I'm sharpening my 120 prismacolor pencils and am looking at how they came arranged. Can't seem to figure out if there is any specific reason for the placement. How do u arrange them?? By color group? Number?
Thanks for info
I started out organizing them by SU colour family, but gave that up pretty quickly...now they are just by colour. I made a coaster box like this one. Laurakj's tutorial is great. I did omit the holder for the gamsol as my bottle is a different shape.

I just plop mine in a jar so I can see them all at once. Then reach for which one I need. Some gals have multiple jars they separate by color group. Hope that helps!
I have mine in one of the cubbies on my Making Memories tool carousel. I Like being able to see them all out. At first I kept them in the tin they came in, all in the little trays--but found that I needed to have all the trays out to see what colors I wanted, and that just took up too much room! LOL If I didn't have the carousel, though, I'd probably have them in a jar, like was mentioned before.

I bought a pencil case from Dick Blick to hold mine. We move a lot and my toddler loves the art room, so a cup wasn't a good option for me. Plus, I'm a very linear person so I needed the organization. In the case they are lined up by color - I started with yellow and worked my way to yellow-orange, orange, red-orange, red, red-violet, violet, blue-violet, blue, blue-green, green, yellow-green and then my grays, white, metallic, and black are together at the end.
I have all 132 of the Prisma colored pencils and I store them in the inexpensive white gift bags with handles they sell at Joanns or Michaels in the gift wrap section for about $0.79 each. They're cheap, lightweight, very portable, and very space efficient. I used to use jars, but these are much better.
I have the pencils sorted into 3 general color groups (red, pink, orange, yellow; green, blue, purple; black, white, gray, brown) and stored in three of the small bags. I've linked to a picture I uploaded in my gallery. It's a bit blurry, but you get the idea!
I found that leaving mine in the trays they came in didn't work for me. It was too much work to go through them to find what would work. Now they are in a decorative planter I found in the basement. Works much better.
I have a set of 72 from at least 25 years ago and they are in a flip top box where the top becomes a 'stand' for them. They are in absolutely no order at all!!
Here's a dumb question, is the tin box they come in not a good way to store them? I've been stalking ebay for these pencils. I just figured they would stay in the tin they come packaged in.
When I got mine, I ordered them from Dick Blick and ordered the SU colors. I store them in a pencil case that I also got from Dick Blick by SU color family. The pencil case as little elastic loops that hold the pencil and the case zips shut. Pretty cool.

Me too, I find that when they are all together, you can see more possibilities when the colour is next to another colour that you didn't even think would go together ! Some cool combos came about that way
I bought all my pencils in singles and I have several differnt brands. The Lyras are much thicker. I bought a very thin plastic case for my close to 200 pencils (its about as thick as prisma tin). I don't worry about keeping the colors separate.
I have a question - for those of you that store their pencils standing up in cups or holders, where do you store your short pencils - the ones that are too short to see over the rim of the cup. Everytime I consider putting mine in a cup I can't figure out what to do with the nubbins.

Why don't you dedicate one bin for the shorties.....put beans or rice, or even crumpled paper first to take up some space. Then you can put the pencil into the rice about a half-inch and have just the tip remaining so you can see what color it is. (I'm thinking like they do at sephora in the arrangement of tweezers, make-up brushes, etc.)

I store my pencils in recycled Frito-Lay Salsa and dip glass jars. I just peel off the lable and put them in the dish washer and they are as good as new. I have mine in 3 jars one for the blues, greens and purples, one for the reds, pinks, oranges and yellows and one for the neutrals. This has worked great for me and they don't take up tons of room on my desk.

I sort mine by color in the ROYGBP then put brown and grey at the end. I have a picture of the super sweet case Dick Blick has on my blog. It's absolutely awesome for me because I'm a student and it allows me to travel with my pencils quite easily.
Mine are "arranged" by keeping them all in a bucket on my desk.
Colleen
I keep them all in a bucket and often just pick the bucket up and take it to bed with me!! Seriously! I'm a late night TV watcher so I will almost always do my coloring in bed while watching TV. I'm all set up with my bucket of pencils, cup of stumps, small jar of OMS, and laptop next to me with my image on a clip board on my lap. .. (yes, I'm single!)...

Mine are in Ice Mountain water bottles that I cut the top off and removed the label. The bottles are ribbed which give it a slightly sculptural look. (Actually I was eyeing my boss' Kroger water bottle at work on Friday. It has wavy ribs-VERY sculptural-I may have to switch water-LOL)
I have my regular Prismacolor pencils and my water color pencils together in the cups. The watercolor pencils have a clear barrel so it's easy to tell them apart. I sorted by: R, O-Y, G, B, I-V paper stomps and aqua painter, and neutrals, for a total of six bottles. It was kinda flimsy (would fall over as I pulled pencils out) so I have two sets of 3 that I've paper clipped together in a straight row. Works great now. I like the look and I'm recycling.
I just got my 120ct set on Friday and after sharpining them all, I sorted them out according to the color chart that came in the tin (it's on the back page), it took a while to sort them out but for now I need to keep them in the tin because I don't have enough space on my table to put them in jars.
I bought a 4 pack of soda similar to the Starbucks cold bottle holder. Mine was only $2.00 so it wasn't expensive like Starbucks. Took the bottles out. Then I scanned the cover of the little booklet that comes with the pencils. Sized it to fit the sides of cardboard bottle holder on full sheet labels. Cut to fit all around the sides and voila I have a very cute holder for my pencils.
My 132 are in a Pampered Chef type turntable by color group, but I also have a color swatch inventory to refer to when I need a very specific color match.
Years ago I used a pen/pencil type thing with a grid where you put each pencil in a single slot. Nice to look at but a major pain to try to get the pencil back into its own slot. Don't go for that one!
I have ~90 Prismacolour pencil crayons and have them sorted by ROY G BIV plus two extra categories for brown and "other" (which includes golds, silvers, black, white, and colourless blender pencils). They are sorted in two compartmentalised pencil cups I got from Target; one is a Real Simple brand that has six compartments, while the other is some other brand and has four. So, nine of the compartments are for different colour groups of pencil crayons, and the tenth compartment holds my OMS, stumps, and tortillons.

SnazzyStamper - thanks for the great idea - I like the idea of having my pencils easy to reach like my markers, but just couldn't get past the "shorties" problem. I'm going to give it a try - thanks again!
I have the complete set and they go into SU clear boxes that large stamp sets come in by color. I put all my coloring implements together separated by color.
So all me red prisma pencils, copics, water color pencils etc go in one box, everything green in another. I then stack them on a shoe holder that sits on my desk.
I like storing them this way b/c I can easily see and access them. I ordered the straw dispenser from an on-line restaurant retailer; however, I saw some plastic ones at the dollar spot at Target (mine is glass).
(Humm...why can I not post a picture in my message?)

No problem...it just came to me. I may do this too...pencils in one row, copics in another...I don't have enough of either to make it dedicated....

I just kept my 120 prisma 's in the order that is on the little pamphlet that came with the prisma's.. I also have a grid in that same order with the colours coloured onto the grid. I could think of no better order.. so I figured as long as I knew what order my pens were in - and I had both a grid of colour samples and the original pamphlet.. at least I'd be able to find them quickly . I already have 120 or so albrecht durher water colour pencils sorted by colour family - so I'd reached my storage limit that way!

Good idea!! I now have quite a number of copics.. but aren't you supposed to store those sideways?? Or am I doing that for nothing?? I'm not sure on the way one must store copics...
