It depends on whether you are talking regular embossing folders or 3D embossing folders. On any machine you will need to determine the best sandwich for each folder. Sorry to have to say that, but that is the way it is.
That said, I have a Platinum 6. I use all brands of embossing folders but the majority of mine are 3D and the majority in brands are Stampin' Up. So here is what I do...
Let's talk 3D to start. I put my platform on the machine, then the Spellbinders tan mat, then the 3D folder with paper inside. I almost always get a perfect impression with this sandwich, and no "crinkles". For some 3D folders (SU corrugated comes to mind) that sandwich is too much. Either I use a thinner rubber mat or I use cardstock shims. For thinner 3D folders (some of the newer SU 3D folders are thinner) I add shims to the first sandwich.
For regular folders, the Spellbinders sandwich works fine. Platform, folder, one cutting plate.
Also, the Spellbinders sandwich given on the platform that uses the embossing plate with 3D folders does not work on my machine with my folders. That embossing plate is great for "embossing" dies but even with the thinnest of folders it is too tight. A regular plate is fine.
Please understand that the reason for the variation is that folders come in ALL thicknesses from 1/8 inch thick to 5/16 inch thick. That is a very wide range of thicknesses.
My best recommendation: As you work to determine your best sandwiches for each folder, never force the feed the folder sandwich in the machine. That will curl your folder up and it won't work very well after that.
Spellbinders is coming out with their Universal Plate System. Here's what they say:
The Universal Plate System is a set of seven plates that work in manual die-cutting machines such as the Platinum™ ®, Platinum 6™ ® and Big Shot™ ® Machines. The new longer size allows versatility when die-cutting and embossing. It will accommodate slimline dies and larger embossing folders. It will also work with most brands of thin metal cutting dies, steel rule dies, 2D and 3D Embossing Folders by layering the plates. It will be the only plate system you will need!
That looks really interesting! At least you would be able to label all those different sizes of 3D folders with which platforms and plates/shims that it takes for each one. Would make life a whole lot easier, for sure.
I'll be watching for it to come out.
