I like having them out and easy to grab. I sorted them into SU colors and have them in 5 jars: bold brights and soft subtles together; earth elements and rich regals together; neutrals; reds, oranges and yellows; and blues, greens and purples. Each jar is decorated and has a label. This has worked great for me. They're out, I see them and I use them.
I keep mine in their orginal tins - it protects them but it means that they are not 'looking' at me - which means I dont use them as much as I should
i have 2 of these pen caddies i got from a stationery store that went out of business, but i needed more desk space so i saw the crayola Telescoping Crayon Tower, bought it. took the crayons out and added to my dd's stash, she has her own caddy. i've had it for about 3 months, and its working out pretty good. i will take a pic when i get home.
I only got the 48 set, but keeping them in the tin also meant I wasn't using them. I got a square, divided pencil cup from Target, black color, and cut the Prismacolor logo with the drawing of the girl from the package brochure and glued it onto one side. I also used a Velcro dot to attach the sharpener to the side of the box so it's always handy. I think I spent about $2.48 for it!
Mine have long since left the tin. I have several decorative flower pots on my table- one holds the prisma pencils, another my watercolor pencils and a third my Copics and gel pens.
I have mine in the tin and am looking for storage ideas too. I can never find the right color in the tin without taking all four trays out.
A friend of mine has a set of 96 she bought that comes in a cardboard 3 layer box -- the box pops up, stands, and displays all the pencils. It's so neat, easy to transport and keeps the pencils visible. If I had to do it over, I would have bought this one instead. (picture below)
Now, I'm on a search for a box like that one or will go with pencil cups divided by color.

DUDE! I so want that box! My 72 are still in the tin, but I get annoyed with it cause the trays take up a lot of room when your coloring cause you have to have all three out to get to all the colors. I've been contemplating taking them out of the tin, but where would I put them. I WANT THAT BOX!
I broke down and stored mine in one of those little clear plastic 3 drawer things. I have colored pencils in one, watercolor pencils in another and brush markers in another. That way I can pull the drawer I want and lay it on my table and pretty much see my colors at a glance.
Right now, I have the set of 120, and pulled out the ones that coordinate with SU. Those that don't are still in the tin organized by color. With the 'SU Prismacolors' I have them sorted by color family and then in Ziploc bags. They all fit in one drawer in a Sterilite container. My stumps and gamsol are in the drawer beneath it. I would like to find some space to put them out in jars though. I do like the fact that right now they don't get dusty though.
I found a very nice leather case at Dick Blicks for Prismas. It holds 120 pencils and is very handy. I also like how it keeps them all together and protects them.
I have separated mine by color and they are kept in round "flower pot" type tins I got at Target's dollar spot last year. I love storing them this way. I can see them, they are easy to access and look nice too!
This is going to sound really over the top organized - or maybe not.. but often the colour on the outside of the pencil is not that to the colour of the actual colour that the * lead * gives off. What I did was
1 Create a a graph listing the colours in colour families - IE
Green
Blue
Red
Pink
Flesh - you get the drift
2 .And then I actually coloured in the graph/ grid I had created so that I could see at a glance what colour Mineral Orange created, or French Grey 50 % etc instead of not being sure. Many colours that * look * to be say green, are either more of a turquoise or bluey - green. So I found it much easer to do things that way.
3.I used the little colour thing that came in the package to keep mine in order. What I mean is I figured basically the Prisma colour people are going to keep them in some sort of colour family order ( somewhat true ) and I actually keep mine in that order in my prisma colour box. That way when I want a colour - I have a graph so I have an idea of do I want for brown - dark brown, chocolate, or sienna brown etc etc without trying a bunch of colours first.
I can find my pencils colours quickly as I keep them in the same order as the graph.
That graph is a huge time saver as I colour a lot. I've created one with my water colour pencils, SU markers on both glossy and non glossy paper , as well as with the my twinkling H20's . My stamping space is a real chaos - but I do save time with my colour systems!!

