I like this...wait til I finish the hot air balloons....so far they are stunning! Sorry for poor pics but these cards although gorgeous are difficult to take pics of.
Thanks, I like yours better! I can't wait to see the your hot air balloons. I know the foil really shines and blocks out part of the pics, yet flat if some light isn't reflecting. The foiling is spectacular! I'm so happy Gale started this thread. Thanks Gail!
I do have a bunch of DECO foil in different colors but chicken to try LOL. I have seen some YouTube videos on how-tos. I guess I will give it a try sometime today! :-) I really hope this will work because I do a lot of photoshop work. I am on a serious deep spending freeze per my husband's request so I REALLY hope stuff will work with what I have on hand. ;-)
Start with something really simple. A small image, a sentiment, or something like that. I have been toying with other ways to use the foil because I don't have a laminator or a laser printer. I'm sure I could probably print something off at a friends, but I'm still laminator-less. I'd have to try an iron.
No solution from me - just a comment that I find it so funny that heat-set foiling is back. This was something that was popular years and years ago, before I started stamping so it has to be at least 20 years. We would do gold lettering on invitations using our office laser printer. I guess at some point everything comes back around. : )
"What's Old Is New Again" as I've always said. I've been rubberstamping and creating for 32 yrs now, and "what goes around comes around"... lol I still have some foil that Hero Arts sold in square folded up sheets and still have my Hot Foil Pen"... anyone remember those...lol
arubberstamper:p
Will YourStory laminator work??? I have one. I also have an old Brothers laser printer. Please say it will! LOL
Your Brother laser will work just fine. I have an old "Your Story", but haven't tried foiling with it. I'll dig it out and post results for you within the next couple of hours.
Yup, YourStory doesn't get hot enough. :-( so I am going to use old fashioned iron instead. My husband found steel sheet to bypass the softness of ironing table matting. I am thinking I would slip an old pillow case over the steel plate hmmm...
I am on my second Royal S laminator. Has anyone else had a problem with it never getting to the temp where the green light comes on? I am going to return this one and order the Minc by Heidi Swapp. On the bright side....look what I got today!

Thanks Anne...it doesnt hurt that I can order wholesale. This foil I received today was only $2.38 per package of 5 sheets. I will try to find a link to post in the event someone else wants some.
You can emboss a stamped image with regular embossing powder and run it through the laminating machine without a carrier sheet to foil stamped images (or use a carrier sheet for a different look).
Jennifer uses the Royal Sovereign in this video, but she says that she is going to review the Minc in a future video.

I wonder how this should work with an iron? I'm sure you'd have to put some kind of paper over it so the foil doesn't stick to your iron. Any ideas? I wonder how the laminators at Walmart would work?
I wonder if the Minc gets hotter than a regular laminator. I also wonder how it would to sort of touch up with an iron after putting it through the laminator.
I didn't think about letting the laminator heat up 20 minutes, like Jennifer suggested in her video, when I was getting black spots with my Royal Sovereign. Have you tried that Gale? I, like Amber, ended up getting the Minc. It does work perfectly, I'm thinking it may be the extra rollers in it and not the heat factor. It would be great if you could get yours to work.
I did a side by side comparison with the RS and Minc. Same laser print pattern, paper and foil. Black spots on the RS none on the Minc. I even sent the RS through on all 4 sides, Minc just 1X
Did anyone figure out the iron method?? I'm wondering if a teflon sheet would work between the foil and iron....ALSO---if wanting to just foil a starburst and then stamp other images-what would go first?? regular stamping -then foil? (duh-just watched video- they iron on back of cardstock-so foil-cardstock on top-then iron-may have to try!!!

Reason: found answer to one question!

The iron is easy (no steam) but the laminator is easier, IMHO.
The MINC is GINORMOUS and has a lot of gold and white on it. It has some cool additional features, but I can't see that thing in my craft room It's nearly as big as my Brother Scan 'n Cut. And very white & gold.
I just tried a technique that Jennifer McGuire has on her site where you clear or white emboss and run through a laminator. I found it to work better with fine lines rather than a thick image. Was happy with my first try. I tried my with my Heidie Swap iron and it worked but my lines seemed to get thicker.

I tried foils for the first time this weekend. I don't have a laminator or laser printer, but I do have the Ranger "sticky" embossing powder, and that method worked the best/easiest for me:
I also tried with a die cut and the Stick It adhesive, and that was so hard to work with I don't think I'll do that again. And I tried with a stencil and the sticky powder but I didn't get enough glue coverage.
I am hoping to get a laminator for my birthday and I'll try the embossing powder/laminator method.

I do think the rollers have more to do with it. I read somewhere a setting of 3 is 160 degrees on the Minc. I've found 3 works beautifully with all the cardstock I've tried so far. I wouldn't risk sending foil through without a carrier with the Minc. I'm so happy with my Minc. Lydia make room for it!
Here's my latest card with foiled balloon and sentiment.
I tried Jennifer McGuire's technique for foiling embossed images and didn't really like the results I got using my laminator (same as the one used in her video). I've since ordered the Minc hoping to eliminate some of the patchiness I've been getting in general (and thanks to the good reviews here ), then found this video last night where Taheerah applies toner powder to a stamped image for foiling:
Well, I just 'broke down' LOL and bought the Minc. I cannot get the 100% coverage that Jennifer McGuire gets using my Royal Sovereign. I have purchased coated matte paper and tried 2 different brands of foil and I still get a few areas of black where the foil does not adhere and, although the black areas are small, I want 100% coverage with my foil. ::sigh::

wasn't great...it's messy! I tried Jennifer's embossing powder idea and it didn't work for me. The Minc kind of smashed the embossing flat (making the image to wide)
Oooh...........cool techniques and Heidi Swapp is selling sheets of toner paper that you can punch or use with dies or with electronic cutters.....oh my..............

Did you get your Minc? Mine gives 100% coverage every single time, I'm so happy with mine. I use a Canon cheap black print laser, don't know the model number off the top of my head. I have a color Brothers laser, but it's much cheaper to use a one toner printer for this in the long run. I'm anxious to know if your Minc is performing better for you.
