What's the best product you've found to color flesh-toned areas (like faces and hands)? Are there certain copic markers, prismas, etc? I have bic mark-its, SU! markers, koh-i-noor pencils and SU! pencils, but there's nothing in there that works well for faces (at least that I've tried!). So I want to invest in something that will work well. Suggestions?
I mostly use my blush blossom marker, or the tan one. I like them. If I am chalking, I use that instead. Are you coloring the whole pictures? Or just the faces? I usually only use one type of product on the images.
I used the pink Khoinor mixed with a little orange for pale skin or that luscious brown with some pink for tanned. Tombow has a Flesh and I do use that a lot too.
My Gallery has a card with a scarecrow that is a little pale skin but with yellow added as he is suppose to be made of straw--right? I never get a picture of my cards before I mail them...I always think after it is in the mail--I should have taken a pic of that!

I usually color the whole picture and I do try to use the same products on the entire image. But this past week I was coloring a High Hopes image (Delia Angel) and I just could NOT get her face/hands/arms right! She looks either too pink or too orange.... I'll try the blush blossom! I think it's just me, but every time I use a marker, I have to mark it on scrap paper first to be sure it's gonna come out the color I want - some of SU!'s markers seem either brighter/darker or different than the cap color.

I did try some blending using my koh-i-noors and a blender pen, but the stupid versafine black onyx ink I stamped the image with kept smudging! I'm having to restamp at least 4 of the 14 images. Ugh.
Depends what I'm using but my favourites are generally:
Copic - Skin White (E00)
Tim Holtz Distress ink if I'm watecolouring - Tattered Rose
Lyra Skintone pencil pack - this is an awesome selection for different ethnic skintones and super-useful for all kinds of other stuff too (nature images, bunnies and bears etc).
If my budget would only stretch to one thing and I could afford the Lyras, I'd pick those any time.
I do mix colouring media on projects - it's fun! The only thing to watch out for is the order you do things in. So if you're mixing Prismacolor or Lyra type pencils and Copics, for example, use the Copics first and then add pencil detail on top. If you do it the other way round you'll wreck your Copic nibs as the alcohol in the pen will dissolve the wax base of the pencil and it will clog up the nib.
I use the Lyra skin tone set. I use them the same way I use my Prisma's, but I find that they work better than the Prisma's. I also have the Copic's but most of my face images are smaller and I have a hard time staying within the lines with the Copic's. Faces can be a presonal preference what you might not like someone else loves so you might have to play around until you come up with what works best for you and don't forget to write down what it was. Good luck.
I use either crayola peach or prisma light peach. I personally like the crayola peach better - the prisma seams a little too light and oddly enough the crayola blends better with oms I find.
I did this card with crayola pencil crayons and oms:

I also pick up a little red or dark pink for a little rosy cheek colour.
I've had very good results with a flesh color water color crayon and my aqua painter. Pick up the color on the ap and brush it out on paper towel before applying as to not get the image too wet or too much color. It's easy to add -- harder to remove color.
I know no one meant anything by their question or response. Please don't flame me. My first thought was which color of "flesh" do you mean? I'm white. We all know there are many shades beyond pale whitish Northern European flesh. Anybody ever think of diversity for their cards? I'm not much of a colorer but I guess it's something I should be more aware of when I do.

That's why I like my copics - I can create a variety of flesh tones with the colors I have thanks to Marianne's blog!

Are you going to make me read all of Marianne's blog to find them or can you share some of what you use for Hispanic or African American or Asian skin tones? :-D

You bring up an excellent point - I always pause to think about skin color. I never know what color to do. My personal preference is to color non-human things so that I don't have to worry about skin tone. I like being able to choose purple or green or blue for skin colors.

I was just thinking earlier that green would be a good skin tone for a "get well card"!
Just looked at their chart and guess what? The #850 is called "Flesh". Oh and did I mention that I have found them for as little as $1.99 ea. and as high as $2.49 ea. Good deal.

I've done that! It looks great.
as for other skin tones... I don't generally color other skin tones other than "white" because I AM white, but that's given me food for thought. Especially since I sell many of my cards at a flower shop!

That's one way to bring some diversity to your images!
I like to use a pale (watered down) shade of Winsor & Newton's Burnt Sienna for white skin. I can mix this with a little red (crimson), for ruddy skin, a little brown (burnt umber) for darker skin, a little yellow ochre for Asian. All of these colours came in the Winsor & Newton starter set that I bought for 40% off at Michael's. I actually love colouring people.
Well, now! I really thought my question was such an innocent, easy question! lol! You all have given me some fantastic advice and lots to think about!!! I have several of the brands/colors suggested, so I guess I just need to find time to try some of these out!