I have this box and it takes a lot of room when its open and the pencils never seem to stay nice and neat like in the picture. I think I'm going to do take them out of this box and get jars or something similar. If you want the box let me know.
I have the 120 set in a box like the one pictured above. I really like it, because I have it sitting out on a shelf, and when I want to use them, I just move them to my desk. It's really easy to see all of the colors in the box and I arranged them in ROYGBIV order.
I have about 130 and store them in a plastic cylinder with four dividers. I put together the pinks and purples, the blues and greens, the yellows, reds, and oranges, and the grays and browns.

I made a coaster box to hold mine. I don't have a picture of mine, but here is an example I found from the gallery with a link to the tutorial I used. The box is super sturdy, by the way, and I LOVE it!

I know - sounds a little uptight eh?
I like the idea of seeing the actual color on paper, it really does help to visualize it to choose the "right" color. That's what I did with the SU matches. So, we're normal, right? ;)
BTW.........I started storing mine on top of my desk, in clear jars, according to color using good ROY G BIV (I actually remembered that from high school, my science teacher would be so proud!). It works perfect and it looks like I'm serious artist with all my pencils about.
When they were stuck on the shelf in the tin, I never used them.
I have them in the dick blick case. It's spendy but sooo worth it. The little elastic bands hold the pencils in nicely and it fits tons of them cause I have some of the old colors as well. It makes them super portable as well. I put a picture of my full case on my blog awhile back. I have them in rainbow color order cause I like the way it looks.
If anyone wants my Prismacolor empty box 120 count, they can have it for postage. It just takes up too much room on my workspace when I'm using it. Its the one pictured in this thread.
I keep mine in the original 120 tin but sorted by SU color match. It is kind of a hassle to lift out the trays, and they take up a lot of space on my table, so I'm thinking about making a coaster box like a previous poster made. I'm really liking that idea!! Lots of neat ideas here, though!!
I bought the 132 pc. tin last year and have also since abandoned the tin. It had FIVE trays! Talk about cumbersome when you're looking for just the right color! LOL
I use a porcelain kitchen crock - the kind that holds kitchen utensils. I put an inch or two of florist's pebbles (the glass beads that kinda look like dew drops only much bigger) in the bottom to really raise up the pencils so I can see them all. It takes up very little room (maybe six inches in diameter, tops), is cheap (since the crock had been recycled from my kitchen), and gets them out in view so I use them more. To me, my pencils are tools, not jewels... fancy schmancy storage isn't necessary. ;) And I love seeing all the pretty colors all fanned out on my work table. Hope this helps!
Gah, this is going to sound "posh" but I have mine in two Waterford crystal vases. I stamp in my dining room (THE BEST light in the house) so when I bought mine, I looked for something pretty that was close at hand...and the vases were on the sideboard and were the perfect height to put them in. So I'm finally using my expensive matching vases...and I get to look at them every day.
I found a colored pencil zippered organizer that I LOVE! at Hobby Lobby. It holds 120 pencils. It is made just for colored pencils. It also comes in smaller sizes. It is really neat! The pencils are held in by elastic straps

hehe...I love this idea! I have a corner in the kitchen (best light, empty space etc.) I just got this area so I'm trying to make my "L" shaped craft space look like my craft space that belongs in the kitchen...I have no idea if this makes since. I want it to blend a little...anyways LOL! I know it sounds confusing...
I use a gallon freezer bag. (not the kind of suggestion you were looking for, is it?) Have enjoyed this thread, because I really do want something better.
When I had the 120 set (I sold it) I used for a while a bunch of adorable glass jars I got at a thrift shop, then later I hated picking up all the different jars and switched to one tin pail I got at the dollar spot at Target. I like that a bunch.
I just have 24 now (and it's plenty for me) and I keep them in that hearts Valentine tin pail that's in teh Target dollar spot.
I think Gina K is giving away some adorable pails for them on her blog right now.

I bought little tin pails from Target last year around Easter. They were in the dollar spot, and were green, blue, pink and yellow with a ribbon on each. I bought one of each color and I put them in the pails separated by color. I need to somehow distinguish the ones I bought from the SU list, but other than that it has worked well for me. And it's very cute!

I keep mine in a pampered chef tool turnabout. I have 2 on my desk-one holds my prismas (and a few things in the center plus my stumps) and one holds all kinds of other stuff.
