I used my Prisma pencils today using alcohol and something I *thought* was similar to Gamasol. I bought it at Walmart in the art department (Daler-Rowney brand Low Odour Thinners for Oil Colour). Neither process seemed to work and the Thinner left the paper oily. Did I grab the wrong thing? Can I buy just the big ol' jug of Mineral Spirits in the paint department? My Michaels doesn't have Gamasol, what else could I pick up at Michael's or JoAnns?
I called Aaron Brothers and asked if they had Gamasol and they said no but they had odorless turpentine. Would that work? I am clueless and this is all new to me. Thanks!
I saw that at Walmart and wondered how it would work. Glad I didn't buy it. I did buy some odorless mineral spirits from the hardware section, but I found that it does have a chemical odor which lasts for a while on the paper. However, it does not leave an oily residue on the paper. So if you can stand the smell, it is less costly than the Gamsol.
I ended up using my 50% off coupon at Michaels yesterday to buy a 8 oz can of the Grumbacher Pre-tested Odorless Thinner. I saw some other brands at Michaels but unfortunately they were sealed so I could not tell if they are truly odorless. Has anyone else come across a truly odorless brand of mineral spirits at the home improvement stores?
Ok, Michaels said they didn't have mineral spirits, but I remember seeing something about Mona Lisa products. I went and found Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner, did I buy the right thing before I open it? Thanks!
I just checked the back of the bottle and it says 100% Mineral Spirits. Hopefully I am on the right track. Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong though? The lines still look stiff and I can't figure out how to soften them up. I have used the little paper sticks and q-tips, circular motions.

I've been using the Mona Lisa 100% Odorless Mineral Spirits since 2003. It does say "paint thinner" on the front of the bottle. That sounds like what you have, and it should suit you perfectly fine.
Remember that Gamsol is NOT a PRODUCT name. It is a BRAND name - just like Band-Aid is a brand name for self-adhesive bandages, and Cheerios is a brand name for cereal shaped like the letter O.
Now... as far as your coloring. Some colors of the pencils tend to leave a harder line; it's just the way those colors are formulated. I've noticed it mostly with blues. Also, you don't want your pencils sharpened to a fine point. A slightly duller pencil will not leave as hard of a line and will be easier to blend.
Hope this helps. Don't give up - you *are* on the right track!

Don't be tempted by the big cans of mineral spirits found in the hardware section or in a home improvement store. They are NOT artist quality and have a higher concentration of the "bad stuff" that you aren't supposed to inhale.

Yeah I finally learned this lesson after my third card with sky. Took tons of blending to hide the lines.

Thanks everyone. What do you do when you have a large space to blend color in? Do you still just draw along the edges and pull it in? In the tutorials I have seen the paper doesn't look like it is getting wet/damp while they are working on it and mine does, even with barely anything on it. Is it getting damp for a short while? I am trying to post a picture of one I did but it says I can't post links to other url's until I have posted 3 times, which I have already done so. Sorry with all the questions.
You are definitely on the right track! I love the Prisma/OMS technique!
For larger areas, one thing I've done is very very lightly color in the area with the lightest shade I want the area colored in. Remember, some colors will be a little more prominent when blended, so go very light. You can always ad more color.
Then I've gone to the outside edges of the area and color my next darkest color just around the edges, but heavy enough that I could blend it out into that area. You have to play with that a bit to see how much you need.
I have a bear card in my gallery that was done this way, and I think I used 3 or 4 different browns on him to get the shading I wanted. He was done using q-tips for the blending, too.
A final thought--most of the people I've talked to prefer the Beckett Expression paper (from Marco Paper), or the Georgia-Pacific 110# cardstock (Walmart) for this technique. So depending what paper you are using, that can make a HUGE difference. You want a paper with an extremely smooth, hard finish--which will make your color glide over the paper easier.
Trial and error--you will find what you like the best! Enjoy the process!

For most larger areas I tend to color over the whole area lightly, then use either a darker color, or a heavier concentration of pencil toward the edges.

btw, I have some Sunshine brand odorless paint thinner. It says it is 100 percent odorless mineral spirits on the back, but wow, what a difference in smell. This stuff has very little smell, as compared to the odorless mineral spirits DH has out in the garage. Made the mistake of refilling with the wrong one..PHEW it stinks! This sunshine brand I think he got at either Walmart or True Value, it is in a can, the label is yellow. Works great with my prismacolor pencils!

Has anyone here used the baby oil gel? I wouldn't dare be around any of
the mineral spirit things even if you can't smell them. I have big allergy
issues with a lot of chemicals. I got the gel but havent tried it yet.

I haven't used the gel baby oil but I use the regular baby oil to do all my Prisma pencil coloring. I love it and it doesn't smell like chemicals. Does anyone know if they make unscented baby oil. I have a customer that can't tolerate smells at all. Just wondered?

I use Daler Rowney all the time. Love it. Same thing as Mona Lisa or other brands.
You can even go to the paint dept at Walmart and buy a JUG of odorless mineral spirits. The brand won't change your coloring.
Did you use blending stumps? Q-tips might be too wet.
And I use the Georgia Pacific cardstock from Walmart.

Do you usse the baby oil full strength? Doesn't it oil the paper? Thank you
Your paper and stumps make ALL the difference in the world. Most of the coloring in my gallery is done with Gamsol and prismas. it is my most fav way to color. As for the sky I usually lightly color all over, blend, then start adding deeper colors where I want them.

I just dip my stump right into the bottle. Once in a while I'll get a slight spot on the backside of my paper. But I layer my cards, so it's no big deal.

I just purchased the odor less mineral spirits and the glass container that has a pump in it from Ginakdesigs.com and was very pleased with everything!!!! The glass pump bottle works wonderful and keeps the odor down and the MESS too.
,
I belong to India and gamsol isnt available easily. Plus ordering online makes it costly.
I am a beginner and all confused up.
Everybody on YouTube seems to recommend mona lisa or gamsol.
Can anybody suggest me some other brand?
How is daler rowney low odour mineral spirit
And how is camlin distilled turpentine.
Please help!
Gamsol IS odorless mineral spirits--so the low-odor mineral spirits would work just the same. Might be a bit of a smell--but certainly you could use it.

I've been using Zest It for several years. It's a little pricey but works great and has a nice citrus smell. I love the little jar with a sponge (nib cleaner pot).
I originally bought my gamsol in a kit from Inky Antics at a card Expo. Last year after looking all over for more I finally located a large bottle(double at least the size of my original) at Michael’s in Mesa. It is as not my usual Mike’s. I used a coupon as it is not cheap but it sure does last. I will have to try to pry top of sponge topper of original bottle and refill.
I did use Mona Lisa for a time. I put a sea sponge in a baby food jar with a little and let the sponge absorb the Oms. Then when I want to use it, I open the jar and touch my stump to the sponge. Jennifer McQuire posted yesterday on colouring and goes into detail using stumps and Gamsol
