Default Martha Stewart Scorboard

I just got my MS scorboard, and thought I'd be thrilled because of all the stampers who've raved about this and the Scor-Pal. But what am I doing wrong? When I score my 4 x 5 1/2 CS and then fold on the scored line, I always end up having to trim something off both sides of the card to make them match, and sometimes off all 3 sides so they're even.

I know you probably know your measurements but your post says 4" and
5 1/2". I always cut my card stock ( 8 1/2 x 11) at 5 1/2" and then score at 4 1/4" Just a thought. Good luck.

Cathy, thanks for your response. If you're not having any problem, it must be something I'm doing. Angie, thanks for your input, too. In my original question, I had just typed in the dimensions of my card off the top of my head, and obviously my head isn't screwed on straight! My CS is regular 8 1/2 x 11, so cutting it in half would indeed be be cut at 5 1/2 and then scored at 4 1/4. But after scoring, the 2 halves just don't line up right! Must be me, if nobody else is having trouble! Thanks for answering, ladies.

I use a Fiskars paper trimmer - and if I don't have my paper trimmed absolutely accurate then when I score the card there will be some hang over on the edges. The scoring channels are accurate, the cutting is probably off a bit. There is more room for error in the cutting. There is no room for error in the scoring since the grooves are fixed.

I was going to say the problem could be in the paper cutting. I used a Fiskars Triple Track trimmer for years and was frequently frustrated at not being able to get a perfectly straight cut. All attempts to fold the half sheet into a card base ended up with uneven edges that needed trimmed. I tried scoring first a few times and that was an even BIGGER failure so I gave up the scoring idea.

Finally last fall I made the jump to a better paper cutter. I chose the Tonic guillotine style with the 12" base. About the same time I bought the Martha scoreboard too. I have no trouble with scoring and I do believe it is because I cut all my 8 1/2" x 11" in half with the Tonic. Very straight every time.

Polly, thanks for the tip, and Sewnmachine, I'll bet you hit the nail on the head. It must not be my scorboard that's at fault, but my paper cutter. I'll check out your theory, which sounds completely logical, and try to be more exact in my initial cutting of the 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock. That HAS to be where the mistake is. Thanks a bunch, ladies!

Thanks, Cobby, for your further confirmation! And if I can't get it right with my paper cutter, then I'll know that the Tonic is a good one to check out. Thanks!

Make sure your paper is accurate. Also when folding it the valley score is the outside of the card not the inside.

I had that problem when I first got my Scor Pal until I realized that when you pick up your cardstock, you should fold it away from you, not towards you. Good Luck!

I know it is my paper cutter. I have two, and both cut slightly off. I haven't figured out which one I need yet though. A Genesis would be great, but a bit pricey. I have a CM Guillotine cutter, and I do NOT like the Guillotine cutters at all. So, the Tonic is not for me.

I have been thinking of getting one of these. I already have the Scor-Pal but after seeing a post on the Martha Stewart one with all the measurements I think I just might have to get me one. I am going to Minot at the end of April so I figured that I would wait until then and see if i can find one for less in the US than what I would pay for one here in Canada. As for the issue of the paper not being even after cutting and scoring, I do that alot when I cut wrong. If there is just a slight overhang then I leave in as it is instead of messing around with cutting such a small amount.

Thank you, Cobby, and you others who said it might be my paper cutter. It is! Well, not really the cutter, but ME! I just wasn't being careful enough, lining everything up perfectly so the cut paper would be perfectly square (actually, rectangular!). So I'm more careful now lining things up, and my Scoreboard is making perfect cards! Thanks to you all for all the responses and tips. Stampers are the best!
