I use 3m Scotch dbl-sided tape. I have been using for over 5 yrs and it never gives out. I've been using my ATG for about 2 years (love it) and so far so good. I use the "red" tape for special treatments (boxes, beads, some glossy papers). I buy the scotch tape at Sams and put in on a desktop tape holder. Refilling is simple and it hasn't failed yet. Sometimies it seems that the "old-fashioned" ways are best.
Just gonna throw my two cents in....I have had the same issue with mono, I am so disenchanted with this product, I think it is so over priced at Michael's, they charge $6.99 cdn for 1 refill that's if they ever have the stuff in stock. Recently I started using Ad Tech, it's a double sided glue runner like mono, it's found in the glue section at Michael's and I have found it in the craft section at Wal Mart. 1 dispenser costs $4.99 and you can buy the refills (2 in a pack) for $4.99 and boy am I impressed with how well this stuff sticks! It sticks so well that if I try to use the dental floss trick to lift off some paper it won't come off!
I just emailed a complaint to Tombo.....I have used their mono adhesive tape runner in the past without problems. I used it a week ago to make 25 invitations, and imagine my surprise today when I got them out to mail, and they ALL fell apart!!! Yikes. Wish I had the original packaging with the lot number. Guess its back to double-stick tape......................
I switched from Mono to Kokuyo Dot n' Roll tape runner, I love it. It loads easy and so far - it sticks and I haven't seen any of my work "fall apart". You don't get that "quick" I made a mistake need to reposition time buffer. Once you put it down and squish it, it's stuck, and will damage your paper when you try to remove it.
I use mono and things seem to hold together well. I'll have to ask some friends who save my cards to see if they ever fall apart. I must say, I use plenty of it - around all four sides of a piece of paper and once or twice down the middle depending on the size of the paper.

I was having problems with Tombow mono, too. Now I use more (not economical, I know, but I bought in bulk for the discount to just under $2 each), and use a clean brayer to run over the back of the card when I'm done. So far, this seems to be helping. Time will tell! I think I see an ATG in the distant future...

Weird, I only use Mono rollers and rarely have problems. If I am afraid a layer is awkward or heavy, I get out a liquid glue and just put a dab in the middle.

I wonder if you use a heat gun for a short brust to moisten the adhesive a little bit before you stick something on, if that would work?
