I know that the ATG gets mixed reviews and I'm here to say, "there is hope". I've had mine for about 10 years and been frustrated with it most of the time. My major frustration has been that the tape slips off the little rollers and that the "glue" often bunches up. I'd just gotten to the point that I thought it was me.
I recently threw away yet another role of tape and was back to using the small snail type rollers. I had a coupon for one of the craft stores burning a hole in my pocket, so I purchased a roll of the Scotch pink box tape. WOW! What a difference. No slipping, smooth application, no bunching In the past I'd bought the red box Scotch tape in multi-packs. No more. From here on in, I'll replace with a pink box and a coupon.
So, I'm here to say that perhaps you need to try a new roll of tape.
I wonder what the difference is? I also purchase mine with a coupon and right now I have a red box, purple box and pink box - they all say "general purpose". I haven't used the pink box yet, because it was the most recent purchase. I opened to look, but it looks the same as the others. I'm hoping I have the same experience, because that is my main complaint with the tape sliding off the roller!
Oh my goodness - gonna go do this right now! I think I'll cut it with my Spellbinders circle dies. If the cardboard is too thick, maybe 2 layers of cardstock will work fine. Thank you!!

ETA: 2 layers of cardstock is not thick enough. I used a piece of packing cardboard (from a Paper Studio embossing folder) and cut 2 with that and it really does work! Thanks again!!
I don't think there's any difference (unless you get the Gold, which is acid free.) What does make a difference is the way the rolls are packaged and stored. I bought a box of 12, which were packaged with the rolls standing vertically. This causes the rolls to bow out from the core; sometimes the bow is so slight, you can't tell.
As soon as I opened the box, I laid each roll flat and placed books on top to flatten them completely. I left them for several days and this got rid of the problems.
