Gale.

I purchase a reem of neenah solar classic #80 from Ellen Hutson's store. Mine has lasted a long time. Not sure what I paid off hand -but it was well worth it to me.

Off the original topic, but I wanted to comment...

You don't want to use a non-porous or coated surface as your scratch paper under your copic coloring... you should use regular scratch paper (copier paper) so that it absorbs any "extra" ink that comes through. If you use wax paper, any extra ink that goes though your original sheet will sit on the wax paper and can then soak back into the original sheet you are coloring on, ruining the image.

Sort of off topic too, but has anyone tried using this paper with digistamps and clear embossing powder? I am looking for a better alternative to Georgia Pacific and I love to heat emboss my digis.

I haven't used it with digistamps, but I did use it for versamark/ink and clear EP. This stuff embossed like a dream. It stood up well under two or three layers of clear powder without warping or wrinkling.

If you're in Canada, try xpedx. They only have a few retail locations in Canada, but you may get a better deal on shipping if you order your Neenah from them.

Here are some paper recommendations by Marianne Walker who is the product specialist for Copic Markers.

http://ilikemarkers.blogspot.com/200...-and-inks.html

I love Marianne! If she doesn't know something about Copic markers, then nobody knows it. I took my Copic Certification class from her in Milwaukee way back when, and she was (and forever will be) AMAZING!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Copic Marker makes it's own No-bleed paper as well.

The only two Non-bleeding papers I have ever come across are the GKD Pure Luxury 120lb. card stock and the Copic Non-bleeding paper. Both work beautifully with Copics. It's fun to have the option of single layer Copic cards.

Interesting!!! I was taught by an excellent copic certified person - she may have mentioned that too - but so far I've had no problems. Perhaps from now on , I'll put a piece of copy paper plus my wax paper below my paper.

Given the weight of the paper and how quickly it arrived here I'd order from Ellen Hutson again! I really love her for personal service, quick service - so I don't mind the shipping cost to Canada . But everyone is diffferent. I bought nearly all of my nesties through Ellen too - and some of my copics. I've been very happy with her service and prices.

Here is link to Marianne Walkers blog on her experience using papers for copics. Marianne is the product specialist for Copics - and I think she's probably the best person out there for information. She works directly for ??? Copics.

from Marianne's link

Cardstock for Stamping
For people who want the BEST results for stamping then coloring with Copic, these are the cardstocks that consistently keep popping up as being good:

Georgia Pacific (a little soft for my taste, but use less ink and it won't feather as much)
PaperTrey Ink (PTI) This is a thick paper. To get an image even looking on the front side takes more ink. Because it is thick paper it might not soak all the way through. This is OK, as long as the frontside looks even.
Gina K 80# Good, clean, very smooth bright paper. Takes less ink to evenly soak compared to heavier stock.
Gina K 120# Like the PTI, this is a thick paper. The marker colors very evenly, but like the PTI, it might not soak all the way through
Neenah Classic Crest 80# this is thinner than PTI or Gina K. Not as smooth as Gina K. 80 # but still very nice (my personal favorite since it's what we print on at work so I can steal it from the printer )
Copic Stamping Illustration Paper this is a new paper released at CHA. It is thin (like 50#) and slightly off-white. Takes very little ink to evenly color, then you layer it with your favorite cardstocks
Prism Simply Smooth this is VERY smooth. color may not evenly go through the back. Color shows up vibrant and smooth but blending is a little different than on other papers (you really have to try it to understand. People either swear by it or swear at it)

So, does this mean that there aren't other good papers? No. You need to test each of your papers and find which one works for you, which one matches your coloring style. Sometimes you have to slow down when coloring so you don't oversoak the paper. On Neenah or the new Copic paper it's easy to put too much marker down and then it feathers out beyond the line. with practice you learn how much or how little marker to use.

Can you use Copics on cheap paper? Yes, if it works for you then go for it. I've done some great work on cheap copier paper (not even color copier paper), I just need to be aware of how much the marker will bleed and feather, then compensate for it.

However, the shortlist of BAD papers includes: Watercolor, SU! (SU! is intended for blending water-based markers so Copics are tricky on this paper), and stampers should not get fine-art Marker paper (it's too thin for your use and you can't fix mistakes).

Opps !! I made a mistake in this !! I meant to say that I can't keep my scor-pal in the groove with my PAPERTREY #110 paper!

I've actually not tried Gina K's pure luxury cardstock yet - so I cannot comment on how it works.

Sorry about that Gina!!!!

I have only once had a piece of #120 Gina K Luxury crack on me, it was because I didn't run my scoring tool several times before attempting to bend the paper. I have learned from watching videos at Stamp TV that when using Gina K #120 Luxury CS that you have to run the tool several times with a firm and steady pressure, then bend as usual..no cracking.
PTI- I have only tried a couple sheets of that brand #110CS and none of it cracked on me either- using the same advice as above.
I also only score the way the paper fibers go- so I never fold against the paper fibers as also recommended- I know that can cause alot of cracking when folding. I pay alot for my CS- so when I find a way that works without wasting paper- I'm Happy!!
