I am getting sooooo aggrivated by fraying ribbon. It seems like whenever I trim something to the desired size/shape it stats to fray. It happens with sheer organza ribbons and the grosgrain- those are the two that I use most often. Any recommendations from anyone??? I keep ending up with shrimpy ribbons from having to keep trimming!
Thanks a bunch! kym

I bought a bottle of Fray Check and I like to use it on projects where I don't want my ribbon to fray eventually. You can find it at almost any store that sells sewing notions and it's also available at Wal-Mart in their craft section. If your ribbon is fraying as soon as you cut it, I would suggest a better pair of scissors that you use solely for ribbon. Sometimes dull scissors can fray the ribbon. HTH!
I know we sell it at HL. I was just talking to a customer about it who was in my line one day. She says I should get it so going to get some tomorrow. Hope this stops my ribbon headaches. Glad to hear someone else that likes this stuff.

lol I don't wear nail polish...so when I am being really ocd I've been using a lighter and lightly burning the edges of the ribbons...and my fingers. Def need the fray stuff.

Using really sharp scissors makes a big difference. Something else I do is hold the ends with my craft tweezers and quickly pass my heat gun by the ribbon edges. This melts them slightly and keeps them from fraying. Be careful though, if you hold the heat gun there too long the ribbon will melt drastically or if it is organdy it will start to curl.
and i try to make sure there is enough to trim AFTER i am done making the knot just in case.
good luck!
That is what I do, as well. Trimming my ribbon is always my last step. My sister has dedicated ribbon scissors that she keeps very sharp. She has a piece of ribbon tied to the handle so she doesn't mistakenly use them on paper.

very clever!!!
that is well worth the cost of a second pair of scissors! have to add that to my list
I had an old (but in great condition) pair of sewing scissors... you know the kind you buy and then threaten everyone else "only use these on fabric!!"
When I saw the new larger scissors from SU I thought to bring out my old scissors, since I don't sew any more. I only use them for ribbon and it's just perfect. So I think in addition to having sharp scissors, you need a larger size.
