I need to get a hot knife for a foam board project. (I'm not very good with an X-acto knife.) It's not something I'll use a lot, so I don't want to spend a lot of money.
For those of you who have one, what kind did you get, where did you buy it and what do you like or dislike about it?
I bought the Walnut Hallow hot knife from Michael's with a coupon.
I bought it to trim EZ Mount . EZ Mount gets all over a scissors even the non stick style.
The Hot knife is the greatest thing since sliced bread.!!
I put the bare rubber stamp on the EZ Mount and use the hot knife to trim around it. It goes through the EZ Mount like butter and no sticky mess. I love it!!
Since the blade on the hot knife gets very hot I hold and move the rubber stamp with the "eraser end" of a yellow pencil. I don't hold it with my fingers as Christine does.
Better safe than sorry

It IS that easy.
You have to trim the rubber before you put it on the EZ Mount as the hot knife doesn't cut the rubber. But it is a breeze to trim the EZ Mount with this.

I bought one to use with my EZ Mount, but I still haven't tried it because I am not sure what I can use for a safe cutting surface. I was thinking I should go to the dollar store and pick up a glass cutting board. Any advice?
I purchased a hot wand tool, it was in the foam section at M's the cost was about 22 regular but with coupon it was only $11, it does work very nicely. defeinately want to work in a well ventilated area.

Thanks for this info! I have been looking at the hot knife for weeks now and keep putting it off. If I have a 50% off, I'm heading to Michaels tomorrow!

I don't know if they have glass cutting boards at the Dollar store. I got mine at Walmart. You definitely need a glass cutting board. The hot knife will cut through any other surface.

Used my 50% off coupon at JoAnn's today to get my Walnut Hollow wood burning / hot knife combo set. Even so, it was a little more than I wanted to pay ($29.99 - 50% + tax). All I wanted was the hot knife, not the wood burning tips. Oh well.
I didn't try Michael's because I did not have a current coupon. This one, on the Michael's Website, is the one I bought: Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool

Just FYI- Michael's will usually take AC Moore coupons and also Jo-Ann's coupons.
You are going to have so much fun with the hot knife! I loved using mine when I unmounted my stamps!
I am thinking that Michaels only wanted around $16.99 because I was thinking it would only cost me about $8. But maybe the one you got had more to it. I'm not sure if mine had a lot of attachments, etc...I know it didn't have a storage box.
I bought mine at Michael's. There were 2 to chose from. One of the clerks helped me find it. I told him what I was going to use it for and he suggested I buy the one with the blade only and buy some extra blades. I know mine cost me less than $15.00 with a coupon.
From my sewing days I have a wooden cooling stand for my mini iron. The hot knife fits in it perfectly . For Safety I set the wooden cooling stand on a non-slip jar opener. Then when I need to set the hot knife down I have a place to put it so it doesn't roll off the table and burn me or the floor
I just got back from Michaels. I bought the hotknife only. They had the Walnut Hollow brand, but it included a box and a lot of accessories. All I want is a hot knife, so I got that. It was $16.99 so with my 50% off I got $8.50 off! (And by the way, my coupon was for ACMoore, not Michaels. Michaels has better prices on a lot of things, but ACMoore didn't have this hot knife that I could see)
Kathy, you got a great deal! I had originally planned on Michael's but realized my coupon had expired on the 19th, so I kept on driving through the parking lot to JoAnn's. Thankfully, they are in the same shopping center, which usually makes my craft shopping a little easier.

You are so right! And who knows, maybe I'll learn to do a little wood burning and soldering. I'm already thinking that burned edges on my Scrabble tiles might be a nice touch.
And thanks for the safety tip! I've added that iron holder to my Amazon wishlist. Maybe I can figure out how to rig something similar that will work for me.
