I am fairly new to stamping and have been buying a ton of SU stuff. I have and use watercolor pencils with them, but would like to have the markers that you can use directly on the stamp, but don't want to wait to get the SU ones and would really like some cheaper. Know of any???
If you're at all interested in color coordination amongst your paper, inks, pens, etc...then it is definitely worth it to invest in the SU markers. The price is really not much more than other brands of water-based markers that you can use directly on a rubber stamp. The only other brands I can think of are Tombow and Marvy.
I have to echo the sentiments that if you are using SU paper and inks, etc. buy the markers a bit at a time. Well worth the investment. You will buy other colors and then wish you had the SU ones!! Good luck

I also use SU markers but I also have some Tombo and Marvy markers. You can buy them at Michaels or Joannes. THey work very well on stamps. Just remember to huff on the stamp before putting it on your paper.
I have the Marvy markers and find them very good - easy to use and give excellent results when stamping. Can't say how they compare as I don't have any others.
As a beginner I bought them to experiment with as I didn't know if I would use them much and they were cheap. I'm happy to keep using them.

I have all of the SU markers and I like them fine... However , there are many colours they don't have... so I also have both marvy and tombow markers. My favourite are tombow - though Marvy are very nice too. NO regrets over the SU - but if you want a flesh tone, a number of greys or browns - or anything - tombow has a lot more colours. One place you can google is Frantic Stamper. She sells both Marvy Le Plume and Tombow - and she will sell you one at a time if you like - you needn't buy a set or anything. She is great for quick shipping and excellent prices - both shipping and for the product. Google Frantic Stamper( I don't have a link! ) - she is in OR - that way you can try out a few of each - tombow and marvy - and see how you like them compared to SU. JMHO.
I do love the SU markers for the color coordination. I really like the Marvy embossing markers for embossing. I wish the tips were smaller, but I like being able to clear emboss over what I colored. I have also made my own embossing marker with a SU reinker on a Versamark pen. I did it with Cool Caribbean and it worked well and then I could emboss what I colored.
I gave my old markers to the kids and got the SU markers. It was really worth it! My SIL saw mine and just had to have the whole set and bought them, too! I bought mine during Sell-A-Bration so I would gets lots of free goodies with them. It was hard to make myself wait, though!
I am still new to the different techniques of coloring stamps, but I am an avid learner and shopper, and some of my favorite scrapbook stores carry Copic alchohal markers and even offer classes on how to use them. The samples I've seen are beautiful. They are pricey though: about $5-6 a piece, but when I first started I went out and bought every marker I saw and wasted a lot of money. I wish someone would have told me about these. Good luck and have fun!
Tombow markers are definately the caddilac of a waterbased marker. They are very juicy and the tips are very durable. I have some that I have had since I started stamping 10 years ago and they are still just as wonderful as the day I bought them.
