I just joined and am happy to be here. I just purchased a Martha Stewart Thank You punch and don't seem to be able to punch it in a way that the background (the paper from which the words have been cut) is usable. The area just above the T (of the background) always rips. For those of you using this punch, is this normal? Are you only able to use the cutout words, or have you been successful in punching so that you can use the paper from which the words have been cut as well?
All I can say is that I have had several MS punches that were "duds" for me. The more intricate the design, the more likely it will have problems. If you discover this quickly, you might be able to get a refund or exchange from the place of purchase.
BTW - my "Thanks" punch eventually ended up in the trash.
Thank you Carrie. I got it on ebay from a store, so I'll check with them if it would be considered eligible for return due to failure to work properly.
If you think sharpening the blade would help, try punching through an aluminum can or some doubled-up foil. I usually get good results cutting through a can a couple of times.
Use craft scissors to cut the can open so you have a relatively flat bit of metal to cut, then punch through a few times.
You might need to cut some wax paper afterward to lubricate the blade.

I wish sharpening would work for some of these "dud" punches but it is more of an issue that the two sides of the punch don't pass each other enough in some areas to make a clean cut. Trust me if you get a punch like this you will know because you will squeeze the dickens' out it trying in vain to make it all cut. One snowflake border punch I had could only make poked holes on one side of the punch. It is definitely a manufacturing quality issue.
Sorry that your punch isn't working. I have this punch and have no issues with it. I hope that they will be able to exchange it for you or give you a refund.

That's definitely a problem way beyond sharpening!

I have the same punch and the same problem. It was that way from the get-go and because of that, I will not purchase anymore MS punches. I have never had any problems with my SU punches (and no, I am not a demostrator) so those are the ones I continue to buy.
I JUST bought the MS double punch Thank You stamp. I'm disappointed. The words punch, after you break your hands getting it to punch, but that's it. So, what the h is the double punch? It looks like there should be a circle surrounding the words thank you when you look at the punch. The words punch but that's it. There is no circle surrounding the words when I punch it. Just got it yesterday. I have alot of her punches and have never had a problem with them. I don't get it.
