ARGHHH! just broke my 3rd Cutterpede in almost 3 years...the cutting attachment (ruler piece with blade) snapped off at the "hinge" (second one of three to do this). I need a new paper trimmer/cutter...that's easily available (can pick up at Mike's/AC Moore/Hobby Lobby...i fortunately have all three within 15-20 miles of me)...any suggestions??? Making do with holding the piece in place for tonight...but MUST replace tomorrow...i may go crazy otherwise!
will definitely be looking at the dahle! hoping to find something i can pick up tomorrow...but i have to admit...reading the specs on the dahle...maybe i can hold my trimmer arm down for a few days!;-)
Check out the Making Memories Precision Trimmer at this link. It tells all about it and has reviews. You can buy this trimmer at Michaels and use a coupon, too. I've had several trimmers and this is my all time favorite. The best thing is the self-sharpening blade. It does best wirh one sheet of paper at a time, though. If you need to cut multiple sheets at a time it's probably not for you.
I bought a Genesis Paper Trimmer from Bonnies Best Art Tools many many years ago. It isn't going to break. There is no plastic. I replaced the cutting wheel once. It will cut as small as a sliver. you can find it here.
I see these threads all the time, but what I wonder is ... is there a good AFFORDABLE trimmer out there? See, I love to craft.... it's my outlet, etc. BUT, that being said, it's only a hobby, and not one I have as much time for as I once did. I do believe that a paper trimmer is an essential tool, but still, I can't afford, nor justify, spending a lot. I use a small Fiskars, the blue one with the orange blade, and I like it OK for what it is. I do get tired of the fuzzy cuts so I put a scrap under it. If I crafted a lot, NO WAY could I put up with that. BUT, I probably paid $12 at M's with a coupon so really, I'm thrilled with it.
Is there a such thing as an affordable, quality trimmer?

What do you define as affordable? I have the making memories trimmer and L.O.V.E. love it. Although it has a $50 retail price, you can use a coupon to purchase it at Michaels. $25 is pretty reasonable considering you don't have to replace blades.
I adore my Fiskars paper cutter. Never had any problems in all the years I've had it and the blades are readily available. I also have a Marvy Uchida one that has all kinds of decorative blades. The Marvy one I only use when I want the decorative cut, the Fiskars I use every time I craft.

i've had the fiskars...the cricut paper trimmer (which was really a joke...couldn't cut tissue if i tried!)...and 3 cutterpedes...purchased the purple cows 2-in-1 trimmer today...used a 50% off coupon so final total was $35 (before taxes)...to me that was a reasonable and affordable price (without coupon would not have purchased...price point alone would have stopped me). the cutterpede was great at $25 (usually bought with a coupon)...but after shelling out for 3...wasn't willing to invest in another. yes it's a hobby...but at the same time...when i look at something i've made...the clean edges do make a difference in how i feel about my finished product...but i'm also a bit **** retentive so clean edges are a must! so far i like the purple cows trimmer...takes some getting used to...but wow...nice clean cuts! and it doesn't feel flimsy or as if its about to break!
I would say for me, $25-$40 is affordable, very doable if Michael's has a coupon for sure. Just wish my store had more stock! I bought a Memories one once maybe $40 before the coupon and it was junk... never cut smooth, never.
I actually love my Fiskars little blue and orange one, had it for 4-5 years for sure. It does cut fuzzy SOMETIMES, but if I put a scrap piece under it, no more fuzzy cuts. And for as little as I craft, it's worth the effort.
Please keep in mind, I have been going through this phase of really looking at what I have (paper, stamps, ribbon, etc.), and really making a conscious effort to use what I have rather than buy new, so I'm sure my attitude is a lot of that. I think a good cutter is worth its weight in gold if you cut a lot, but see, I don't, so for me, it would be like buying a Benz to go to the store twice a week when I could just as well get a Chevy.
My favorite before I went with a TONIC, was the Carl Cutter. It's similar to the Centipede. You can Google Carl. (Now, frankly...I'm a TONIC snob! LOL)
I was in the same boat as you and finally just had to break down and buy a guillotine (is that how you spell it????) cutter. I have the one from SU, but Tonic is who makes it, so you could go through them. It's just not worth having to keep replacing the small blades over and over. Good luck to you
oh man...i ADORE tonic products...and now...even having purchased the purple cows cutter...i feel i must have the tonic...their tools are fabulous! i can only imagine that their paper trimmer is as good of quality that their scissors, distressing tools, etc are!
If you're looking to buy something quickly and easily available, I recommend the Fiskars Premium paper trimmer, they sell it at all three craft stores (HL, Michael's, Joanns) for about $30. It's a great trimmer, but the blades do go dull rather quickly for frequent use.
If you can wait a bit for one to come in, I recommend the Tonic guillotine trimmer. I purchased mine on sale at Joann's and I love it! No blade replacements and clean, crisp cuts! The only downside to a Tonic is that they're bulky and don't travel very easily. I purchased the Fiskars trimmer to take with me to crops.
I believe Office Depot also sells Carl brand cutters, but I'm not sure on their pricing or availability.
